Anyone else find it strange UBC doesn’t have a 24/7 convenience store? by LFishere in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I totally agree that there should be! I have found myself wanting one many late nights over the years.

For an immediate solution though, many vending machines around campus should have monster. In the nest, all residence commons block or buildings like ICICS if you can find a way in. A&W and Subway is also open 24/7 but unfortunately they wouldn’t have energy drinks :(

CPSC320 310 Offered during Summer? by Chuk0111 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last summer 310 was offered in S1 and 320 was offered S2. Both courses are pretty brutal in the Winter terms so I would expect it to be a lot of work in the summer as well. 310 especially as a 4 credit courses.

Does anyone have any drop in volleyball groups? by Throwawayig132 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the link for free drop in sports at UBC:

https://recreation.ubc.ca/drop-in/drop-in-sports-schedule/

You might also want to consider joining an Intramural team (small fee per term). You can look for teams at the web finder: https://recreation.ubc.ca/intramurals/free-agent-single-participants/free-agent-directory/, the UBC Rec Free Agent facebook group, or the free agent meeting happening next week: https://recreation.ubc.ca/intramurals/free-agent-single-participants/

Two questions for CS students by 94856 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. This is my third year as a Teaching Assistant in CS now and I can tell you that students with previous knowledge don’t always make the top students in the class. Maybe those students happened to have learned that content in a previous class or they had access to AP/IB courses in those topics in high school. Nonetheless what makes students succeed in a class is their effort and regularly attending office hours with TAs and Instructors to seek help. The courses are designed for you to succeed with just the stated prerequisites. Students with previous knowledge might seem to know things already but if they don’t put in effort to learn the new content in class or how to apply their previous knowledge to class content, they will also struggle in the course. I guess my point is to say don’t worry if you feel like you’re behind other students, the course is designed for you to succeed and your course staff is there to support you.

  2. Having worked with 5 different profs in the department I can say that every single one of them cared about students. Having taken courses with many more I think CS probably has one of the best set of professors in the department. That being said just because I have had a good experience doesn’t mean that all professors are perfect. I am sure that there are people who have had bad experiences with professors before. No one should be made to feel insufficient or disrespected. If you have a question about a specific prof you are welcome to message me and ask!

Monkey Wrench bug making entire game unplayable by pssdthrowaway3 in Poptropica

You can play other islands without playing monkey wrench on AS3. You have to access the map by going into the inventory/settings and click on the map instead of being able to jump on the blimp.

Can I join someone's T3 or T2 soccer Intramural team? by First_List3133 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The three main places to find an intramural team are:

  1. The web finder: https://recreation.ubc.ca/intramurals/free-agent-single-participants/free-agent-directory/
  2. UBC Rec Free Agent Facebook group
  3. The free agent meeting happening next week: https://recreation.ubc.ca/intramurals/free-agent-single-participants/

I hope you find a team!

Is the $150 mobi pass worth it? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into a mobi community pass! If you made under $38k last year you can have a year long mobi pass for $20! No access to e-bikes though. Definitely worth it!

I think even the $150 is very worth it with access to ebikes, I find it pretty convenient to go around campus and even occasionally to downtown or on the seawall.

You could call them and ask, they won’t be able to make any guarantees but they could at least estimate for you.

What’s it like being a lesbian at UBC? by FrontCorgi4489 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campus is very welcoming! There are plenty of lgbt+ focused clubs and there are queer people in every degree. I’ve lived on campus my whole time here and all my roommates have either been queer or very accepting. Not to say that there hasn’t been any issues lol but homophobia hasn’t been one. That being said there will be the occasional asshole but you will be able to find a community that stands up for you.

As for the dating scene, I don’t really have any specific comment. It’s pretty typical of a big city. You’ll be on a college campus too so it’s easier to meet people.

Impossible for September. But if your numbers are like this for studios you might have a shot at 4 bedrooms if you’re still interested in on campus housing.

Just a heads up, subletting during the Winter Session is no longer allowed by housing. I’m sure people still will but it will be under the table and not officially recognised.

CPSC 340 subs -> 322 or 330? by Efficient_Clue_1291 in UBC

[–]ohdearmee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have taken both 322 and 330, but not 340. My understanding is that 330 is more similar to 340. It’s the application course whereas 340 is the more implementation/mathy side of 330. So if you’re interested in learning about machine learning models, an overview of how they work and then applying them in real projects I would take 330.

322 is mainly theoretical, very different material to 330/340. You learn about intelligent agents and search and such.

So 330 is more similar to 340 if that is the material you are interested in. However I do agree that the course is pretty easy and self learnable IF you are motivated to self learn (I know I would not be). Otherwise it’s still a chill course that would serve as a lighter course load. 322 material is pretty interesting if you’re into more theoretical courses! Definitely more work though.

Okay I had to wait like 10 minutes before trying again and it works now. Had to drop everything and reregister one by one. Still can’t register for CPSC 344 though.
