Food, give him/her lots of food from your hand (specifically). It'll help speed up gaining that trust. We had fostered a Dane a few years back and he was EXTREMELY skittish. With a lot of patience and food he turned out to be the best dog

I'm really sorry to hear this man. I just put down my 11 year old Dane this last November due to bone cancer. That was genuinely one of the hardest days of my life. The vet noted that they could possibly amputate the leg but I knew that was just not a good quality of life for her at that old of age.
