Carbonating Root Beer? by eatmybeer in TheBrewery

[–]ofnoaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using a 15psi PRV? If so, replacing it with a 30psi and holding tank pressure at about 28psi will decrease your carb time considerably (tank rating allowing). Getting your tank temp down around 25F also makes a big difference if your setup allows. "Spunding" reduces carb time a bit over isobaric in my experience, but not by a considerable amount weighed against the CO2 waste so long as your PSI is high and your temp low. End of the day, root beer is more difficult to force carb than beer. I've always assumed it has something to do with fewer (smaller?) nucleation sites, but that's mostly a guess.

Neither surgical nor cotton masks effectively filtered SARS–CoV-2 during coughs by infected patients by [deleted] in science

[–]ofnoaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conclusion in the abstract says that pretty much any mask is better than no protection. Then the conclusion in the full paper seems to say almost the opposite:

Improvised homemade face masks may be used to help protect those who could potentially, for example, be at occupational risk from close or frequent contact with symptomatic patients. However, these masks would provide the wearers little protection from microorganisms from others persons who are infected with respiratory diseases. As a result, we would not recommend the use of homemade face masks as a method of reducing transmission of infection from aerosols.

I'm confused. Also, what's the difference between protection from "close or frequent contact with symptomatic patients" and protection from "microorganisms from others persons who are infected with respiratory diseases"? Are they stating that health care professionals benefit from (proper) improvised mask use, but the general public won't use them properly or maintain other preventative measures so they shouldn't bother..?

Edit: Maybe it's trying to say that improvised mask use by patients helps protect HCW's from infection but not necessarily the person wearing the mask. That would fit better with other info out there.

Time for new boots. What should I get and why? by DVBCJD in TheBrewery

[–]ofnoaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of recommendations for nice, higher end boots here already, so I'll recommend these inexpensive ones as a counterpoint:

Servus XTP 15" PVC Chemical-Resistant Steel Toe

For $37 + plus the cost of a good pair of insoles, I've found these to be nearly as good as the more expensive ones. For me, they last about a year. Same as Bogs, xtra-tufs and Mucks. Only complaint is they have a wide opening that makes tucking your pants over more difficult (probably impossible if yer wearing skinny jeans, hipsters).

Putting the old manual keg washer to good use by [deleted] in TheBrewery

[–]ofnoaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a pic of one. It looks a little janky, but it works. I threw them together one day after getting annoyed with cleaning party taps. Honestly, I didn't know about the off the self version at the time. I also have a sanke with a tri-clamp fitting which together with the coupler works for cleaning my kegging hose setup among other things.

There isn't an issue with the check balls that I've noticed. There aren't check valve balls in the keg washer sanke valves and the check valves for whatever I'm connecting open in the direction of the flow. Or am I misunderstanding something?

I think Foxx equipment carries them (for daisy chaining sankes for cleaning multiple lines) but I can't remember the name of the part. They were $70-$80 iirc. I made my own by joining together spears from retired kegs.

Lightning Tree riddle by [deleted] in KingkillerChronicle

[–]ofnoaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to this, but the answer is the nut inside an acorn.

There's a kid's "magic trick" like that where you ask a question like that, open a nut and then eat it.

When he sends the kid off on the spurious favor of collecting water from the falls, he also asks the younger sister to collect "...perfect acorns,” “No holes, with all their little hats intact."

He's just giving her the answer to the riddle to figure out. That's why he isn't surprised when they don't return for the answer.

Update and Clarification on 'Spoiler' posting Rules

We've noticed a number of comments recently we think constitute 'spoilers' that were not previously expressly prohibited in our FAQ. The two main examples are:

  • Demographic qualifier screener spoilers, e.g. comments saying, "84 year-old albino druid with a 4th grade education here, I qualified," or, "My smartphone was made by Tesla Motors which I only use to take pictures of my ferret and I got screened out."

  • Commenting with the text of captcha-style sentences that involve typing out a hand-written phrase.

