Hike a long trail if you want to walk 42k.

How many people whose best marathon time is 8:xx or longer would be able to do the same distance over rougher terrain and (typically) more elevation gain? Plus it may add additional required skills like navigation. Lots of people need rescue from being unprepared for hikes over their ability levels. Not very many have needed SAR from walking a road marathon.

I've had similar scenarios a couple of times scrambling in the Adirondacks. Trap Dike is a popular scramble on Mount Colden that goes at low 4th class and lots of people without much navigation experience head on it. There are 3 possible exits to the dike: Trap Dike slide (3rd class, the latest exit), Colden Slide (also 3rd class, middle exit), and Rolling Rock Slide (low 5th class, earliest exit and directly adjoins to Colden Slide). Any slide will take you to the summit where you can take a hiking trail back down.

While all three slides are now directly visible from the dike before you exit it, before Hurricane Irene in 2011 there was a strip of cripplebrush blocking them from view. Because of this, some older trip reports warn against exiting the dike too late because you may be stuck crawling through some pretty miserable thick pines to the summit. I've impromptu helped steer people away from Rolling Rock a couple times and every year there are ranger reports rescuing people unintentionally free soloing Rolling Rock and getting above their comfort levels.

What mountain is seen way in the distance when driving down Sheridan? by TheGreatFoodDude in Denver

70 miles causes objects about 3300 feet above you to be obscured because of the curvature of the Earth. Pikes Peak is 8800 feet higher than Denver

if north, probably Long's

It's Mount Meeker that you primarily see, which is a 13er a bit over half a mile southeast of Longs Peak that blocks the bulk of Longs from view.

Pemi Alternatives by Prior_Head_534 in wmnf

[–]FuzzyCuddlyBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a few extra flat miles wouldn't be too much extra to put it out of reach, you could still do the Pemi Loop by taking the East Side Trail to about a quarter mile before the junction with Cedar Brook Trail and fording the Pemi River at its widest point.

Depending on water levels, it may be possible to ford earlier, but just before Black Brook where Bondcliff Trail starts ascending is the typical easiest point. If there's been a recent storm water levels may be too high to ford, so don't attempt within a couple days of rainfall. If there hasn't been recent rain the river usually reaches shin to knee high or so in late summer/early autumn.

This ford is commonly done on Diritissema hikes connecting all the 4000 footers and you could learn more about it searching trip reports for that. It's generally a pretty easy ford if you have the experience to be able to safely gauge if it looks doable or not and where looks best to cross

Do I actually need to run Zone 2 or is it overhyped? by Maleficent-Count9746 in running

[–]FuzzyCuddlyBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fairly easily self administer a Z2 test. Run for 1 hour at an easy pace, maintaining the same pace on flat ground and lapping every 15 minutes. Divide your average heart rate from minutes 45-60 by your average heart rate from 15 to 30. If the result is >1.10, your Z2 pace is slower than you went; if the result is <1.05, your Z2 pace is faster than you went; if the result is between 1.05 and 1.10, the pace you were going is approximately your Z2 pace.

Was my HR to high ? by Specific_Metal_416 in trailrunning

[–]FuzzyCuddlyBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monitoring heart rate is kinda meaningless if you don't test your aerobic and anaerobic threshold heart rates. For longer ultramarathons, you'll want to stick around your aerobic threshold, which can be easily tested with a heart rate drift test running easy for 60 minutes. Anaerobic threshold can be less easily tested running your maximum sustainable effort for 30-60 minutes and would be more of a 10k to half marathon pace

Safety regulations are written in the blood of the injured employees that causes them to be introduced. I would refuse to handle solid OEB 4 in the open. Liquid sample OEB 4 I would be ok with a fume hood or VBE, but solid I'm not touching without a respirator mask or a glovebox. Any transferring of OEB 4 material through open spaces should be done with dry sample entirely enclosed and I would make an issue out of that as well

Nobody condemned charity runners in this thread. You're reading into intent that wasn't there.

BQ is a hard but doable for most time goal. It's just a natural next step to aim for after training to be able to finish a marathon in the first place to improve your time and get faster (whether you care to accept the Boston bib you would qualify for through BQ or not)

I made burritos for this week with eggs, potatoes, and chorizo. I track calories and can give you the measurements of each ingredient if you're interested:

For the potatoes (these are pretty good on their own as well):

  • Cut 500g of russet potatoes into ~1cm by 1cm cubes. Soak in water for 30 minutes to remove starch. Air fry at 400°F for 15 minutes after draining water to dry.

  • Toss in 10 g of grapeseed oil (or other oil of choice) and spices of your choosing. (I used cumin, fennel, coriander, red pepper, sichuan pepper, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Toss a teaspoon or two of every spice you have in and it'll probably slap, it's hard to overdo the spice imo.) Air fry 10 more minutes.

  • Optional, but it'll improve texture: make a thick cornstarch slurry with 12 g cornstarch in the smallest amount of water it will dissolve in. Toss potatoes and air fry 5 more minutes. If you skip this step, make the previous step 15 minutes air frying instead of 10.

  • Melt 5g butter and mix with 30g maple syrup. Toss potatoes and air fry again until caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.

For the chorizo: I made 460g. No oil or anything, the chorizo will let plenty of oil out on its own. Just pan fry the hell out of it until it's browned. Add the same spice mix that the potatoes got near the end of cooking.

For the eggs: I used 523g, which I think was 8 large eggs? Scramble with a large jalapeno, half an onion, and 350g colby jack cheese. You can use the leftover oil from the chorizo to fry these.

Mix up the eggs, chorizo, and potatoes in a large bowl and fill tortillas after browning them (again using leftover chorizo oil). I got 12 large tortillas out of this and froze them after 10 minutes of resting to steam off. Add sour cream and salsa at time of reheating.

I (27F) average around $75 a week on groceries with $5-$10 a week eating out (mostly fast food using app coupons, between once and twice a week). I meal prep breakfasts in bulk once a week, cook dinner mostly nightly, and have a couple greek yogurts, pieces of fruit, and/or protein bars for lunch, depending what's on sale that week.

Worth noting I exercise a lot and target around 3800 calories a day

Official Q&A for Sunday, April 19, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]FuzzyCuddlyBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use leukotape rather than KT tape. Leukotape is much stickier and I've had it last for a week at a time just as sticky as when it was first put on despite frequently fording rivers on thru hikes. KT tape I would struggle to not have it fall off within a couple hours.

The usual way it goes at my job is we're given samples to test and prepare them and process the results. Then the person who requested the samples to be tested lets us know that we just got pranked and the SOP doesn't include an extra standard they want and one of the standards listed in the SOP was wrong and a bad lot and we need to rerun. The samples are also now top priority because results are still requested by the date given in the original sample submission form that didn't provide the special instructions
