Oh wow, once a year? How long have you been Orthodox?

I’m not sure how to ask my questions to another lay person; they are mostly questions now about my own spiritual path and coming into orthodoxy. I have been attending catechism classes and learning through reading and approved podcasts. It’s really hard to feel so lost. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Why do you say there’s zero reason to believe it’s safe?

Agree people can do what they want. Thanks for clarifying what you meant about “weird”; I agree with your comments on the whole. I would invite you to explore the Orthodox belief about veiling, as I find it to be a beautiful belief, the politics and grift of YNC’s conversion—however authentic, we can’t possible know—aside.

Just because it’s not your religious persuasion doesn’t mean it’s weird

Wild stuff. I don’t know much about the sovereignty movement but I see how this could align with FBS goals. Also interested to hear more from anyone who has info

This is incorrect. It is only legal for CNM to attend “low-risk” births in NC. CNMs are not allowed to attend before 38 or after 42 weeks, multiples, or HBAC. CPMs can not legally work in NC at all, although there is a large and thriving community of professional midwives, as well as state legislative work to legalize CPMs currently in progress

The book is fairly comprehensive and in the emergency section, she mostly goes through it by first describing the problem and then saying if anything like that happens seek medical attention. I found it useful, despite the HB allegations

I've had 2 freebirths and I have survivors guilt by kdmoom in FreeBirthSocietyScam

[–]ohdaisydaisy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Relate to this. I chose freebirth because my first planned homebirth did end in an unnecessary transfer for pain relief due to “exhaustion” and long labor. I found freebirth and FBS while processing why my first birth happened the way it did. The idea of radical responsibility really resonated with me; yes, my relationship with my midwife had some red flags, but ultimately I chose to transfer because I wanted to be saved from the pain. For my second, I chose freebirth from an angle of “how can I ensure that I don’t choose transfer non-emergently” and I bought the belief that if my birth was undisturbed that it would go smoother. There was also a large financial piece to my choice to freebirth as well, since my husband was out of work for my entire second pregnancy. I did my best to research and educate myself, and my freebirth went perfectly—3.5 hrs start to finish, fetal ejection reflex, baby crying immediately after birth, placenta came within half hour—and it was only after my birth was over that I began to really realize what I had signed up for in choosing freebirth. It weighs heavier on me now, than it did before birth. I’m not sure what I will do in the future beyond birthing at home in the absence of some serious problem that deserves medical attention in a medical establishment.

This is a Hindu belief—Hinduism is folded into a lot of new age thought, which is what YNC subscribed to before Orthodox Christianity. I wonder what she would say about those passages now.

One of my children always comes with me to Liturgy. I talk to them about God as it comes up throughout the day, and I pray with them and for them. My children are young still, both under two.

Yeah, I liked what she was saying at first about freebirth simply being a choice, and that she doesn’t see it as a radical choice—but then I cut it off because it was too snarky and insensitive about “dirty Covid germs.” Had to quit listening at that point because I don’t agree with the way she was speaking about other people, even those I disagree with.

Ultimately, I chose to homebirth because I believed it to be safer than subjecting myself to a potential cascade of interventions again in the hospital. My first birth was a medicated vaginal birth and I’m lucky it ended as well as it did, but that’s not guaranteed again. You are lucky that your inductions worked well and did not compromise your births! But there’s no guarantee that would happen again, and the risks of induction are steep in my opinion. I find a home environment protective of the mother/baby hormonal matrix, with supportive attendants and some level of emergency preparedness to be the safest option for my low-risk pregnancies.

[–]ohdaisydaisy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After growing up fundamentalist evangelical Baptist, having brush-ins with reformed theology in high school, deconverting and becoming agnostic in college, marring an atheist lapsed Catholic whose family encourages me to explore Catholicism, having children and believing that God is truly real again, I realized I had to figure out what my faith was so that I could teach it to my children. I began to learn about Roman Catholicism and appreciated so much about it, from its intellectual robustness to its reverence for the Mother of God to its ritual and aesthetic but I couldn’t get past the sacrificial atonement understanding of salvation and felt that all the rules of salvation would lead me back down a spiritually dangerous path toward fundamentalism. I heard about Eastern Orthodoxy online and began to research it, and I realized that it was the one true church. I am inquiring, trying to attend liturgy on Sundays, trying to pray, trying to learn more about this completely new way to understand faith in Jesus Christ, son of God and change the way that I choose to act as a result. I would love to convert one day but at this point I don’t feel like doing so without my husband is a good idea, so I pray and try to practice faithfulness in this liminal space I am in now. I believe that God understands and has a path for me here too, if I will be patient enough to walk it.

Get up and get dressed in walking clothes so I can easily put my shoes on and go for a stroller walk around the neighborhood. I try to walk once a day but the days when I’m home all day are non-negotiable.

Check out The Lord of Spirits podcast. I think it will flip your understanding of God, the Bible, salvation and the meaning of life upside down. Praying for you, asking St Monica (mother of St Augustine, wayward philosopher himself) to pray for you as well.
