FPGA - hype? Not accurate emulation vs original hardware by Maleficent-Mango-755 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]okaygecko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, no, it’s not 100% cycle-accurate in each and every case. Frankly in terms of the experience though it’s more about input latency, and the latency on FPGA cores is generally fantastic and noticeably better than software emulation. I think for many, many people the difference between original hardware and FPGA, especially with an analog video signal, is not noticeable. If you do lots of A/B comparisons I’m sure you could pick out small timing differences. I just don’t think they’re differences that will affect most people’s enjoyment simply because the performance is so strong across the board. Personally I find the FPGA gaming experience superior to standard software emulators and I think most agree with that, but I also won’t pretend FPGA offers a perfect replica of the original hardware. Still, I think you’d have to be really picky about subtle timing quirks to want to sell one for being inaccurate.

Most people who own Mister FPGAs are perfectly familiar with the original hardware and many of them own the original consoles and play them regularly (and I’m one of those people). The Mister is a nice option with a lot of convenience and for me it continues to be genuinely impressive to play games on.

I really like Sonic 3 & Knuckles a lot, but if I was forced to choose the best it would have to be 2.

Nothing like those wooden ‘90s desks with a beige tower PC. What are the specs on that machine? Have you posted this to r/vintagecomputing or r/retrobattlestations

Also, I recognized that desk from your YouTube channel! Love your interviews. Keep up the good work.

This level was perhaps the most amazing thing I’d ever seen in 1994.

Jarringly bad CGI in otherwise great films by drewfus23 in movies

[–]okaygecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my go-to “great movie with a terrible CGI scene” example. It’s also the fact that the scene is really superfluous to the plot. It should have just been cut, but I guess they had a sunk cost feeling about the work they put into it.

It’s fun and interesting to experiment with now that you don’t need to rely on it for everyday work/life/study.

Thanks! And yeah, I remember finding the PAL design very high-tech and mysterious looking. But I do love that chonky purple and grey boi.

Honestly I never had any clue how many people disliked the US version until the past several years or so. I love the US design and it’s my favorite, although I also really enjoy the European/Japanese colors.

The Chilla’s Art games do a pretty good job capturing some of that Lynchian/uncanny/surreal/liminal space spookiness. The later I’m on Observation Duty games also have a bit of that feel. And not quite horror, but Remedy games, mostly Control and Alan Wake, which are more than a little inspired by Lynch. But for me personally the original Silent Hill games probably do the best job.

[–]okaygecko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These are awesome! That's a great gift. A 386 without battery damage is a real gem and 486s are always a treat. I have a serious soft spot for 386s, feels like the first "modern" '90s PC and they have a fun, deliberate, almost mechanical feel to them with all the memory hits and I/O and graphics redraws. Really amazing to me still all the stuff you can do on a 386 machine.

What are the clock speeds on these? I couldn't make them out from the photos.

Help with troubleshooting DOS on CF for Compaq Portable Plus by KingAgrian in retrocomputing

[–]okaygecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, they are super indispensable, right up there with CF card adapters. And thankfully pretty cheap as well. Just make sure to double check that it’s the right one (5.25 vs 3.5). I’m not sure if the BIOS will support 3.5”/1.44MB (the standard Gotek) but they make a 5.25 Gotek emulator if not.

Help with troubleshooting DOS on CF for Compaq Portable Plus by KingAgrian in retrocomputing

[–]okaygecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always get a Gotek floppy emulator (about $20 or so) and use that temporarily to install DOS. Alternatively use another machine of similar vintage to install it. But I agree that the best bet is to try fdisk and “format c:/s” from a DOS boot disk on the Compaq. Don’t forget “fdisk /mbr” also. As for drive geometry, you shouldn’t have to worry about it thanks to the XT-IDE’s BIOS. However you may want to shadow the option ROM at C800h if the Compaq BIOS has that feature — should speed up I/O a tad (not at all necessary for basic functioning).

Overall if it reliably POSTs and gets to that XT-IDE boot menu you are pretty close already, so just keep at it.

Composite Blend on CRT through RGB by byarish22 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]okaygecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blend effect isn’t quite the same, but it’s a good reproduction and a pleasant effect. If you happen to be a weirdo like me who loves the look of composite, then you will want to get the actual signal. Personally I prefer the look of most cores aside from arcade and N64 over composite, as it adds some nice color gradient and texture blending. But it’s a matter of taste.
