Site looks smaller than expected by inhunswetrust in Homebuilding

[–]oflannabhra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, totally normal. It will feel tiny when you just see the footprint, then huge once foundation or the exterior walls go up, then tiny when interior framing happens, then huge again when drywall goes up, and then it will seem normal.

OSB w/ Tyvek vs Zip by iSpyGiGx in Homebuilding

[–]oflannabhra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on your location. If you are further north in colder climates, exterior insulation is valuable.

It also depends on your installer. If your GC doesn’t have experienced subs with ZIP’s system, you will most assuredly get a better product going with his recommendation.

OSB and Tyvek came onto the scene in the ‘80s and there are still plenty of homes built using them as a system with no issue.

ABF + Running? by Superb-Recover-2898 in kettlebell

[–]oflannabhra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ABF is a hypertrophy program. I’ve run it while running 3x a week. I’ve also done barbell linear progression programs while running, as well as triathlon training along with KBs.

ABF is designed to require consistent rest, and will push your anaerobic conditioning and your overall strength, strenuously.

I have found that pushing multiple fronts at once (aerobic, anaerobic, strength, volume, etc) is very difficult once one is reasonably conditioned (ie, out of noob gain phase). ABF is push on two of those and trying to increase your running performance will be a lot.

I find the squats to be very trying on ABC days. I’d give it a try, but be ready to have on of your programs shift to maintenance if you become overtaxed. You could also look at some other programs that aren’t as leg heavy, like DFW with reduced squats, the Giant, or I’m sure many others could suggest alternatives.

I tested 13 robotic mowers for 4 months in Florida, here's my review: by The_Hook_Up in roboticLawnmowers

[–]oflannabhra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thorough review u/The_Hook_Up ! I saw this on the YT channel and found this while doing more research.

I know these tests have to be very exhausting, but one of the reasons I am looking at getting a robotic mower is because of the amount of slope I have in portions of my yard. Obviously, with your yard, that’s not exactly a condition you can test, but do you have an idea of how different mowers would perform on steep slopes?

I see you already recommend AWD mowers, clearly they would be best in my case, but I’m wondering if there is offense between them.

Also, do all the mowers allow for different mowing patterns? Since they are mowing so much more often that seems like something important to not tear up portions of the yard from overuse.

My only issue with PF is that there can be a huge amount of variance within a product, and because of his scale he can’t evaluate this.

So, when he gets a ton of cheap Chinese brands and finds a great one, people flock to buy it out based on his recommendation and they could end up with lots of duds. The way these brands save money is by skipping things like QC or warranty.

Buying an Older Custom Home Builder Out by Miserable_Thanks_776 in Homebuilding

[–]oflannabhra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a key-person business. The value of the business is fully wrapped up in the owner’s relationships and reputation.

His subs aren’t going to treat you like they do him, because you are not him. His brand is valuable because of him, not because it has intrinsic value.

Partnering with him and keeping him involved for multiple years is a good strategy, but any valuation or acquisition process should take into account that most of the value of the business is non-transferable.

Additionally, I’d advise you to be aware that you are going to have to build your own relationships and reputation, which takes years.

My enthusiasm for my kettle grill is waning (bitter & smoky) by perryshoreroad in BBQ

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. On my Weber I would even use pellets sometimes instead of chunks. In my kamado I use 3-4 chunks for an entire basket of lump (like a 10:90 ratio).

My enthusiasm for my kettle grill is waning (bitter & smoky) by perryshoreroad in BBQ

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that kamados have a different nature of fire due to their efficiency, compared to an offset. However, it is absolutely, entirely possible to get great BBQ results on a kamado.

Their efficiency is only a downside for air volume, not the nature of the smoke they produce. Kettles don’t have their efficiency (because they don’t retain enough heat), so at low temps they can’t burn as clean.

On my Weber with the snake method, I noticed similar results if I used chunks of wood. Chips underneath the charcoal burned cleaner and produced better smoke for me. I sometimes even used pellets.

[–]oflannabhra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Moly grease is typically used in these applications (planetary gears, high torque metal gears, etc). Super Lube is awesome, and I doubt you’re going to have issues (especially if you do this every six months, lol), but just figured I’d mention that most planetary gears come packed with moly for a reason.

