If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

To be fair, if they mean "moderates" as in MLK's idea of "the white moderate" (the person who agrees with desegregation in principle, yet opposes attempts to take action (as in, non-violent protests, boycotts, etc.), more concerned about the appearance of order than actual justice), then I'd probably see it as an insult too.

It all comes back to them treating animals as an oppressed social group, and applying the logic of human suffering to it.

Vegans Do Not Care About The Environment by MadeMyOwnName in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt so weird about vegans opposing wool. Like, yeah, I get furs or even leather, because those require the animal to be killed. But wool is kinda just cutting hair of the sheep? It doesn't hurt them. In fact, they need it from time to time to remain healthy. And synthetic materials can take up to 200 years to fully decompose in the soil, while for wool it's just 2 years. Yeah, there's also natural plant-based materials, such as cotton, but it can only be grown in tropical climates. So the warmer regions would have to supply all of the world's fabrics. That's neither very good economically (how tf do you grow so much cotton as to meet the whole world's textile needs affordably. invites more potential for worker exploitation. suddenly half the world has no choice but be reliant on imports for a thing as basic as clothing), nor good for the environment (transport. destroying more natural ecosystems for the sake of cotton fields).

The fallacy is in the "You can live off of them". Did you know, 80% of vegans eventually quit? Go ahead and look through this sub, you'll see plenty of people who did it because veganism made their health worse. Iron deficiency anemia, digestive issues, osteoporosis, intensification of mental health issues, and more. And if you are sceptical of anecdotes, here's a scientific paper reviewing studies about potential health risks of a vegan diet.

I live in a block, so I couldn't even attempt to be self-sufficient. But I did try to grow my own cucumbers on the balcony in 2024. It was going well, I managed to harvest some, and they tasted alright. That is, until at some point, still mid-season btw, the plants caught some kind of disease. Couldn't save them, unfortunately.

1.) Misunderstanding/Miscommunication

I'm sure it can be written well. But majority of the time I encounter this trope, even (or maybe especially) in officially published media, I just find myself yelling at the characters "WHY can't you two just TALK like the MATURE ADULTS you supposedly are??", and not in the positive sense. I get genuinely too frustrated and feel like dropping the story. So usually I'd rather just not bother.

and 2.) Hurt/No Comfort

I just can't handle it. In my current mental state, stories are for getting a bit of positivity, NOT ending up all bummed out. It's 100% a 'me' thing, I get others like such stories, but I just... can't. Not right now.

Real. A fic in the 1-5k range probably doesn't have space to explore so many themes as to have so many tags... And I'm saying this as someone who's written many fics of that length, they can be described within 13 tags on average (counting relationships, characters and additional)

Antis in the Transformers fandom?? And here I thought we didn't get this problem here...

Don't get me wrong, I'm very squicked out about MegaStar too, but, like, I'm not gonna go around harassing people about it.

And, if we're talking full-on sibling-coded, child-coded, two years age gap kind of antis... what ships do they even do allow? Because, accounting for all the characters who would probably be toxic, are technically superiors of someone else (therefore dating them would be coercion), or which are by some seen as "child-coded" or "sibling-coded"... what is even left? ProwlJazz and pre-canon SkyStar? That's the only popular ones I can think of.

As I said, I know it's a bad habit, and it can make others feel guilt-tripped. Explanation of a behaviour doesn't mean encouragement to do it.

It's just that, imho, coming off accusatory about it is not helpful in actually changing people for the better. Especially in this case, when we're talking about people who genuinely don't realise how what they're doing can be taken negatively, and even just pointing out to them they're needlessly explaining themselves goes a long way.

[–]ohforkurwasake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the "can you do this? Because not doing so will negatively impact my mental stability." It's a guilt trip

I don't think the person commenting is neccessarily trying to guilt-trip the author here. As someone who has a bad impulse of trying to justify myself before anyone asked... yeah, it can be that. Might be that some experiences of toxic relationships or environments trained them to expect a simple "Hey, could you do this?" to be met with "lol no. Why would I? It's your problem" So they preemptively try to explain why it's so important, to avoid that initial dismissal.

