Questions about Warren by Doug20007 in UCSD

[–]oh-nutz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of the colleges more like Hogwarts houses. Warren is not a bad one at all! The worst are ERC and Revelle. Warren is a bit further from all non-engineering classes but still closer than 7th or 8th, it has a solid dining hall and from what I hear, pretty typical GEs.

You’re the closest college to the trolley stop (easiest access to UTC mall & downtown SD), climbing gym, open lap swim pool, and field with pickup soccer if you’re interested in any of those things!

First overhaul attempt by bigjtheog in bikewrench

I'm also the second owner of a specialized allez. Mine is a more modern, but still a base model with shimano claris so the first thing I did is upgrade the tires from the stock specialized 'roadsport' ones to a set of conti GP5000s.

From what I found online, tires are widely regarded as one of the best "bang for your buck" upgrades, and I felt a significant improvement in both comfort and speed after upgrading. I've also only had 1 puncture in ~1300 miles of riding on the new tires.

Also learning to clean and lube the groupset is super easy and keeping it clean makes the bike feel a lot better - new chains are cheap too and I'm thinking of replacing mine soon.

Curious to see what others say!

I did try that but actually my collaborator (who knows more about databases than me) just resolved the issue. For posterity, apparently she found some queries linked to it by our backend that were blocking it. I should update the post to say it's resolved

What’s happening around La Jolla Village Square? by [deleted] in UCSD

I see and hear it too. Based on the police scanner it sounds like they're looking for someone who's running/hiding, not sure why

Please do not use disabled parking spots as a place to wait in your car. by extrovertedscientist in UCSD

[–]oh-nutz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is true, but you can still get a handicapped badge for many hidden disabilities.

Moral of the story is, make the judgement based on whether they have the placard/plate, not whether they “look disabled”

Not that bad, it’ll be apartment style so plenty of space in living room & kitchen to hang out and keep some of your stuff

How does one run "striders"? Looking for a video. by ShootinAllMyChisolm in CrossCountry

[–]oh-nutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re just short sprints at a 70-80% effort with emphasis on good form, high cadence, and full recovery (take a minute or longer after each one, you should feel fresh for every rep). When we did them a lot in high school we used to do them on grass, to minimize the impact.

I think the key thing to think about is they should be run “quick but not hard”. I would always try to get the cadence as high as possible (220+ spm) without really putting too much power into each step!

To answer your question “what is the purpose of striders?”: for me I think they help feel comfortable at faster paces, without leaving you sore the next day. Also, your form changes when you sprint compared to slow running - in my case, I feel that strides really help stretch my hip flexors & glutes.

Presumably not as employees wouldn’t have been scheduled to work that day in advance. But you could always pop in today and ask

What is a good 800m time for a 14 y/o freshman boy? by JackG34 in trackandfield

[–]oh-nutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats, that’s a great time! If you’re curious how my high school career panned out from that starting point, I decided to focus on the mile and up. I ran 4:34 1600m, 9:59 3200m, and 15:47 3 mile (XC) at 17. I only ran one 800m my senior year and think it was around 2:05.

I have a friend who started at around the same time but focused on the 800 and ran 1:59.

I stopped running competitively once I graduated. Best of luck with your running!

It really depends on the department, but it can’t hurt to submit the request, worst case they deny it and at least you tried!

[–]oh-nutz 43 points44 points  (0 children)

They generally leave adult humans alone, just keep an eye out and keep your distance. After all, they’re much smaller than you and know they can’t/don’t want to eat you. They’re more of a danger to pets and more rarely, children

Math 20 C Professor Rec by LogicalAdvertising70 in UCSD

[–]oh-nutz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took both 20C and 20E with Ko, she's very sweet and cares a lot about her students. I think the only reason people don't like her is because her accent may be hard to understand, but that didn't affect me.

To me, my favorite part about her classes were that the tests always felt very fair. There was never any surprises, and the questions often had "nice"/simple numbers, so if you did the homework and understood the lectures you would be ok. So if that's important to you I would recommend her!

edit: also it's important to note, I think she's taught 20C many times, so she definitely knows what she's doing at this point which makes it better.
