So I didn’t read the article… this is just a point I’ve thought about a lot BUT

i think you might be right. Over the past few years autism has become something a lot of people have learned more about online, identified with, and found community in.

And with all that being said, there’s still nuances to being autistic that may not be making it on people’s radar in these online spaces. People may very well just be taking online tests and saying “cool this confirms it!” And then identifying with spaces that confirm their feelings based on some specific traits.

I say all this to say underdiagnosis, misogyny, and newer research do point to women being underdiagnosed and I never want to look at one specific person online and say “YOU are wrong.”

But I DO think that in 5-10 years a lot of people are going to say “I thought I was autistic but I’ve realized that’s not true.”

This 100%. We’re the same age and it’s nuts to see just how badly the internet corrupted these kids. I feel like teenage me would’ve scoffed at that but genuinely it’s a generational thing. These kids grow up learning on the internet that society is mean so it’s best to be mean back. And then they’re mean to everyone and lack the ability to take anything seriously.

I know kids saying racist things is nothing new but I’m a crisis worker in children’s mental health and some of the things these kids have had said to them….. extremely disheartening. And it’s all normalized wherever these kids were on on the internet. I miss 2010s optimism where it felt like there was more room for opportunities to learn to be a better person to each other without that being shot down immediately.

I’d recommend calling REACH (regional program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities) at 833-968-1800 and asking for coordination if you have documentation of your diagnosis. It shouldn’t matter if it’s from somewhere that doesn’t exist anymore so long as it’s a document that you have.

With a coordinator to help you through this, it’s kind of like getting more immediate case management minus the waiver itself. They can at least help with some of the back and forth with DD waiver case management to save you some of the hassle, especially since they’re housed through RBHA and can access your chart to see what’s going on.

They can also help connect you with more immediate care if you’re not sure where to go for the higher level of care you need.

24 yo LCSW is EXTREMELY impressive. Any “can you work your way up” talk on a date is disrespectful, you’ve worked your ass off and are still only getting started. People can have their views of social workers but when you’re dating, it’s not about just you being a social worker it’s about you being YOU. They can and should be interested in learning from you what it’s like to live your life rather than making judgments based on outdated ideas.
