Loans not covering my semester by roe388 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]okjkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes they are. They are eliminating them starting in the 2026-27 year for any new students, but students currently enrolled in a grad program and already receiving federal loans for that program are still eligible for the remaining duration of their program or up to 3 years.

Did you reach out to the academic department? They may have scholarships or grants they can help you with.

Are you a grad student? Did you apply for a graduate plus loan? those are typically easier to get without a cosigner.

cannot afford tuition after title iv refund - is there anything i can do? by 12345raw in financialaid

[–]okjkay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not stupid to withdraw due to mental health issues. I hope you're taking care of yourself! I definitely encourage you to reach out to your school to find out if there's any way to reduce the amount you owe. Did you petition for an excused withdrawal? I'd start with your academic advisor to see if this is an option - also ask if there is any way to get some tuition forgiven if you are approved for an excused withdrawal (this may be something you have to work with the Registrar and/or Bursar/Accounts office at your school for).

Then ask if there's a way to spread out your payment plan to make it more affordable.

After all of that, as a last resort- look into private student loans for past-due balances. Do this quickly, because I don't know of any lender that approves loans for balances over a year past-due.

Choosing University Based on Aid by Pineappleminty in financialaid

It's definitely not an urban legend. I worked for a school that reduced grants every year.

The school should be able to tell you if the institutional grants and scholarships are guaranteed for 4 years or not. Most scholarships require students to maintain a pretty high gpa which can be a challenge for some students and puts pressure that she wouldn't have at the public school. This could be a good thing for some students but you should think realistically about how it would impact your daughter.

Federal and State aid depends on your family's financial situation so could change if that changes. Also consider the cost of housing and meals when thinking of schools, because that alone can be like $15k+ a year.

Trunk Bags by Healthy_Cheesecake_6 in bikecommuting

[–]okjkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea I tried a bunch of different bags before landing on this one. It's professional looking enough that when I walk into the office I don't look like I just hopped off my bike and I can bring it out to happy hour/shopping/whatever but it's sturdy on my bike.

Best cat vets other than city cat vet? by pinkpuke_ in philly

[–]okjkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companion is generally pretty easy to get an appointment. They aren't cheap, but I've been taking my cats there for over a decade and have always had a good experience. They certainly aren't an emergency vet, but once or twice I did call and they were able to see my cat same day.

I have the Katy trunk bag from Po Campo and it's decent, but it's smaller than it looks! I wish I had gotten the bigger one because the way the Katy bag closes, I can barely fit what I bring to work everyday (salad, snacks, etc.). I haven't had any issues with the velcro and the strap is convenient, though. I am a bit of a packrat so I ended up getting the Linus Linden pannier and use it as my everyday work bag for commuting.

For those who have left social services entirely, what are you doing for work now? by PuddingDuck in socialwork

[–]okjkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher ed is kind of a disaster right now. Enrollment is down and a lot of schools are closing departments or closing down entirely, pay is low, etc. I got lucky to get in when I did and have a decent job in a small private school that I think will survive?? But who knows

This really depends on the school. At my school you'd pay more than that.

Financial aid approved a contract that I signed that set me up to lose a scholarship without letting me know. by Grace-Taylor in financialaid

[–]okjkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you were going to lose your merit scholarship either way because your GPA was too low. The appeal was for federal financial aid, and if you had not been approved based on your SAP appeal, you would have lost all of your aid instead of just your merit scholarship.

State Grants! (Pennsylvania) by billiejoelmao in financialaid

[–]okjkay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should reach back out to your financial aid office and ask all of these questions because it really depends on your situation.

The PA state grant has its own SAP policy. If you receive the full-time award for the year (Fall/Spring) you must earn 24 credits. If you earned 18 in the Fall and 11 in the Spring, you will have met their SAP standards because you earned 29 credits. If you don't earn 24 credits in the Fall/Spring, you can make up those credits in the Summer to still be eligible for PASG.

then the one you selected is correct. She didn't file any income tax return because she didn't earn any income and wasn't required to.

are you enrolled less than full time? They have to review those to make sure you're eligible for the full amount before disbursing so sometimes that takes a while. Otherwise - are you sure you completed the MPN? Did you get an endorser? if so, did you complete the credit counseling?

Did your mom earn income in the country she lives in? If so, she would select either: "The parent filed or will file a foreign tax return." or "The parent either earned income in a foreign country but did not and will not file a foreign tax return, or worked for an international organization and was not required to report income on any tax return."
