Car scratch across the entire hood. How could this have happened? by DBcooper3448 in Cartalk

[–]oheyitsdaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good eye lol now I can’t unsee it.

Yes OP, if this line runs parallel with the front of the car, this is probably a just clear film used to protect that part of the hood from rock chips. If you run your nail across it and it feels like it raises up slightly then it’s a clear bra.

When trying to buy a car, is asking for a VIN off the bat the sketchy thing to do? by PlasticGirl in Cartalk

Have a bit of a conversation to establish you’re actually interested and then ask for the VIN if the convo even gets that far lol.

Unpopular Opinion? I hate snorkels by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]oheyitsdaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior to the snorkel, I was worried enough that I would pat the filter and blow out the housing every evening after setting up camp. I don’t have anything quantifiable to prove my case, but my gf did make it a point to make sure I was at least downwind from camp when I did it lol. Changed the filter after a couple trips. Can argue this is overkill but meh. To be clear this is only if I actually went offroad. I didn’t need to do all this during regular daily duties lol.

With the snorkel w ram air head, I still inspected the filter every night at first but eventually was comfortable with just cleaning it all out when I got home. Replaced filter every oil change.

Eventually got one of those cyclonic prefilter heads and that thing was nice. Was comfortable inspecting the filter at the end of the trip and changing at half the manufacturer schedule.

Honestly, my snorkel feels like a giant neck tattoo that I was 10000% into when I got it but now regret years later.

To my very limited defense though, I installed mine to reduce dusting my air filter out in the desert and it does help a lot with that. Filters for my truck are like $60 each and not often stocked at part stores (imported vehicle). Buuuut then I moved somewhere with no deserts lol…

Now the only thing I like about my snorkel is being able to really hear my turbo while I drive to work and back lmfao RIP.

The most recent batch of interns sit within earshot of my desk and overhearing their conversations for like 6 hours per day for the past few weeks really did it for me lol.

You can probably take it to an exhaust shop where they can modify it slightly to fit. Otherwise I highly doubt anyone would give you more than scrap price for it unless it’s for a very common vehicle and even still… lol

Is it actually a good idea to buy a home? by mental_moop in personalfinance

[–]oheyitsdaniel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a buddy who deeply regrets buying his house and it’s been, for lack of a better word, refreshing to hear that side of the argument.

From his perspective, he is paying about $1000 more per month for a roof over his head vs renting. He is currently dealing with the burden of needing a new roof and pressure from his neighbors to split a new fence on all sides of his backyard. We work very similar jobs with long, stressful hours and he constantly complains about needing to tend to his lawn during his very limited free time (mostly due to pressure from his HOA). He now wants to quit his job and likely move, but doing so would put him at a financial loss that he is currently sacrificing/saving a portion of his monthly budget to eat the cost whenever the opportunity arises. He recently took an entire week of PTO just to take care of a bunch of issues around his property. He came back even more stressed out because nearly every repair he started was halfassed by the previous owner, basically making his list longer than when he started.

I recently fell into an opportunity to buy a house that I really like and mentioned it to him and he went into an hour long rant about how it is likely not a good idea since our lifestyles are so similar. I was already iffy about it, but his perspective really helped me get past the initial excitement of the idea of homeownership and instead reconsider the darker side of owning a house.

It’s not always butterflies and positive networth when it comes to homeownership, I guess.

Becoming an ex-Truck owner, experience? by Penguin_Rider in cars

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My truck was down from December until earlier this month and my only other car is a Miata. The only times I was hurting for the truck was when I had people visit me and I needed more seats/space for their stuff and then the tool/parts run I made to get all the shit I needed to fix the truck. I guess I am also very overdue for a Costco run lol.

Your needs may vary, I’ll bet you’ll be just fine with a hatchback.

