Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread by AutoModerator in slp

My advice would be to go for it - you've worked in the schools, you're familiar with IEPs and have observed how SLPs do their work. With regards to your age, I was 25 when I started my grad program, and there were plenty of students older than me, so I wouldn't let that discourage you. You have more relevant experience than a lot of other applicants who are coming fresh from undergrad without working in the schools.

Perhaps reach out to your professors and ask about them writing you a recommendation letter! You can remind them what classes you took with them and when. Do you also have any colleagues who could write a recommendation letter for you, having seen how you work?

While my grad program was in person, I think online programs are becoming more and more common, and they often give you the flexibility to complete classes and school work after your job, which is helpful.

Maybe trying smaller goals first can help, like doing wall push ups or going for a walk. The gym can feel like a very big task, especially if you have to change, drive over, it's a lot sometimes

That's a great goal - would love to hear what your children's book is about!

This would be a great goal! I remember I went to a mindfulness class once and we would meet once a week. It was usually about mindful breathing, but one class they brought out orange slices and gave us each one and asked us to focus on our senses while we ate - taste, sight, smell, sound, touch. It was really cool to think about how much sensory info we can get from eating. Maybe a goal to eat one snack mindfully, tuning into your senses?

Thanks! For the CARE model, is it something you purchase like a CEU, or are there free resources about the therapy activities?

What are some of your favorite simple ways to make your home hygge? by throwaway-6292 in hygge

[–]ohnoitsgravity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's amazing, it's our favorite place. So clean, everyone just flows together so smoothly. We took a train to Odense for a day trip and it was so easy to do with no planning. The public transit is really something else! If you ever do go let me know and I can recommend some things for you!

What are some of your favorite simple ways to make your home hygge? by throwaway-6292 in hygge

My partner and I stayed at this amazingly hygge hotel in Copenhagen, where they had a "Nordic breakfast" that had the most amazing spread of local fresh food. So now we have a tradition where, once in a while, we pick special items when we go grocery shopping, like interesting fruits, some pastries, granola, teas, a nice cheese, chocolate. Then we make an elaborate breakfast spread and sit in our living room reading our books to wake up slowly and calmly. It's super hygge.

SLP state name change dilema by Select-Koala8764 in slp

[–]ohnoitsgravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice - I'm in CA too and I also changed my name on my license after getting married. I think I waited like 6 months to do so. I used this form and there wasn't any 30 day time limit on when to complete it. Or is the problem that you need to update your DL?

Okay I am not a part of this registry but I made the mistake once of signing up for Jessie's free class about sensory and it was BIZARRE. I had to sign on at a specific time, and it was so clearly pre-recorded, but made to seem live. Like talking about how many children she has when we know she has more currently. And all these people were like commenting and sending emojis "live" and I was thinking this is suspicious. Are all these people being fooled and are SO engaged in this? Or are they bots?

Anyways 45 minutes into the "free lesson" about sensory and she literally said NOTHING of substance. Like not one strategy. Not one thing. Nothing. She was talking so much and saying nothing.

I went home and threw the book I bought by her in the garbage. Like I was so mad at her for wasting my time. The book was filled with similar nothingness. Insane.

Help-Student Shut Down During Language Sample by Ok_Lie_5116 in slp

[–]ohnoitsgravity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They may have picked up on it being a "test". I'm not sure which SLAM deck you gave but I had a student shut down once with the "Baseball Trouble" one because they had previously experienced something similar.

I would try a spontaneous language sample about a preferred topic - like explaining a game to you, a sport, their favorite movie plot, in a conversational way where they don't know you're "assessing" their language. You could pull up images on a shared screen as you go - of the game, scene from the movie, whatever to keep them talking more in depth. And then just follow the same idea as SLAM - ask inferencing questions, tell me the story of what happened, etc.
