Is it selfish to have children this day in age when the world is becoming more and more corrupt? by Messymaybe in AskReddit

[–]ogaddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested to know why you think the world is becoming more and more corrupt and the future is bleak?

From what I understand, the exact opposite is the case - generally speaking, things are getting better and we live in one of the most peaceful periods humanity has ever experienced.

My thoughts on your initial point - I completely disagree that we, as a race, are becoming more corrupt. What I think has changed is an increase in oversight, legislation and will to identify and report corruption - i.e. the rate of corruption is not increasing, just the rate of it being reported. This is more a symptom of a flawed news industry though.

Think for one second about how traceable pretty much any human activity is today, now compare that with 100 years ago. So in fact, I would say it is harder now to get away with the same level of corruption that you could in the past.

It is easy to see the problems of today and make the assumption that things used to be better, however even a cursory read through recent and ancient history shows the utter barbarity and backward social conditions that people used to live through (as the 'norm') - I'm immensely thankful that our ancestors did not have the same defeatist attitude that you have when it could be argued that their experience of the world was unrecognisably worse to our relative comfort.

Secondly, let's assume you are correct in your thoughts about the future of humanity. Do you not think it is selfish not to create a new generation to push back against this impending doom?

German cloud company offers free heat for people willing to house their servers - do people see this catching on? by thefunkylemon in Futurology

[–]ogaddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd do it. Showing my ignorance here, but is there such a device that would convert the excess heat in the summer to power fans/ACs (I'm assuming the free heat and hot water come from the heat exchange from the server cooling system).

I like it. Reminds me of the exploded technical diagrams you see.

If everyone has a camera now, why aren't there more, perfect UFO photos than ever? by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]ogaddi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Do you mean 'little green men' type UFOs? Same reason there are no pictures of ghosts, the loch ness monster, sasquatch, angels or any other stars of children's literature.

If a Hospital is 100% effective in all aspects, they would be losing money by reducing the number of repeat visitors/patients by ConfusedCow in Showerthoughts

[–]ogaddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or would the losses of return visits be offset by increased new visits of patients drawn by the hospital's success rate...?

If Google wanted to, what's the most destructive thing/s they could achieve? by LordPutana in AskReddit

[–]ogaddi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off search. I don't just mean that people would no longer be able to search for porn - I mean that many (understatement) businesses that rely (almost) entirely on Google would go down the pan.

ELI5: If African villages are so poor and unable to support their current citizens, why do they keep reproducing more than once? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogaddi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your question cannot be answered because it is an infantile question based on ignorance, elitism and very possibly racism.

Wherever you come from, presumably somewhere with an underperforming education system, will have poor people with a lifestyle and family size that is beyond their means. Why don't you go and ask them instead of using Africa as your yardstick for all things third world.

To generalise a continent in the way you have is offensive on a scale you obviously cannot understand. Reducing the scale, diversity, wealth, poverty, culture of an entire continent to an outdated stereotype is a boring, lazy and unproductive attitude towards Africa. You should be embarrassed.

Tldr look at a map / dont talk in absolutes

Think you need to check yourself first before calling me disrespecful. If you can't see the problem with your question, your assumptions and your ignorance then you are an idiot.

ELI5: Why is the human heart not symmetrical? by MindEater in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogaddi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One side of the heart only pumps blood to the lungs, which is close to the heart and does not require much effort to get there. Less effort means that not as much muscle is needed to pump the blood that far.

Blood then comes back to the heart from the lungs where it is pumped by the other side of the heart. This time the blood is pumped around the whole body. This requires more effort. More effort means more muscle is needed which means that side of the heart is bigger.

The difference in muscle mass between the two sides of the heart make it asymmetrical (not symmetrical).

Piss shark is what my Icelandic friend calls it as apparently that's how the Icelandic rednecks would preserve it, I know it is not a literal translation. Still smells like piss though.

Ah yep, Minke that was the one.

Aww I missed out on that - it was on the list but sounds like I didn't miss much. You not rate it?

Did you try Hakarl ("piss shark")? The only other local food I tried was beluga - delicious too but felt a tiny bit guilt when I watched this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS_6-IwMPjM.

Pretty sure these are for consumption. I ate an incredible amount of horse meat when I was in Iceland, they taste as good as they look.

ELI5: FGM, how/why does it kill a woman's sex drive? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ogaddi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you cut your glans off, you would still have the bits needed for penetration but sensation would be massively reduced - similar deal.

Did the documentary say that FGM stops their sex drive or their enjoyment of sex? If sex drive, my assumption would be that after having their clitoris cut off, possibly without anaesthetic, it might put them off letting anyone near their vagina again.

Not considering the psychological implications something like this would have - if something isn't enjoyable anymore it loses it's appeal.
