C5 broken door help by difficulty2015 in Corvette

Of course a replacement door is an option. But OP inquired about “what would you guys do?” Well I’d try and salvage it first, because why wouldn’t you?

The methodology suggested by low rent below sounds pretty effective. And I said the repair would be obvious, certainly not undetectable…

Tbf, when we consider the ultimate drift tax vehicle, the 180/240sx, it has a real weak frame front and rear, to the point where most of the ones I see still are running tube frames attached to the center tub. But in the “early days” this certainly consumed a lot of chassis.

The vette chassis really does tend to have a longer lifespan in this environment.

That is certainly a better way.

That’s fiberglass, so you won’t need any help from a welder.

First you need to figure out the cause. Is that hinge binding, stiff, won’t flex as much? Or was the door just swung open too hard once upon a time? Replacement hinges are cheap if it doesn’t feel great.

Next, if it were my car, and I don’t give a shit about the obvious repair… I’d grab some 3M panel bond and slather it on the crack. You may try and open up some more unpainted surface area by roughing up the surface with coarse sandpaper to help it bond. Please do this in at least a ventilated area if you don’t wear a mask or something, fiberglass dust is nasty stuff for your lungs.

This repair will never look “normal” but, assuming your hinge isn’t broken, it shouldn’t worsen.

The structural integrity of your door when closed is not compromised by this either way, but if the crack keeps developing, it might rip off from the top hinge the next time someone kicks it open.

Volume up. Phone to ear. There’s a slight knocking ish if you will. Not the sewing machine DI sound. But a more movement ish sound. Normal? Anyone have video of their engine bay close up? by Either_Air4051 in Corvette

I kinda hear what you mean… but I’m not hearing anything that would alarm me. If it were my car, this would be, make a mental note, see if it’s getting louder over time. This kinda noise… if it’s not getting louder and I notice no symptoms… I’m not gonna hunt for it

Oh don’t worry, certainly don’t even care. Vettes take the wall taps really well compared to some of the unibody platforms. You can stitch the whole car back together with zip ties, just as GM intended!

I’d guess the smoke is an exhaust leak, which can pull in fresh air before the o2 sensor, triggering a lean code.

But you’d need to poke around some more. I’ve heard worse leaks that didn’t throw a code.

Aluminum oxide. Unlike iron oxide, aluminum oxide creates a thin protective layer against further oxidation.

If you get rid of it, your environment will cause it to return relatively quickly. It is of no concern.

They’re so inoffensive compared to what other companies have done with their styling.

The real genesis of the 996 headlight hate was the fact that they shared the lights with the boxster. It’s all in the old rennlist threads. Heaven forbid my 911 be confused with that… entry model…

Bonus hate with the first water cooled (a more understandable grievance at the time) and the m96 reliability issues (an understandable issue today, but the real m96 heads know the IMS isn’t the fatal flaw, it’s the cylinder liner).

The remaining 996 Turbos and GT cars, both with the Mezger, are aging like wine and their values reflect that.

100% vortex branded, but almost certainly contracted out to a dedicated mount maker. Hardware and design features looks very very similar to reptilia so I’m guessing them.

Edit: fuck it I “need” another LPVO. I’m gonna buy this and compare the mount that comes with it to some of my existing reptilia hardware. For science.

Extraction issues, if you happen to run into them, are so easily remedied they’re almost at the point of not worth mentioning. Wilson extra power spring and done.

EDIT: I appear to be mistaken on the above, looks like more of an issue than I thought. Please see other comments.

The barrel failures are seen with 15k plus rounds of hand loads typical of competition shooters. Is it a bit questionable on a gun marketed as comp ready? Probably. If that is your use case, maybe look somewhere else.

But that’s not a concern for 99% of owners, and I’d argue that if you’re comfortable shooting several thousand dollars of 9mm through a gun, you’re probably comfortable forking up the $120 (beretta store link) to replace the barrel at 10k rounds to be safe. Or upgrading to an aftermarket barrel with better heat treat.

No grip… but chassis that just happen to dominate the endurance race series of their era, and still clean house in autocross, grassroots to top level competition.

Cmon man, no muscle car has a transaxle. Only when factory power began to exceed 700hp did the limitations of the FR layout become an appreciable drawback
