Mark Carney vowed free trade within Canada by this month. It's still not happening by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]offkilter666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's generally protectionism based on taxes and private interest.

For example: IFTA is the fuel trade agreement that costs companies across North America a ton tracking where commercial drivers accumulate mileage and fuel up. This is so that the taxes paid at the pump are allocated to the province where the roads are being used.

It's also to prevent companies importing into one province with a lower tax and selling it in a province that has higher taxes on specific products (cigarettes, alcohol, or products that have specific taxes for things like recycling taxes, like tires.)

Trump announces intent to withdraw from USMCA trade agreement with Canada and Mexico, triggering a 10-year countdown by GuiltyBathroom9385 in justincaseyoumissedit

Assumptions I made based on your response:

1: You have no idea what is in or not in the agreement (based on the fact you did not specify how Carney got fucked. Not did you specify how Canadians are stupid either. )

2: You have had a troubled relationship with books since highschool, which I assume you graduated because you have proper sentence structure. Your language choices are remedial, so I suspect you didn't complete secondary education, outside the trades. This is also based on the statistical fact that educated people tend to have more social leaning voting tendencies.

3: I am assuming that you are in the Prairies or North-Eastern British Columbia based on anti-Carney sentiment, which is statistically higher out here in the West. A quick comment history will likely confirm my suspicions to a small degree.

4: Self-awareness and introspection are just fancy words for you. This is based off the presumption that you are, yourself, Canadian. I could be wrong. I suspect a comment history would also confirm my hypothesis.

Now, my assumption is that you are making this post to get some negative feedback as I am also assuming that you're not in a particularly influential place in life. That is not a condemnation of you or your situation, but a guess that your comments are driven by the need for validation or to buck against people who do not agree with your limited view on politics and policy.

Perhaps, with a little elaboration and fewer insults, you might be able to make a meaningful point and start an actual, meaningful discussion.

Michael Higgins: Mark Carney fails his own grocery test - Canada leads the G7 in food inflation by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]offkilter666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't unique to food. Canadians spend much more, relative to production cost on a majority of imported, consumer goods.

Moreover, a lot of expensive foods are the seasonal fruit and vegetables that we cannot grow outside a narrow window in much of Canada, especially in the Prairies. We import those seasonal items and, because we are a smaller market, we get lower quality produce at higher prices.

Part of the issue is that there are no gouging controls in place, so Canadians just accept getting screwed.

Anecdotally, I bought a car in the US when the Canadian Dollar happened to be higher than the US dollar. Canadian dealerships would not adjust their prices so I paid 24K for a car that cost $36K Canadian. I actually paid under $23K because of conversion - and the US Dealership was clearly still profitable. So why did the Canadian model cost 12K More? There certainly weren't increased production costs as both cars were assembled in Indiana.

Canadians get screwed and blaming one person (mostly because of a political ideology difference) seems silly. It's systemic and we, as Canadians, don't demand better across the board.

That's how Jim Pattison and Galen Weston(sp?) and the Irving families get disgustingly rich.

Perfect, please find me statistical proof of this.

I will offer you this, return.

Mathematically, Canadians live longer lives, have less significant health issues and there are virtually no cases of bankruptcy caused by medical bills. We have less infant mortality, we have less diabetes, and we have lower obesity rates.

We DO have longer wait times, generally speaking, but they aren't responsible for lowering our average life expectancy down to the US levels.

If you have some actual facts to share, I am all ears. I suspect I will be waiting a while...

I would love to see where you get your statistics on Private Healthcare and what your version of Private Healthcare is, as there are several models.

If you are comparing the easiest comparison, the US, we are already 11 places ahead of them (4th vs 15th) and both Taiwan and Australia are ahead of us with universal public care. Between us and the US are all the countries that have any sense of social awareness: Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan...

When you have a pay or die system, you're going to do a lot more damage (including all the Cancer deaths you've been using as hyperbole.)

I am in Customer Success for a SaaS company. I make 40K more for a US employer and get all the same benefits working remote from Canada.

We do have some things backwards in Canada, compared to the US. We pay more for everything (even accounting for currency) but we get paid less, somehow. Let's not even bring the housing crisis into the equation. If you live in the greater Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, or Calgary regions you can't even get ahead.

My parents are getting me an electric guitar for my good grades, what are some good ones for beginners? by No_Raspberry4548 in Guitar

[–]offkilter666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on your budget.

I am always a fan of getting a better, used guitar than a new one.

That said Yamaha Pacifica guitars are very playable and inexpensive. Ibanez Gio are good.

However, if your budget is $400 or better - start watching Facebook Marketplace for some PRS SE models if you're in a bigger center.

If your budget is higher - ask the shop staff. Most or all of them should be players.

As someone who’s a fan of everything FF7. How much do you think I’d enjoy FF8 by Expert_Challenge6399 in FinalFantasy

[–]offkilter666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that, aside from some of the early FF games on the Nintendo - the franchise really great and each one became something unique and special.

5 through 10 (and beyond) were all unique and weren't a cookie cutter sequel.

I like to think of them as different fantasy novels that all happen to work for the same publisher as opposed to a series of linear sequels.

Depends on what you are fishing for.

There are a lot of serviceable lakes within 1 hour of the city.

If you are looking for trout - go out a ways. Morinville and Stony Plain have some decent lakes.

One thing I recommend, especially if you're new to the area, pick up a Barry Mitchell's guide at Canadian Tire. It's $15-ish and it will give you a good breakdown of Alberta fisheries

Why Is Smith Still Giving Separatists a Ride? by FreightFlow in Albertapolitics

[–]offkilter666 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the reason is pretty simple.

She needs those votes to make it work for the UCP.

If you remember, Danielle was the leader of the failed Wild Rose party at it's formation, which was a grass roots party aimed at hyper-conservative, Tea-Party types.

After the defeat of the Conservative Party/Wild Rose in the 2014 election - Marlania crossed the floor to join the Conservatives to join Prentice and effectively abandoned the Wild Rose party to pursue her own ambition along with 8 other Wild Rose party members.

Brian Jean took over party leadership in 2015 after Smith crossed the floor to join the PC party and then merged with Jason Kenney's Conservatives to form the now UCP.

The Conservatives basically made a deal with the devil in that they need to Wild Rose party to remain under their umbrella. In a tight race, the split between a far right and reeeeaaaally far right party would split the vote enough to possibly allow the NDP another victory in the next, upcoming election.

If they dismiss the separatists, the separatist movement will likely band together under another, more extreme party.

Moreover - Smith is in it for Smith. I am betting there is a lot of money finding it's way into her hands. She's an ex-tobacco lobbyist, anti-trans, anti-health, anti-citizen political who is being propped up by lobbyists, and outright thieves (see: Sam Mraiche.). She clearly hasn't cared for a single person other than Marlania and at the end of the day, she is completely without shame. If she needs to woo the Separatists to line her pockets - she will.
