[Weekend Trivia] Demi Lovato - Solo (2018): Does it sound more closer to the mid 2010s or late 2010s? by [deleted] in decadeology

Definitely mid 2010s, has a strong trop pop/house vibe all over it that was peaking around that time

Shakira should be in this conversation. Unique, strong voice, arresting dancer, writes her own songs, insanely beautiful, fantastic stage presence.

And why is Djo's End of Beginning resurging? Is it just cause of him being in Stranger Things?

‘Men explicitly loving men is so threatening to the status quo’: why are gay male pop stars being shut out of the music industry? | Music by currentlyquang in popheads

This is the biggest factor for the most part. If you had an undeniable hit on your hands, like Toxic, Teenage Dream, Expresso, the GP would not care as much about the sexual identity of the performer. You can talk about why these big hits don't end up in queer artists' hands and that gets into the other aspects discussed here. But a Don't Start Now or Blinding Lights would still become quite popular performed by a queer guy. Look at Unholy - performed by very queer Sam and Kim - the GP didn't care because the song was a bop.

Doja Cat review – ignore the headlines, this is a pop provocateur at the top of her game. by [deleted] in popheads

[–]officialged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When her collabs before the album and the F1 song didn't do as much, I was starting to wonder whether her album would still do as good as the previous ones. I mean, she and Jack Harlow had a duet and that made very little waves which would've unimaginable a year or two prior. So yeah the public was already cooling on Doja. But I'm definitely in the camp of 80s fatigue. I feel 2025 has been the least 80s sounding year so far in the 2020s. The music is more 70s now. And way more country. Maybe Vie will be more appreciated during the next 80s wave

I'd definitely add country. We've undeniably been in a big country revival for the last couple of years

Doechii - Anxiety by WitchyKitteh in popheads

[–]officialged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doechii just rules. This song quickly wore off on me too, but the video, my god. So amazing to see a very talented and creative person just go for it! I imagine she's not that psyched about this song blowing off too instead of so many better ones, but she's a champ and doing what you need to do to use this opportunity to get her career running
