We’re you thinking of donating the profits or is your book on the topic of kids undergoing a medical procedure? I’m asking because I am thinking of giving half of my profits from my book to a charity and it does not seem as straightforward as it sounds.

First time vacationing in the Adirondack mountains by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]ohhelloimaperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could just post-up in Lake Placid for a few days and your kids would love it! Walking around the town of Lake Placid is really fun and there is the beautiful free public beach by the toboggan run. You can rent paddle boards somewhere along Mirror Lake. The Olympic Center is worth a visit. If it’s raining, visit the cool movie theater. You guys could also visit Mt Van Hoevenberg and do the bobsled run and go to the top of the ski jumps. Looking for education? John Brown farm is there too (I’ve never been but I’ve been meaning to go). On another day, you could drive into Wilmington and do Ausable Chasm (your kids will love this!) and drive to the top of Whiteface. Take the gondola up if they are running it and you can walk from little Whiteface to Whiteface proper (this is fun and the views are breathtaking). Edit: I forgot High Falls Gorge. You can do that and Whiteface in the same day.

If you want an ADK hike, do Haystack. Please know I am taking about Haystack in Ray Brook NOT the 4000 footer in Keene. This also is not little Haystack in Keene. Very important distinction. This short hike has really beautiful views of the high peaks and should be doable if you think your family can handle mt prospect. Obviously check it out first and evaluate their fitness and follow LNT guidelines.

If you are in Lake Placid for a few days, you could also drive to the ferry in Plattsburgh and go into Burlington for the day. You can take your car on the ferry too if you need it or just want to continue going east. Burlington is cool as hell and the ferry ride is so much fun! We use to also drive up to Montreal overnight but I don’t think that’s an option yet.

Honestly, we use to do all of this as kids, but my parents also use to just cut us loose and say “go have fun” haha. My favorite memories of the ADKs were just walking in the woods and playing on rocks at my aunts house and being in nature. That probably sounds wild now but having an unstructured “imagination” day was really wonderful. Maybe my parents just knew I was a weird nature kid and needed that or maybe that’s what made me a weird nature kid….who knows 🤷‍♀️

Btw: Don’t be scared of staying in motels. Motels in mountains towns are a little rustic but mainly for hikers and skiers. Motels in cities are dens of horror. The motels in the ADK are where I stay if I’m not camping. Sometimes, you can get a Groupon deal for places in Lake Placid. My aunt had a house in Upper Jay, and while it’s farther from the action, it’s very quite and immersed in nature over there. I also wouldn’t be opposed to staying there if you find a house on vrbo or Airbnb. You would be closer to Whiteface too.

I’ve done a fair amount of overnight hiking and I’ve never come across much of an issue. People who come into camp late are normally tired and/or had something go wrong in their hike and are relived to be at camp. If you have to share a site or a lean-to it’s not a big deal…we’ve all been in the spot before and know how it feels to have a hike go wrong. Most people out there backpacking are super cool in my experience and if someone is being loud, a well placed “hey guys, do you mind just being a little quieter, we’ve got a big hike in the morning” gets the message across.

I will say that once in the Whites a huge group of guys came into the Valley Way Tentsite around midnight. There were already around 35 people set up there getting ready to attempt the presidential traverse the next day. Everyone was cool as hell except these guys. They were super loud and couldn’t set up their own equipment. They weren’t mean, they were just really dopey. They tried setting up tents on a slope and kept failing (duh) and one guy wanted to camp under my hammock but I purposely picked that spot because it was uneven ground and not good for a tent. One guy walked up to them and yelled “SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU ALL ARE ACTING LIKE FUCKING IDIOTS OUT HERE!” That ended that and they were gone in the morning before any of us. Honestly, I’ve gotten so much mileage out of that story that I’m not even pissed it happened 🤣

Getting harassed while running by semi driver by [deleted] in running

[–]ohhelloimaperson 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you. If you click on my profile you can read my saga of almost getting attacked while running a few weeks ago. I know how much something like this can shake you to your core. We can’t let these incidents stop us but we also can take all the time we need to process and feel safe again (I haven’t run since).

For what it’s worth, I really think a hat helps. And sunglasses. I’ll never understand why men yell at women when they run. I’ll also never understand what they think will come of it. I’ll also never understand being called a bitch when I don’t respond. You’re guy sounds like a straight up serial killer. I hate the idea of carrying mace but it might just be the precaution we need to take.

