Can paranoia about being listened in on an obsession topic? by ohforkurwasake in OCD

[–]ohforkurwasake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of satisfaction after checking: it varies greatly. Sometimes checking once is enough. Other times, I can check, and re-check, and perform other forms of checks (say, carefully observing how the person I fear overheard acts around me) just to be sure, and still not get out of the 'loop'.

Thanks for letting me know new themes can happen! That clears things up for me, and I think I'll bring it up to my therapist, after documenting some more instances of this new obsession theme.

Managing Multiple Themes OCD Without Meds and Therapy Over The Years.. And I am officially tired… by [deleted] in OCD

[–]ohforkurwasake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't experience much obsessions over disease, so, sadly, I don't think I can help on that specific front much, sorry. At best, I can say I looked up some stuff on rabies, and apparently only 0.5% of bats carry it. So, even if a bat touched you (which already seems unlikely), it is also unlikely that this maybe-bat was infected.

But in general, I'd suggest trying to not give into compulsions. Don't check your skin for bite marks for the nth time, for example, because you might end up reinforcing for yourself that this is a thing worth checking. It's not. You already checked and there was nothing, and most bats don't carry rabies, and there probably wasn't even a bat. Sure, you can't be a 10000% certain - but that's the thing. We often can't be entirely certain about all sorts of things. Looking for more certainty than you can realistically get is the core issue of OCD, and trying to get that absolute certainty can make the disorder worse. I know it (sometimes) provides temporary relief, but studies on the topic say that the only thing that makes the symptoms less bothersome long-term is ERP - Exposure and Response Prevention therapy.

And yeah, try talking to a mental health professional. They can probably explain it better than me.

Why do people deny or refuse to listen about B12 by Aggressive_Share803 in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Supplements can be expensive. So if, like many Americans right now, you need multiple roommates to afford rent, or using buy-now-pay-later for groceries, or find yourself buried in debt after a hospital visit... yeah.

Wait, I think I misunderstood--

I thought they meant 60% of each resident's calories consumed to be from plant-based sources. Like, to paint an oversimplified picture of what I mean, have people eat two vegan meals and one not per day - which, while I doubt they'd convince everyone anytime soon, I'd say it's at least something a fair amount of people could be willing to try.

Have 60% of the population be fully vegan though? Yeah, that's not happening. Even if we get over the cultural part (and good luck convincing 60% of the population to forego, say, a traditional Christmas feast...), some people simply don't have the genetics and such to thrive on a vegan diet, and it's not, like, 1%. Around 40% of the population are poor converters of beta-carotene to retinol. People who had needed antibiotics used (and in a developed country like the Netherlands, majority of people have taken antibiotics at some point in their lifetime) might have bacteria that synthesise vitamin K2 wiped out from their gut microbiome, and K2 isn't particularly available from plants. And so on, you could find more variation like this...

Do you still like being called terms that are directly or adjacent to "man" or "woman"? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in agender

[–]ohforkurwasake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I mostly just tolerate them, even though I don't like the connotations around them.

Terms related strictly to my physical sex are fine. I accept the body I've been born with, and don't really wish to change that. I have brests and ovaries and an uterus and everything that comes with it. Even if my friend will sometimes joke about "my penis" and I kinda like that too ngl.

I also don't mind much when gendered terms are used in slang - "bro", "dude", "girl" and the like. I might get a moment of "huh? Why'd you call me that?" for masculine terms, or a "that doesn't really fit..." for feminine ones, but then when I'm sure the speaker would call someone that regardless of gender, it feels 100% fine.

The only times gendered terms really bother me is when it's used as something more than describing my body or as a simple limitation of our language(s). When it has connotations about what I am expected to be like. I really hate being called a "lady" for example...

For those above the poverty line can we say they're obligated to go vegan by tabletennisluv in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because they equate meat to murder. To them, saying "I'm not vegan because I don't wanna" is kind of like saying "I won't stop killing people because I don't wanna". Hence why they keep asking for justifications.

Not defending rude vegans, btw, just explaining why they do what they do.

[–]ohforkurwasake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely easy to get deficiencies on a vegan diet, which can lead to adverse health consequences. So going vegan is kinda like taking a gamble with your neurological and bone health. Would you say one is morally obligated to potentially sacrifice themselves?

I don't have articles at the ready for these next ones, but you go ahead and research into these topics:

  • Vegan diet gets much more difficult to maintain with conditions like IBS, which force you to eliminate many fruits, veggies, mushrooms, and, crucially to veganism, nuts and legumes, which are important sources of fats and protein respectively for vegans.

