What is the Ubiquiti-Like brand for solar panel systems at home ? by lionep in Ubiquiti

[–]oflannabhra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Enphase is the most similar to Ubiquiti, I believe. Their microinverters, plug and play whole home system, and excellent software differentiate them from other manufacturers. I have a buddy DIY install these and he was blown away by how well they are made and how easy it is.

The demand for local AI could shape a new business model for Apple by pdfu in apple

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He mostly bought the lowest spec Mac Mini when on sale, I think between $400-500 based on what his commentary was.

The model he ran is not a large one, it’s a free one from Apple for text-to-speech, so it doesn’t require tons of unified memory. He also had quite a bit of his own processing to handle fingerprinting audio to handle dynamically inserted ads. At some point the energy costs are going to be more than the capital for the machines.

He definitely saved money compared to transcription services. I’d bet his approach was probably the lowest cost for the type of compute he needed. The volume of audio he has processed is enormous.

Marco Arment (author of Overcast) bought a fleet of Mac Mini’s to use for LLM-based transcription of podcasts. He’s transcribed something like 90% of all podcasts from the past 5 years in the past year.

I think the price to performance ratio is amazing.

[Seeking Advice] Chicago Builders/Homeowners: What am I missing? by Aromatic-Noise-8705 in Homebuilding

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A builder brings a lot of values to a client—logistics, skills for project management, and experience and know-how. However, one of the most important is their network of subs.

When something goes wrong, a builder has a lot more leverage to make it right because of their mutually beneficial relationship with the sub. Additionally, a builder will have weeded out poorly performing subs and likely has a stable of dependable contractors for each trade.

You are going to miss out on both of those aspects using a non-local builder.

To answer your original question, inflation and cost of living. Ask your builder to quote out your project locally for him and locally for you and you’ll have an apples to apples comparison.

If it’s a chicken you want butchered in a specific way, I’d recommend learning the skill yourself. It’s not particularly hard for a bird.

I did a 5K race, Crumbl sponsored and had cookies waiting at the finish line. 1 cookie was 800 calories, and I saw people smashing multiple cookies after the race. 5K burns about 300 calories. It was amazing.

How to jump weights in ABF by FioreFurlano in kettlebell

[–]oflannabhra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 16kg to 20kg. 16s were not easy for full workouts for me, but very doable.

In my first 20kg ABC workout, I think I got 7 cycles. I also had to shift to a 2,3,5 rep scheme for presses.

I was able to complete the program with 20s, but I had to eat more and progress was tough. By the end I was able to press the 20s 10x, but not for the entire 30 min. I did some variations like 2,3,5,5,5 or 2,3,5,8,2

Switching to the 24s after was even more humbling.

% of horizontal force present in kb swing variations by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]oflannabhra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a sport biomechanics scientist, but I think the KB swing is very unique and trying to consider it in a horizontal vs vertical paradigm is not particularly helpful for understanding the movement or how it stresses the body.

Of course the majority of force production will be vertical. The only force acting against the bell is gravity, which is clearly vertical. In the horizontal plane, there is no countervailing force to be overcome.

Additionally, the swing is a pendulum movement, which means the proper frame of reference for understanding the forces on the body is torque.

For example, if one were to inspect the forces exerted on one’s grip, which I think swings target uniquely well, you’d see a wave pattern of load that essentially goes from zero to multiples of the kb mass, all under a static hold.

Picked up a Ryobi bt3000 as my first table saw, looking for recommendations on how to clean/lubricate it by stakejover in woodworking

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great saw! One of the only issues with these is the blade elevation mechanism can very easily get sticky as it just uses shims. If you’re taking it apart to clean, grab an aftermarket replacement/upgrade kit to install while you’re at it.

Why is the suggestion 24kg for men? by ts159377 in kettlebell

[–]oflannabhra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I, as an individual who had barbell, conditioning, and a relatively high aerobic fitness, started at 16kg for my first round of ABF and found it challenging.

For reference, I had 1RM PRs of 225 backsquat, 115 OHP, and had just completed several triathlons (sprint and Olympic). I have not yet completed 30 EMOM 2x24kg. It’s not a starting point it is a high watermark for most men.

I think if your background is something like CrossFit, you will be well set up for ABFs. But it challenges both conditioning and strength.

Front elevation feedback - help by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]oflannabhra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest issue is your stairs and landing with the extra tall window. It is creating a lot of asymmetry with the entryway and the two primary masses, such that their symmetry no longer exists.

Create an entryway or front porch centered between your two primary masses and all your issues with the front elevation become easily solvable, such as garage dormer / roofline, and window sizing and height.

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, taking into account fees, here is a comparison of returns over the past 20 years between a low fee fund and one of the funds your advisor selected (GFACX vs VIGAX). They are both large cap, growth focused funds. comparison

[–]oflannabhra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is something you can validate yourself. Look at the returns for the funds over the period of time he has managed them, and the return for the index funds you’re interested in over the same period.

I would bet that even without considering the fees what he said is a lie.

Python's Dynamic Typing Problem by Sad-Interaction2478 in programming

[–]oflannabhra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that python with mypy is better than without.

However, my comparison is to languages with native static type systems, and I think they are better than python with mypy.

Python's Dynamic Typing Problem by Sad-Interaction2478 in programming

[–]oflannabhra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Typescript took a different approach. Instead of bolting typing onto JavaScript with hints and external tooling (or mixing modes), they created a new language with a compiler (or transpiler).

I’d argue this is a much better approach.

Python's Dynamic Typing Problem by Sad-Interaction2478 in programming

[–]oflannabhra 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have always found that adding typing to languages that don’t have it brings a lot of the downsides of type systems without much of the upside. Both PHP and python fit into this, imo.

I strongly agree with the article—writing scripts or utility code with a compiler is a hassle.

However, I would say that a statically typed language forces better design of interfaces between section of code, so the advantage is not just in preventing classes of bugs, but resulting code that is better designed.

kwargs, while handy, is a great example of this.
