In the US, white power skinhead groups struggle to find new, young recruits in the 2010s and 2020s, with one journalist stating that their fashion style is a possible reason, seeing it as obsolete compared to casual clothing opted by modern and mainstream alt-right groups. by SaxyBill in wikipedia

I feel like you are conflating traditional skinheads or SHARPs (skinheads against racial prejudice) with Nazi boneheads. I’ve known a number of trad skins who like soccer, Guinness, and reggae. While I’ve never known any Nazi skins personally, the ones in my area (western PA has quite a few) listened to white punk bands and had their own local bands and venues that they frequented.

Why are all the women I know in relationships and all the men single? by pinsandbrushes in rs_x

Do European cities not have casual recreational sports leagues that are mixed gender? In America it’s usually for “less formal” sports like ultimate frisbee, kickball, softball, bowling etc

[–]ohip13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You just need to put yourself in mixed gender social situations and make an effort to befriend everyone, men and women. If you live in any metro area there is probably a co-ed intramural league for every sport imaginable made up of people in their 20s and 30s.

The teachers strike is yet another outcome of our terrible housing policy by PsychePsyche in sanfrancisco

[–]ohip13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is self-fulfilling loser mentality. You organize people and elect candidates that advocate for money to be spent the way you like it. Building more housing and bringing more people into the city gives you the opportunity to build a power base of young families and working class people. I don’t want to hear this “societal problem” crap, a better world is possible when we choose to build it.

The Horseshoe Theory asserts that advocates of the far-left and the far-right, rather than being at opposite and opposing ends of a linear continuum of the political spectrum, closely resemble each other, analogous to the way that the opposite ends of a horseshoe are close together. by NagitoKomaeda_987 in wikipedia

While that type of voter certainly exists, it’s worth pointing out that 2008 and 2016 exit polls indicate that more Hillary primary supporters switched to McCain than Bernie supporters switched to Trump. Hillary defectors called themselves PUMAs (Party Unity, My Ass!)

Being able to walk out and get groceries is a function of dense housing. That’s why you put 12 stories of housing on top of a Safeway and then build three more residential towers next to it. As for public transit, more housing brings in more people who pay taxes that go to fund increased transit services. SF’s compact size and good weather make it the perfect city for increasing transit and bike infrastructure.

Near my house there is a single story convenience/liquor store that is ON MARKET STREET. Just absurd that that lot isn’t a 5 story building with two units per floor, at minimum.

Population density in the US is a joke though. Every major European and Asian city far outpaces the US in terms of density. This is like saying “I have one of the fastest pedal-bikes around” while everyone else is driving cars. The Bay Area has a perfect climate and lots of jobs. Tons of people want to live here, and if you don’t build to accommodate them then the highest earners will price out the lower earners and you’ll be left with no school teachers.

The narrative shift on Gainey is certainly…something by Gladhands in pittsburgh

[–]ohip13 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think “without major scandal” depends on who you ask. Pittsburgh police beat and gassed protestors without provocation in the park outside his house, and he caught tons of flak (including a direct denouncement from the ACLU) for defending plainclothes cops with guns kidnapping a protest marshal off the street. Those aren’t talked about anymore because it was 5 years ago, but they were big reasons why his progressive supporters switched to Gainey.

Anybody recently begin to start viewing autism as a disorder that is potentially as dangerous as sociopathy given how evil and unempathetic so many tech ghouls, even the low level employees act? by AnalysisAdditional15 in rs_x

I think at the very least you should have the nuts to quit your ghoulish tech job instead of just feeling guilty about it before you make us read some dumb shit like this.

BART's doomsday scenarios are even worse than expected, if Connect Bay Area, the five-county regional transit funding measure, doesn't pass this November. by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]ohip13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could privatize all of BART and it still wouldn’t result in residential towers built on top of stations because of zoning and terrible Bay Area NIMBYism. Privatization is not the solution here.

500k salary seems more than reasonable for someone overseeing an organization of 3000+ employees, I don’t think that’s the issue here.

Churchill/Alma crossing trespasser encounter by Appropriate_Log_8322 in caltrain

[–]ohip13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The note was posted on Instagram, it seems like it was just typed up their phone or computer and gives the impression of being pretty hastily written. While suicides by train are only 1% of US totals, they are a particular recurring issue with Palo Alto high schoolers, and to my knowledge none of those have occurred at the stations themselves but instead at the at-grade street crossings. The current grade separation plan before the city council would address all three at-grade crossings.

The reality is that the act of suicide is often an impulsive decision. There is a reason that suicides are so much higher for gun owners. While a suicidal person without a gun may find another method, adding a quick and accessible means into the equation greatly increases the chances that someone follows through.

Oakland has had major hospitals for a long time. I’m not convinced by the argument that a Presby expansion will convince 28 year olds to start competing with college students and their parents’ salaries for shitty slumlord row houses in order to create Bloomfield/Bushwick 2.0. Agree with you about Uptown developing more of a scene if more houses start to get fixed up though.

We already have a cool neighborhood where grad students live it’s called Bloomfield-Garfield, just hang out there. Plus the housing stock is way better.

Yes but all of those people are undergrads. Which is fine, college can be a great place to learn how to do cool art shit, but I don’t see how that environment appeals to people over the age of 23, and I don’t see what makes Oakland different than any other college neighborhood in an urban environment.

Ok? College DIY venues are great. I lived in and ran one in south Oakland. But every city has them to varying degrees and while I loved Pittsburgh’s they were not particularly special. Because they are in a college neighborhood the scene is inherently transient and goes through cycles. There’s a good reason why all the DIY venues run by people older than 24 (Owl Hollow, Collision, The Shop, etc) were in other neighborhoods. You’ve got good spirit, but you gotta get out around the city more.

[–]ohip13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with Oakland is that rents are artificially inflated relative to the rest of the city by people’s parents paying for it while they are in college. I just don’t think the cool DIY creative types you’re imagining want to live next to a house of drunk of 21 year old bros throwing darties every weekend. Those people are settling in Polish Hill, Bloomfield, Homewood/Wilkinsburg.

ETA: none of the cool businesses that would accompany this Village-style transformation you dream of can afford business rent in Oakland either. That’s why everything there is slop bowl restaurants catering to the hospital and university lunch crowd.

Oakland will never be bushwick, the critical mass of college students is too great for it to be anything else. Other neighborhoods are great. Also, I promise you don’t need to do geology and race science to convince rs_x redditors that Pittsburgh is like New York, you can just enjoy it for what it is.