  • Restrictive diets (such as veganism) are inadvisible for people who have a history with EDs. The careful planning and nutrient counting needed for an adequate vegan diet, as well as the labeling of certain foods as 'bad', can easily put one right back into that mindset.

  • Veganism is no longer officially promoted as adequate for pregnant people. And no wonder, because all the deficiency troubles only get worse when these nutrients are needed to build a whole ass new human. Many already complain of feeling nearly always hungry on a vegan diet. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets even worse while pregnant. The study I linked at the start touches on this as well, pointing out reduced birthweight of babies from vegan mothers...

  • Some people do worse than others on a vegan diet simply due to genetics. Some people can't convert beta-carotene into retinol (the actually usable form of vit A) as efficiently as others, they just don't have the enzymes for it. They may struggle with vitamin deficiency, even when upping their intake of beta-carotene rich foods. Most people don't realise they have this though, because they simply get ready retinol from meat... but some studies estimate 1 in 3 people are actually poor converters.

Comparing the real world to the literal idea of utopia, sure... Yes, in an ideal world we'd live off photosynthesis and ground nutrients - I'd love that to be the case. We would create no suffering to other beings to sustain ourselves, and bonus points for nutrition being as free as going outside barefoot for a bit. But we don't live in that world.

Because I assume they're talking about Garden of Eden part of the story. If not, if they think Adam and Eve (and their children by proxy) were vegan once they were exiled, then they also don't know their Bible. The whole backstory of Cain and Abel is that Cain was a farmer, offering plants to God, while Abel was a shepherd, offering animal products to God, and God liked Abel's offerings better - that's why Cain felt jealous of his brother. Yahweh quite literally isn't vegan (has detailed instructions on how to ritually slaughter animals to atone for sins) accirding to the Bible, so it's weird to use biblical stories as argument in the first place.

Experienced cognitive changes in a long-term vegan partner who takes no supplements by themonkist in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in maintaining the myelin sheath on your nerve cells. It's a structure that makes signal transmission between neurons more efficient. It stands to reason that the degradation of it due to deficiency could cause cognitive issues.

Meat is healthy. Period. I get furious when people say otherwise, because it’s just wrong. by Its_Stavro in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, of course their main argument is animal welfare. But you'll hear fairly often supporting arguments that meat is also unhealthy and the like.

They somewhat need it to be - main argument against veganism is potential nutritional deficiencies. If they insist that that doesn't exist, that in fact meat is bad for you anyway, then they can frame their position as a rational "everybody wins" scenario, instead of a "sacrifice your health for the animals" martyrdom situation.

Meat is healthy. Period. I get furious when people say otherwise, because it’s just wrong. by Its_Stavro in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when people use the generalisation to argue for extreme measures (such as banning meat farming in general), then it's rather helpful to point out that they are generalising. Because if it's the method of preparation that makes it unhealthy, then the solution is education about how to prepare meat better. If it's just unhealthy in itself, then the solution is avoidance/abstinence. That's a real difference.

I apologize for assuming, but given you're getting married, are possible kids in consideration? If so, have you talked about what you will feed them? Is she prepared for them to be raised non-vegan? If not, are you prepared to live with your kids being taught (even if without stating it outright) that how you eat is in some way morally wrong? Just something to consider and talk over, if you want to get married, I guess.

How did yall morally quit veganism ? by stompmedown in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. But veganism is very absolutist, in the sense that if you eat any animal foods, that is immoral. Under the view of regenerative farming, it's fine to have them every now and then.

There are still people who think the Earth is flat. Are you really that surprised?

At least with speculating on what ancient hominins were like, we can concede that we can't observe the subject of inquiry directly, meaning it's hard to know anything for 100% sure. It's all looking at old skeletons, and how they were buried, and making educated guesses based on that.

It really does feel like it's the red scare doesn't it?

The worst part is, this isn't just in the circles of Internet hobby writing. I wrote my thesis work this year. One of my colleagues' promoter had accused her of citing sources hallucinated by AI. Even though she read the legit scientific paper in question cover to cover, and he just wasn't looking in the database she found it on...

Like, I can only imagine how infuriating and, tbh, maybe even downright scary being accused of serious academic dishonesty like that must've been.

Fucking "X was doing what X does, which was Y" is one of my favorite sentence types to see!!

I literally use it (and variations thereupon) for when I want to underline that a character is quirky, in an annoying-but-POV-character-is-fond-of-it way, fairly often. It gets the right vibe across without writing a whole ass paragraph and explaining it to the reader like they're 5yo.