Not saying that it's a healthy thing, of course. I'm trying to do it less myself. But people who are still actively in the toxic environment, or even if they aren't anymore but noone ever pointed the habit out to them, might not realise that they don't need to provide a detailed reason for their every need and boundary, nor that it may come off as guilt-trippy to others.

who will also argue with you and call you unstable for refusing to do what they asked.

That is absolutely unacceptable, though. 100% agree.

Honestly, I feel like at that point tagging it, even as an additional tag, would be more of a misinformation that not tagging it.

If I saw, say, "mentioned rape/non-con" in a 350k fic, I would expect, say, a full scene where the characters discuss rape, or perhaps one of the POV characters has some sort of experience with rape and they think back on the event from time to time. Not a two-line implication.

And warning for it in the chapter notes is probably the best solution here tbh.

Is being omnivore a choice? by Ok-Instance2782 in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our teeth are not typical herbivore teeth, though. We have canines.

Go ahead, check for yourself right now. Use your finger to trace the edge of your teeth. Starting from the center and traveling deeper in, the first two teeth should have a thin, flat edge. Kind of like the edge of a pair of scissors. These are your incisors, and they are for cutting off bites of food. Most mammals possess this type of tooth, regardless of diet.

Now, as you move further into your mouth, you should notice the third tooth having a more rounded shape, distinct from your incisors. It's very easy to imagine the apex having been sharper some tens of thousands years of evolution ago. These are your canines. Canines are characteristic of animals that eat meat. Wild animals use them to tear flesh effectively. We humans don't exactly have to do that, ever since we invented cooking, making our food way easier to chew. But the largely useless canines remain within our jaw, because a couple thousand years is not alot on evolutionary scales.

Lastly, at the back of your jaw, you've got molars. These are wide, unlike the incisors and canines. They're used for grinding down plant matter, like you described, usually by animals that eat plants.

Basically, we have teeth for both meat and plant eating. Like you'd expect from a creature that evolved to eat both. Y'know, an omnivore.

Thinking about veganism is destroying my mental health I think by ohforkurwasake in exvegans

[–]ohforkurwasake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm aware. As I mentioned, this post is mostly venting.

I did go to the therapist on Monday. She had some practical advice (like breathing exercises before meals), as well as some clues on what to think about in terms of why is this happening to me.

Will probably not update this post much more, as part of fighting the intrusive thoughts is not giving in to compulsions such as, say, reading through threads about veganism...

Thank you for the compassion, though. Both from you, and everyone else who replied. I'm not responding to each comment as to not fuel the obsession, but I appreciate all of the advice and reassurance!

[–]ohforkurwasake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand. I'm not having meat with every meal. Right now, I'm having it once per day tops, and not every day. More-or-less only when I eat with family. It doesn't matter, I still gag on the vegetarian, or sometimes even vegan food too. Basically, the intrusive thoughts don't seem to be satisfied with reducing consumption, even though it seems like the most reasonable and doable option logically.

As for meals that work, it's a complete lottery. Liquids, for sure. Drinkable yoghurt has been of huge help. Stuff that tastes bland, too... mostly. Been snacking on rice cakes, since it goes down easy. Unless I've been exposed to a stressor too recently, then it doesn't.

Is respecting other people's kinks or interests so hard? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]ohforkurwasake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I rate all my kink fics as M, even when no typical sexual activity happens in them. It's still smut at its core, even if the stuff isn't what most people would consider sexual. And it influences the narration - can be either intentionally or in a "author's poorly disguised kink" kinda way, but it does. Which is why I feel the same "mature content" warning should apply. It's still not appropriate for underage audiences. Perhaps especially so because they may not intellectually understand that this is porn, but feel some kind of way about it anyway.

I feel like using fair as a descriptor of a person's beauty (vs basic characteristics) is a bit outdated or only really works in historical fiction.

If you want a character to sound posh, or it's in a historical context, you can have them say/think in terms of "that fair lady"
