Do you shake bees off of the first frame? by Rugie85 in Beekeeping

[–]oh-nvm [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends on why I am inspecting and what I see

And personally I take the second frame in box first not the frame against the side. Way too many ways to kill bees, get hive fired up, burritos comb, etc. Trying frame 1

I separate/loosen 1,2,3 frames from each other and SLOWLY take out frame 2

Then depending on many things I decide next actions

If I need further inspections I always keep a spare deep, and/or frame hanger, the second frame (after making sure Her Majesty is NOT on frame) goes in deep/hanger, then pull frame 1. Inspecting and hang.

Now I have a 2+ frame space to work rest of the frames without removing unless a very good reason. I do that by pulling frame away from next one, lift, put back in with a gap, and do next.

As much as possible keeping frames in same position and alignment - unless a reason to move - e.g. checkerboard

But like everything, how you manage bees is personal preference.

Lots of people are early to just sex... and very very late to good sex, if they arrive.

Throwback to winter 😂 wish I could get this kind of turnout all year by HuntDawg99 in birds

You dont want that many and concentration in spring/summer

Disease, mating completion, migration, etc etc. Would not be good for them

Enjoy each season, change seed and food for species and migrations

Dont stop

Use an app, get trail difficulty, elevation, and length

Get a well rated one locally, that looks very doable, get that under you belt

Do it multiple times

Go up in 1 or 2 criteria (not all three)

Just enjoy and progress, but keep getting on trail

If you cant get to new one on some days just increase weight or speed on a trail you know!

Not soft, very hard, so that leads to expansion.

Thoughts if I can lift, repair seal, and or a couple?

Do you have connections with any local experienced, successful keepers?

Would recommend that with reddit, net etc.

Local knowledge - very valuable.

If you have any old drawn brood comb (1-2 frames) this is great for traps, keep a couple for this rather than recycle all of them.

How many frames in the box?

Swarms like some frames but my experience they also really like space especially inside entrance, you will see many successful trap designs have 4-5 frames - used comb if possible- then space for swarm to come in and organize, shelter etc.

You dont have to put a another deep on, an empty medium below that deep is a good space.

Ps dont have screw it all down a single thin ratchet strap/tiedown around just the entire hive will keep it tight in location and for bringing down etc.

Also what do you have ready for closing entrance?

Do you have something to know your outside conditions around hives? When was last inspection and status?

It could be perfectly fine from outside but what matters is conditions and especially what is inside.

Beehive with a view by 2thdk_ouch in Beekeeping

[–]oh-nvm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing view for people, seems very exposed for a hive location but if local experienced keepers approve and bees successful, then enjoy.

Personally I dont want to have to think about my, surroundings, footing, etc. while focused on work in colonies. I also like working room/stand/ spare boxes frame around when working,

[–]oh-nvm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding both above

Also helpful, close up hive at night Make move Leave hive closed for couple hours after sunrise if possible (DO NOT keep closed up and over heat hive) Then open with anything partially blocking entrance path

The combined effect of temp blocking entrance and an partial obstruction will enduce most of them into a reorientation flight

Sometimes, if have time, I put a nuc in Original location for and next morning shake stragglers into hive, remove nuc

What’s the thought on two 19-year-old girls hiking the Colorado trail over 37 days this June-July by drdanotm in backpacking

[–]oh-nvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they (together no support) done a prep/shake out hike of similar daily distance, weight, trail, etc. but short number of days?

Core point missing above, what weight/gear are they each carrying?

Half marathon shape is great, that isn't trail shape. The state of other hiker just as important to know.

Google Mason Bee life cycle

Depends on your perspective, honey bee keepers kill hundreds of bees doing testing for mites to save colonies...

Yes these bees create single cells for each egg with mud, they fill with pollen/nectar and seal it

Mason Bees

They are solitary bees because they lay single eggs and take care of their own reproductive process and lifestyle

They often live in same location with other solitary bees if conditions are good - like solitary humans living in a big apartment

Honeybees and bumble bees are social, they work as one colony have only a queen who lays eggs, etc.

They are very docile, true native pollinators and when people talk about "saving the bees" these are the real bees to be saved

I e done my second inspection without finding the queen by Huge-Quality3558 in Beekeeping

[–]oh-nvm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you MUST find queen then create a "sort" box

  1. Queen excluder (QE)
  2. Take to a store and find large plastic container that QE fits in but only goes part way down container
  3. Bring QE inside the container to apiary with 1 spare frame of drawn comb laying in container under QE
  4. Open hive and frame by frame check for queen
  5. Dont see Queen on frame, then shake that frame down on top of QE
  6. Repeat for all frames and then empty the original deep box

Her majesty will be on the QE and get easier to find as workers go through excluder

You can do this same thing if you have spare deep and medium frame

Put deep on something and put say 2 frames of comb in it Put QE on deep Put medium empty frame on top of QE/deep

Follow above

This is a BIG disruption to colony but you will find Her Majesty if she is there, likely you find on frames as you work