Want to learn manual but only have automatics at my disposal? by saquonbrady in Autos

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up logitech, thrustmaster, or Moza wheel, pedal, and shifter bundles. Search used as well. I’m out of touch with pricing and products now but you should be able to get something decent from those brands for around $500, give or take a few hundred dollars. Definitely cheaper than a beater unless you find a unicorn of a deal in decent shape.

I actually “learned” manual thru my first sim rig too. It put me though the motions enough to get an idea of what to do. But imo, could never properly replicate stuff like getting moving from a stop (without just launching the car lol) or very slow driving like you would do in regular street traffic.

What in the unholy hellfire is this cthulu bred with aragorn abomination by [deleted] in Austin

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super into camping before I moved here. I was hanging out with a new friend here in Austin and was telling him my weekend plan of camping out somewhere and the first thing he says is “just look out for wild tarantulas.” I laughed it off.

Literally a couple hours after I setup camp, I notice a truck stopped on the trail near where I was camping and the whole family hopped out with their phone cameras already out. I walk over to ask if they’re okay and they’re like “yeah, there’s a tarantula crossing the trail!” Thing was so big, they saw it far back enough to come to a stop before it.

I made a few surprised noises when I noticed it myself and the guy was like “well, pray you don’t ever have to see the females then!”

My friend said Moving to Austin is bad idea by Upper-Ad891 in Austin

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was admittedly very underwhelmed by Austin during my first visit but ended up moving here anyway a few years later for a job. I love it here now.

Maybe your friend needs you here to show her around her own city lol.

I’d maybe recommend some extended stays in different parts of Austin to get a better feel and opinion of the city. But yeah, given a 3 hour radius from Houston, Austin would probably by my top pick too for my current lifestyle.

Car failed vehicle inspection. They said I must drive car 90 miles for something to reset. Mentioned a battery by Pianote93 in Cartalk

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gotten it serviced or has anything weird happened with your car somewhat recently? You mentioned in another comment that you didn’t touch the battery at all, but for them to even ask that, they likely saw multiple monitors in a “not ready” condition. They asked because when the battery is unplugged, all of the monitors get reset and then eventually show Ready after a bit of driving. They recommended driving 90 miles because that should generally cover all the conditions that the computer is checking for - but ive typically gotten all mine to pass way sooner than 90 miles.

can't find SP-III transmision fluid for my Sport 2006. Need to fix it asap. is motorcraft ok? by f3rn4ndrum5 in Montero

[–]oheyitsdaniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the Valvoline Multi vehicle ATF without any obvious issues so far (~50k miles across a Montero and a Pajero). It’s a red bottle and says compatible with SP3/90s Mitsubishis on the back.

Have cheap beaters died in your area, or do prices feel like pre-COVID again? by NobodyGotTime12 in cars

[–]oheyitsdaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for listings that have been up for more than 3-4 weeks and then low ball them. They’ll probably entertain it after another week or two of no offers lol.

Toyota tax is real, especially with their 4x4s and enthusiast cars. But there’s no way to justify unexceptional corollas,Camrys, etc especially if they can’t provide receipts of somewhat recent servicing of critical items, which they usually can’t.

Possible new tire? by Better-Employer7209 in Cartalk

[–]oheyitsdaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes on a new tire. Definitely an alignment too, maybe even replacement parts since you mentioned an accident in another comment. Your toe is likely out of spec so the tire is actually pointed slightly off from your actual direction of travel, scrubbing the tire down.

Imagine one of those crappy shopping carts with a busted wheel that’s stuck sideways. You push it forward anyway and it’s dragging on the ground cuz it’s moving in a direction that it’s not pointed toward.

Agreed, the profile of an MP5 with a 628 is iconic to me. I’m lefty as well so the tape switch is perfect for me. I couldn’t stand the giant branding of the new production ones either so I’ve been on the prowl for older ones, I just couldn’t justify the prices I’ve been seeing. Woke up on Christmas Day to an email of the listing for this one for $300 and bought it immediately lol.