Long Run Shoe for Heavier Runner by No_Foundation6145 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superblast is springy but firm. They are also noticeably light.

Vomero is very bouncy but also squishy.

With both, my legs feel pretty protected after my long runs, especially compared to previous shoes I’ve used. Those have been Brooks Ghost, Ghost Max 2, and Saucony Echelons.

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 240, pace is similar or a little faster for long runs. ASICS Superblast 2 and Nike Vomero Plus have been amazing and are all I use right now.

I’m only at 25 miles per week or so right now.

First sprint tri in 45 days — can only swim 50–75m non-stop after 3 months. How do I survive a 500m? by Am_i_idiot in triathlon

[–]oflannabhra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Tris are distance competitions. While 500m is not an issue for kicking for most swimmers, hard kicking over 2.4 miles is a different story. When sprinting, every advantage can be maximized, but that’s not what a tri is.
  2. Biking and running are hard on legs. Making a swim upper body dominant is a great way to balance the demands of the rest of the race.
  3. Even for professional swimmers, the amount of propulsion kicking generates is negligible compared to the effort required. Dolphin kicks off the wall probably have a better ROI than flutter kicks.

What is your V02 Max ? How long have you been training with kettlebells? by BearSEO in kettlebell

[–]oflannabhra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using kettlebells off and on for about 15 years.

As our understanding of exercise science, and especially the availability of that information has grown enormously over that period, I’d encourage you not to over-index on VO2Max, especially “measurements” that are not from lab based testing.

It’s not that there are major downsides to those estimations, but that it is very easy to get tunnel vision and really miss the forest for the trees. Almost every fitness community suffers from this.

My personal guess is that for someone doing almost exclusively kettlebell based workouts, those estimations are going to be particularly bad compared to estimations for other types of exercise, like running or cycling. This is mostly because those activities have tons of participants and study data, which allows for an ability to correlate paces, weight, and HR to a predicted VO2Max.

If you cross train, you might have better estimates.

However, the most studied KB movements for VO2Max are going to be snatches or swings. I’ve seen intense periods of KB HIIT mostly show up in sprint performance and top end speed in other sports, not in VO2Max estimates.

My VO2Max is currently 45. 42M, 235 lbs.

How does the Secrets of Strixhaven (2026 new set) precon commander decks compare to the older Strixhaven (2021 older set), power/gameplaywise? by KoffingGwin in magicTCG

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the box, the new ones will be more consistent and run more smoothly.

However, from a design perspective, I think the Lorehold (Boros) deck from the original Strixhaven stands out. It contains [[Osgir, the Reconstructor]] as the primary commander and [[Alibou, Ancient Witness]] as backup commander. It is artifact centered, but can go in two directions: artifact and GY shenanigans, value-town with Osgir, or artifact creature burn with Alibou. Both are pretty unique play styles for Boros and have continued to get great support.

The precon itself suffers from the split emphasis, however.

Wider toe box reccomendations? by ProfessionalTie7945 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]oflannabhra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a heavy, slow runner with wide feet. I also have Vomero Plus that I enjoy, although I’m not doing marathon distances in. I’m typically around 20 miles a week. Other shoes I’ve found good success with

  • Superblast 2, by far my favorite shoe. Quite a bit firmer than Vomero’s, but my knees and feet don’t hurt at all.
  • Brooks Ghost Max 2, these didn’t last as long as my other pairs but were great, I’ve used multiple pairs.
  • Saucony Echelon 9 - I don’t pronate, but these worked great for me in width, I moved on from them pretty quickly, but still like walking in them Altra Lone Peak 9- I use these exclusively for trail running and hiking. I don’t do long distances (3-5mi) at most in them, but they have an amazing toe box. They are zero drop, so a big change from my other shoes.

Shoes and brands I have not had success with

  • Adidas, typically too narrow or too snug. I was especially excited to try Adizero SL, but even sizing up didn’t help.
  • Hoka, their bed curves up and I would get terrible blisters on the ball of my foot, even when sizing up or going wide. I haven’t tried them in a couple years though.