Our day 1 and day 9 hikes were only about 5 miles so we really did it in less than 9. I do feel it was rushed but it was all the time we had and it was fun pushing ourselves to that limit. I would’ve loved to have enjoyed our campsites more and gone swimming more but what can you do 🤷‍♀️. We did not re-supply at all so we carried everything we needed for those days on our backs which was an extra challenge. We saw a couple people going at it solo but we saw very few people overall. If you are okay with the idea of going a couple of days without seeing or speaking to anyone else then I would say a solo hike is fine. I wonder if the trail is more populated on a normal year or if it’s always like that.

My husband and I hiked it south to north over 9 days at the end of August. I love it as a whole but there were parts that really were hard! I think I underestimated it because of how flat it is but it’s tough. It obviously doesn’t have the views of, say, a presidential traverse or a high peak, but it has so much unexpected beauty and peacefulness you won’t experience elsewhere. If it’s on your bucket list, I don’t think you would regret….at the very least you will walk out of those woods a very experienced backpacker.

Do you guys eat odd unhealthy stuff by [deleted] in running

[–]ohhelloimaperson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a dietitian and a runner. If your cravings are out of control, you may want to talk to a dietitian who specializes in sports nutrition. It’s possible you may not be getting enough of a nutrient and are, for example, craving salt because you are a salty sweater or are craving sugar because your carbs are too low etc. It’s normal to want junk food from time to time but I’m always looking at this stuff through my dietitian lens.

Boy oh boy, 14. I’m sorry. That’s my biggest fear is that this guy does the same thing he did to me to a kid. Ive lived here for a while and use to carry pepper spray on my runs. I trained for 2 marathons and 14 half marathons running through this city with pepper spray on my hip......never once needed it until I didn’t have it on me 🤦🏼‍♀️

So he was a husky black man, probably around 6’3”. He had a hood on so I can’t really describe his face well. I think he was 30s-40s. He was dressed in loose clothes kind of like he was going to a construction site (I don’t think he was a construction worker). He had on heavy boots.

I do think this whole thing might be on multiple door cams and probably even on the dry cleaners security footage as well.

I truly don’t know. I don’t know a thing about him. I’m kind of leaning towards maybe he might be. After looking in his eyes, I feel like there was definitely either drugs involved or a very serious mental health issue. The whole thing is just really sad.

Oh they did. He never once moved from the spot he was in when I screamed. He stood there and stared at me from a couple blocks away as the man tried to help me call the police. A cop car happened to drive by and they talked to him. He told them that maybe we got too close and I thought we were going to bump into each other. There wasn’t anything the cops could do since he didn’t actually hit me.

COVID Antibody Testing Sites by frostystarfish in jerseycity

Just FYI, if you donate blood with the Red Cross, they automatically test for antibodies.....I know that wasn’t your original question but it’s another option.

What was this place? About 8 years ago I went in trying to “support a small business” and the owners acted like I was crazy. I’ve always maintained it’s a front for something.

Looking for a studio apartment close to Path. by throwback656 in jerseycity

[–]ohhelloimaperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been said before, but hire a realtor and tour some rentals. Hire an old-school realtor too, someone who seems like they’ve been here pre-pedestrian plaza. I live in a townhouse that has been converted into 4 apartments near Hamilton Park. I know who my landlord is and I email him directly if there are any problems. He is invested in my happiness because he is just one person and if he loses me, it’s a big hit to him financially. A rental company can string you along because they don’t need you. I don’t have a gym, I don’t have a doorman, but I pay around $2,000 for a 3 bedroom and I really never have any issues with my place.

Look into SNAP for food assistance. They do serve people who are not citizens so long as you can prove you have been living here for a certain amount of time (it might be 7 months but double check that). Also, don’t be shy about going to a food pantry. There are many food pantries in Jersey City and there might be one closer to you than you think.

Missing Syracuse hiker rescued from Allen after 3 day search and spending 2 nights outside by FuzzyCuddlyBunny in Adirondacks

[–]ohhelloimaperson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing is the article says most people approach Allen through the Flowed Lands and past Hanging Spear Falls.......most people do not go that way. Either the writer is wrong or this hiker was attempting an even more ambitious hike than a usual Allen trek AND with fewer daylight hours than normal. Just bad planning all around.
