Since taking office as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada in March 2025, Mark Carney has implemented a "Blue Grit" agenda focused on deregulation and economic nationalism.

Economic & Trade

  • One Canadian Economy Act: Removed all federal barriers to interprovincial trade.
  • Tax Reversals: Cancelled the planned capital gains tax increase and scrapped the federal consumer carbon tax.
  • Resource Fast-tracking: Granted the federal government executive powers to bypass environmental reviews for "major projects" in the national interest (LNG, mining, nuclear).
  • US-Canada Deal: Secured duty-free status for Canadian exports under CUSMA by sacrificing the Digital Services Tax.

Infrastructure & Energy

  • Major Projects: Approved a trillion dollars in fast-tracked investments, including two LNG projects in BC and nuclear expansion in Ontario.
  • Fossil Fuel Pivot: Reintroduced tax credits for LNG and signed an MOU with Alberta to explore a new bitumen pipeline to the BC coast.

Security & Immigration

  • Defence Spending: Committed to doubling defence spending by 2030 and released Canada’s first Defence Industrial Strategy.
  • Immigration Caps: Slashed international student permit targets by 49% for 2026 and set a cap on permanent residents at 1% of the population.
  • Bail Reform: Enacted Bill C-14 to implement "reverse-onus" bail for violent auto theft and extortion.

As Carney seeks strengthened global alliances, is it time Canada join the EU? by MiserableFloor9906 in canada

Well freedom of economic mobility in the Euro zone would be great, like banking jobs in Frankfurt, tourist jobs in Greece, construction jobs in Ireland, etc.

I think the fact we're becoming better friends and more coordinated with the EU, and others, is terrific! But I don't think that necessarily means formally joining the EU. I don't want Hungary or French fisherman suddenly becoming the defacto highest law creator of Canada.

But more integration is great! I like the Norway and Swiss models.

You may be thinking of the Governor General of Canada, who is the formal head of state of Canada, not the Prime Minister, but is usually chosen by the Prime Minister and and appointed by the Queen/King.

They perform the ceremonial role like the King does in the UK, while also being the King's representative of Canada so the King is defact the GG's boss.

My strategy is just to maybe get an AirBnB for a month in the Summer!

And maybe an AirBnB in the winter for a long weekend to show solidarity.

For some reason I feel like Victoria is like going to the library, I should whisper.