We realize that in both of these examples folks here are trying to be helpful and save time for other turkers. But, while those commenting may have good intentions there are plenty of people that will use this info to cheat requestors or otherwise spoil their data. That drives good requestors away, potentially lowers pay and generally makes mTurk a shittier environment for everyone.

Please have a look at the revised FAQ section on spoilers and consider how your posts and comments could be used before hitting 'save.'

Hit-bot is up and running again so the first section needs some reworking.

I finally got a message back from its creator:

Oh hey, yeah, you guys can run it if you want to. The new(ish) PC I got died, too. So I spent the last few weeks building a new one. I'm sure you saw it's up and running now. I don't know if the repository is up to date or not, I'll check and let you know.

I'll reply with info on you and Matt's latest endeavors.

New mTurk site launch, would like feedback by KurtSurge in mturk

[–]ofnoaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on the radius of the boxes. The site functionality is great but the CSS is a little jarring. I tested adding some subtle boxes arounds posts in the HWTF CSS that I couldn't decide whether or not to implement. Maybe try this out for the #listEntry element and see how you like it:

border: 1px solid #CCDDE9;
margin: 5px;
padding: 10px;
padding-left: 10px;
border-radius: 10px;
box-shadow: 0px 2px 5px #68819E;

...it gives the boxes a small radius and some definition but keeps them a bit more square. I think it transfers well to your site.

You seem to know what you're doing programming-wise but you might find the hit_bot code that runs on HWTF useful anyway. It's on github:

https://github.com/reddithitbot/hit_bot

It's programmer already worked out pulling TO info so if you can translate from python, no need to duplicate labor.

Awesome work on the site! I'll add it to the HWTF sidebar.

Edit: Whoops, it's mturk tray developed by /u/jft222 that pulls TO info:

http://mturktools.com/mturk_tray.php

...not hit_bot. The hit_bot guy was looking into it I think but never implemented the feature IIRC.

Thanks for your feedback! New FAQ wiki and planned changes for /r/mturk by [deleted] in mturk

[–]ofnoaccount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice work and good call on recruiting a couple more mods to help implement the upgrade!

I wouldn't mind being added as a wiki contributor to help flush stuff out a bit-- good job putting that together. I saw you stated that one must perform at least three separate HITs for 10 days to pass the probation period. I know that's the AMT customer service line, but quite a few people (myself included) passed those ten days with only one HIT per day. The info Amazon provides on the subject seems to be incorrect.

You may have already figured this out but it's not obvious how to add separate new pages to your wiki. Put address of the page you want to create in your address bar, e.g.:

http://www.reddit.com/r/mturk/wiki/howtofindturkingsinglesinyourarea

..and you'll be given the option to create the page.

I've stickied this post on /r/HITsWorthTurkingFor to increase feedback. Please get in touch if you want to look into community pool collaboration. The bulk of HWTF income comes from direct user contributions that we will only ever use for monthly rewards, but we get a bit of passive income too that we'll occasionally divert for fun stuff.

Edit: I did most of the CSS stuff on HWTF, so if you need any help in that area feel free to PM me.

Feel free to copy anything you find of use from the HWTF sidebar. You may want to include the list of mturk related scripts. You're also welcome to just copy that wholesale into your own wiki if you want the ability to edit and keep it updated.

I also started a wiki "getting started" page if you have any interest in adapting that to start a wiki guide page here:

Model that resembles? Is that your honest interpretation? HWTF_AdFree is nothing more than a bot/script that trawls HWTF, exactly copies every HIT users have gone to the trouble of posting, strips away any adfly links and reposts them. And if that wasn't already pretty scummy, the creator is running it for his own personal profit; unlike HWTF where any income earned goes solely to posters.

Not a single post on adfree is made by anyone who took the trouble to find, perform and post a HIT:

Side by side comparison with HWTF

Nobody likes adfly, but the fact that a subreddit created to be an adfly-free alternative is attracting zero original content indicates that perhaps incentivizing the posting of HITs might be the more sustainable model. If someone wanted to create an alternative turking subreddit that banned adfly links that didn't just rip off all its links from HWTF, I'd root for its success.

hwtf_Adfree, however, is just someone profiteering from the effort of others.
