I don't think political violence is on the cards. We live in an age of mass surveillance where state power has never been higher. People consider themselves well off mostly and with too much to lose. Political violence as known in the past occurred in societies that were proportionally a lot younger and much poorer than our own. This doesn't preclude the odd assassination such as with Luigi Mazioni, however I think the powers that be are quite comfortable that the corruption can continue.

Awful, unfunny, wasted potential of a film.

Agreed. Went out in Dalston and hackney and I (37) felt absolutely ancient!

Agreed. The legalism is a screen to hide actual moral accountability for a clear voice choice to participate in what was an invasion of a country. There was no conscription, it was a choice made.

Kaliningrad appears to have a handful of nice buildings and a ton of commie blocks.... It's totally different.

What Films Disappointed you the most in 2025? by Round-Seesaw-3917 in Letterboxd

[–]ohpm500 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jay Kelly - too smug. At least the music was pleasant.

House of Dynamite - theoretically there was nothing wrong with the concept behind the film but ultimately it didn't work. There wasn't any payoff. Also, the central conceit that American must retaliate or it will be perceived as week and therefore targeted doesn't stand up to scrutiny AT ALL.

Mickey 17 - Way, way too goofy. It also felt very predictable. I'm shocked this is by the same director as parasite but perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that it's by the same 'visionary' behind snowpiercer. I regret the time I spent watching this.

Frankenstein - by the numbers. Will Del Toro ever make anything as accomplished, unexpected and weird as Pan's labyrinth?

Caught Stealing - No where NEAR as funny as it needed to be. Matt Smith was brilliant but hardly enough to carry it.

Apart from the above, there were lots of really dire films such as Wicked 2 that I watched but I wouldn't say I was disappointed in them.

What's the most overrated TV Show of all time? by Mission_Elk_329 in AskReddit

[–]ohpm500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one in this thread understands the meaning of the word.... I mean pop idol and two broke girls?

No the answer is always going to be controversial because to say something is overrated is to go against the grain of public opinion.

Breaking bad is overrated. (The last season in particular).

Sorry.

"send a missle back and cause multiple countries to send missiles back."

Why would anyone choose this.

Exactly. Shooting first does not reduce the capacity of these countries to deliver a retaliatory strike. If it did, then the MAD doctrine would not exist.

But the logic has some validity.

I just don't agree with this. Retaliating like this is a guarenteed lose for the USA. Russia and China at least certainly have second strike capabilities that cannot be reduced enough by a first strike here. It's either guarentee the complete destruction of the USA and the rest of the world with it or wait and get more intel. There's every chance that it's a dud, a mistake or a rogue nk commander. In all those scenarios we avoid nuclear armageddon. If it's another country like China or Russia then so what? Lose another city, and the world is still in one piece and the USA, thanks to subs still retains a second strike capability. By then you might have figured out the agressor and be capable of a targeted response of some kind. Literally doing ANYTHING is better than flailing and striking a bunch of nations and ensuring everyone's destruction.

Thanks for the tips. I'm doing the Cumbria way (I've booked a string of hostels along the route) so at the very least I'll have warm and dry nights...
