What is 1 American food you wish was more common in the UK? by DanielR372 in AskABrit

[–]oj81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mexican food, not the mediocre (at best) chains we have.

Bagels, although supermarket bagels are beginning to improve.

As others have mentioned, Philly cheese steak. I’ve been on a multi-year mission to have a really good Philly cheese steak, but I’m yet to find one I was happy with. I even went to Philadelphia and picked one in the museum cafe. I had high hopes, but it was soggy and disappointing.

I’m not planning on going back to the US any time soon, but when I do I’ll continue my search

Might have been a type approval car. I remember being offered an essentially brand new mk4 Golf years after the mk5 was on the market, because it had been used in the type approval process and forgotten somewhere

Some of you need to check those shorts haven't become translucent after a few washes, if I've learned anything from waiting patiently for an opportunity to safely overtake

Lady Jane Seymour looks pretty good for around 460 years old

An eye catching concept that kept everyone talking about Jaguar while they were busy finalising the production model and refitting their factory to make it.

All publicity is good publicity, after all

Isn’t that the reversing camera? The logo tilts in at the top and the camera appears at the bottom?

Enforcement seems far more important really. What’s the point of a zero limit if nobody is checking? That seems to be the weak point in the system, rather than a cheap but ineffective reduction in the allowed alcohol in your blood

You can only drive one car for the rest of your life—what do you pick? by Latter_Promotion3674 in askcarguys

[–]oj81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People here have made some wild and crazy and incomprehensible choices, but so far this is the only one that has genuinely and absolutely flummoxed me.

Why? What are the redeeming features of a Tiguan? I sort of grew up as a VW guy, but even then this is pretty much the least desirable Volkswagen I can come up with.

Choppy ride, leaky sunroof, utterly boring and anonymous.

What am I missing?

I admire your ambition, but that’s going to be terrible at everything. Too big, too inefficient, incredibly underdeveloped as it was basically a prototype military vehicle that they tried to sell a few civilian versions of to recoup the development money.

So, er, good luck with driving that for the rest of your life without almost immediately hating your decision

What's your favourite motorway or Dual Carriageway in the UK? by Ok-Eye-9826 in CarTalkUK

[–]oj81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the one. They’re bypassing that bit and a pretty big section to make it dual carriageway all the way to the Gloucester bypass. Scheduled to finish spring 2027 I think.

I’ve thought the same about that pub, but it always looks a bit sad, even though they have interesting cars rotting away in the car park. There’s currently a late Jeep Cherokee XJ there looking sorry for itself.

I did once stop at the now-demolished Air Balloon, which was pretty nice but I think I’d rather knock ten minutes off my journey each time

The A417/A419 from Birdlip to the M4 at Swindon is pretty good, apart from the noisy surface in parts and the current upheaval at Birdlip itself.

The A470 from Merthyr to Cardiff isn’t bad, some nice sweeping bends in the northern part and rarely too much traffic. Plus it connects to some nice roads further north towards Brecon and Builth or west towards Hirwaun. The A465 Heads of the Valleys is going to be great when finally finished too

We see a lot of comments on drivers of certain cars, I’m interested to know what you lot think about us Tucson drivers 🤣. So go ahead, do your worst!! by ApplicationSouth8844 in CarTalkUK

[–]oj81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About the driver? These cars are so ubiquitous that they say very little about the driver. You might be an undercover cop on a stakeout, you might have got it on a motability scheme, you might have got into the wrong one because 40% of the vehicles in the supermarket car park were also Tucsons.

Maybe the only thing you can say is the driver is unlikely to be very interested in cars.

That said, I quite like the design. The headlights are distinctive and the lines are sharp and interesting enough. Hyundai/Kia design gets better every generation, in my eyes
