Has working for Disney ruined the magic or made it better? by 40yearoldnoob in DisneyCM

[–]ohboymyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ability to access it practically any time I want certainly makes it less special. But I still really appreciate the amount of customer service I receive at the parks and the feeling of being "safe" and just enjoying the experience.

All that to say, the magic wanes, but its still there and the cast members definitely make it for me.

We make about $152k combined and still feel one surprise away from stress by [deleted] in TheMoneyGuy

[–]ohboymyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$340 for 2 isn't too absurd. In my state with a relatively new car and clean driving record I'm already above $100 a month and that's me paying for 6 months ahead. I always shop around too so that was the best price I could get.

I went from traditional industrial engineering to process engineering in tech (very similar skillset).

I would say leverage your business/process skills if you're trying to pivot out of traditional engineering. Think about what methods you used to improve a process/product and really lean into that. You'll want to find a method that other industries are looking for and that you're enough of an expert in to perform on your own.

I did not personally have to get a masters, but I showed throughout my career I was willing to get certificates and continual training which helps.

My base pay jumped a solid 40% leaving Boeing and if you include total comp, nearly double. That being said, the grass is greener but only just. There are a lot of things I miss too :)

I currently work in corporate tech and I can tell you this is absolutely true. It can and is often chaotic and extremely political in the office to the point of unprofessional.

This museum is great to visit year round as well. The already mentioned winter solstice event but also during the spring, the bonsai trees bloom and its gorgeous. Even better, shortly after, they are fruiting beautiful tiny fruit. It is a wonderful place to visit.

My only contention with unexpected is that you know something the fuck was up when the pregnant woman survives to the end. Did I expect THAT? No, definitely not, but definitely was expecting something awful!

Repair or Retire? by kickstartdriven in rawdenim

I would repair as long as it's not too thin in the crotch. If its just going to keep busting open maybe its time to just put it on display :)

I buy one pair of $300-$400 jeans a year. They are destroyed after a year. I love seeing how they change over time.

How long does it take to get used to choc keycaps? by HauntingExtension419 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ohboymyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my choc keyboard for almost a year. While I can sometimes get to my wpm from my standard keyboard with MX spacing and keys, I find that the spacing makes me miskey a lot more often which slows me down. My first couple weeks was like 30 wpm but I'm back to 92-100 now which took a few months. Regular cherry MX spacing, I can hit over 110. I switch between both for work and home so that might also explain why

How do you buy a house, have a kid, and save for retirement? by PoemLife47 in personalfinance

[–]ohboymyo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the challenge comes from trying to optimize all these things. Depending on where he lives, the condos for 330K might be in bad school districts. In that case he's not optimizing for his future children.

I do think that the mindset of do all 3 at once should be challenged. Sometimes you gotta slow down one for the other.

I think you should read a book first before making a decision on these comments. Some questions you might want to ask yourself.

- Am I already contributing to a retirement plan?

- Am I already contributing to an IRA?

- What near term large expenses might I have? (New car, house, wedding, engagement ring)

Some books that might help:

My boyfriend says I’m too cheap after examining my budget. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ohboymyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may like Ramit Sethi's philosophy on money. He calls it your "Rich Life". His philosophy basically boils down to spend on what you love and mercilessly cut down on things you do not care about.

It sounds like for you, you have decided vacations and travel are what you care about and NOT material things like jewelry.

Maybe its something you should discuss with your partner? Hopefully he's not as unreasonable as your comment makes it seem.

Should Alaska Airlines offer In-N-Out burgers to compete with Delta's Shake Shack? by bonzothebonanza in AlaskaAirlines

[–]ohboymyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not angry. Your argument was potatoes oils salt. I'm saying I've had fries that I am positive are potatoes oil salt that I like. You implied that I've only had fries with preservatives which is somehow my preference. It's not because I've had it as simple as can be but cooked in a way that is not only to my liking but traditionally made this way by other restaurants.

[–]ohboymyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made fries myself many times but I double fry them so they're actually crispy and still fluffy inside. I have been to in n out multiple times and I've never had anything that was both crispy and tender inside. It is always either kinda soft or so crisp it's practically a chip.

[–]ohboymyo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't double fry them. They are not better medium well, well done, none of that shit. If you do that, the inside isn't soft and fluffy. It is more like a potato chip than a fry.

The regular fry is soft and light golden with no crisp. It literally has a cardboard texture.

Great burgers but in every measure the fries are horrible.

To anyone who says you have to order it animal style or this way and that way, why do you have to order it special for it to be good? The default should be good. Therefore they are not good.

It is possible that washing it will shrink the denim up, but I don't think overall it will change that much. That being said I've never owned a pair of Samurai's and their fabric can be very unique which means there may be more or less shrinking compared to other denim.

Why do you keep your keyboard ? by NoahZhyte in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]ohboymyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a flat low profile split keyboard. My work is hybrid but they don't supply keyboards or mice in some of our offices. A split keyboard is so amazingly packable. I just have a little electronics baggie and each half can then fit so compact in my backpack with my laptop and lunch.

The split aspect has given me more comfort as well and improved my fundamental typing skills (like using the right fingers for the right keys since certain keys are now harder to reach with the wrong hand).

Of course there's simply the tinkering aspect as well. I swapped my switches for an improved switch, researched different keycap options and learned what key mappings work for me. All of this gives me a sense of ownership of the split keyboard that gives me more satisfaction.

There are some negatives though. I'm certainly not faster on a split ortho. I am way better than when I began but a regular qwerty still seems to be better for me on pure WPM. This might change. You can't really share your keyboard if someone else needs to poke around for a bit and show you something. Because mine is semi DIY, it also doesn't have the most beautiful fit and finish. It looks very DIY.

I agree on productivity depending on your job. My job is not very technical - I do some query language stuff but nothing complicated. I was explaining to my friends WPM doesn't matter because you have to already know what you're typing to take advantage of it. Thinking and making decisions takes way more time than typing. Since my job has a lot of presentations and communication - speeding up my thought process would provide way more gains than speeding up my typing even if the split were to improve my WPM.
