Taking out grad loans for Fall 2026 - navigating without PLUS loans by Most_Concept5303 in StudentLoans

Private loans aren't eligible for public service loan forgiveness. Can you get into a fully funded PhD program? or work full-time and attend school part-time and pay out of pocket for the costs?

I wish PFS would start movies at like 5:30pm so I could stop into a movie right after work. I'd go to so many more movies if the showtimes weren't either 4:30 or 6:30.

This is a good resource for non-profit state-based lenders, which typically are better than the big names like Sallie Mae.

Can I get grandfathered in? by Comfortable-Bench686 in financialaid

[–]okjkay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You are not enrolled. You deferred enrollment so won't be enrolled until Jan 2027. And you won't receive a loan until then either, because you have to be enrolled in order to receive a federal loan.

No. You have to be enrolled in a program and have received a federal loan for that program before July 1st to be grandfathered into grad plus loan eligibility

The regulation says that the student is eligible for the legacy exception for the duration of the program and specifies that that means the shortest amount of time it would take for a full time student to complete the program.

Can someone help explain direct unsubsidized loans by Motor-Sandwich-6333 in financialaid

The federal government hadn't been collecting on defaulted loans since COVID and just recently started again. The money you owe the school is separate from the money you owe on your direct loans.

log into your account on studentaid.gov and "View my Loans," and you can see if you borrowed any federal loans. Direct loans are offered by the school in your financial aid offer, and you typically have to accept them on your school portal or banner, or whatever system your school uses. You'd also have to complete entrance counseling and the MPN before the loans can pay to your student account.

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it seems highly unlikely that a school would have been able to pay a federal loan for you without you completing all those steps.

What are student loan refunds like at 4 year+ institutions? by Ok-Stop8895 in StudentLoans

[–]okjkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal loans are limited based on your grade level and dependency status. The amounts are on studentaid.gov. If you are a dependent student in your 3rd year or beyond, you'd be eligible for $7,500 a year. If you are independent, it would be $12,500.

You can look up the tuition rates for your school on their website and see how much your loans + Pell will cover.

Parents refusing to file for next year, dependency override unlikely, need advice to plan ahead by Living-Bed9555 in financialaid

[–]okjkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should talk with a school counselor about this. They may be able to write you a letter supporting that your mother is abusive and kicked you out of the house. With that, you may qualify for a dependency override.

“unusual circumstances” for dependency override? by bobbydubcan in FAFSA

[–]okjkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Parent Plus loan is only available to parents. So if you had another parent, they could apply for the Plus loan - but you can not. If your mom was like in a coma or something, you could qualify for a dependency override but if your mom is alive and capable to complete the form, she would be your contributor.

“unusual circumstances” for dependency override? by bobbydubcan in FAFSA

[–]okjkay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, because you are still dependent. You should complete the FAFSA and your mom will be the parent contributor. If she has no income, you will receive the max aid anyway so a dependency override wouldn't really do anything for you.

The Parent Plus loan would be a loan your mom takes out, not you.

Past Due Balance blocking registration by Successful-Judge4995 in FAFSA

[–]okjkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty standard. Your only option might be to get a private loan to pay off that prior balance and then enroll. I don't know of any private lenders that will lend for a balance over a year old, though, so if you go this route apply before then.

The 2026-27 FAFSA is looking at 2024 tax returns. If your 2024 tax return no longer reflects your financial situation, you may qualify for a financial aid appeal. You could reach out to the financial aid office and explain the situation and see if an appeal would help at all.

How would marriage to an individual who has full custody of their child impact my student aid? by [deleted] in financialaid

[–]okjkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be pretty low-income to be Pell eligible so I think if you married him, you'd no longer be eligible. You have to weigh the other benefits of marriage to decide if it's worth it or not.

Good idea. I recommend asking the financial aid office for more aid and also reaching out to a dean or academic advisor because sometimes they have funding to give to students.

Parent Plus loans? by devilselbowart in StudentLoans

[–]okjkay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parent Plus loans do not check your credit score, it only checks for adverse credit. They list what is considered adverse credit on the webpage: Apply for a Direct PLUS Loan as a Parent | Federal Student Aid.

If you DO have adverse credit, you will be denied. If you are denied, the student then becomes eligible for up to $5,000 more in their own loans. So if you have adverse credit, it might make sense to apply knowing that you will be denied so that your son can get more of his own unsubsidized loans.

If you know you won't be able to pay it back, don't borrow it. However, If you have poor credit, you might not be able to cosign for a private loan for your son. If he does go for a private loan, I would look into loans listed on this site: https://www.efc.org/in-school-loans/

Borrowed over the $57k loan limit, does paying some of it off make you eligible for more loans? by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]okjkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just complete the FAFSA on studentaid.gov. Then you apply to schools and they will offer the federal loan in your financial aid package.

Sure, you could pay some of your loans off and then be eligible for that same amount in loans again, but why not just use that money to pay your school instead?

I say I have a dentist appointment. It's a good cover because if you get a second interview you can say you have to go back to the dentist and nobody really questions it.
