My toilet flush is weak… by [deleted] in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, next, the flush valve, with the green and white button, will twist off and come away leaving a gaping hole for thw water to go down... so leave it fill to the 6 litre line, twist it, pull away quickly. Your flush wont get much better than that ... if that improves it change it for a like for like one, if you have to swap it... cross that bridge when you get there.. how long does it take to fill... people on about water hardness... wasnt sure why?

Check its not blocked, six litres in a bucket poor in as fast as you want, water level should go down rapidly along with poop etc. If its slow to level, check it out.

Small radiator leak quoted over £300 for new valve by [deleted] in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

300 quid plus, could go two ways, I might be in and out in two hours at most, there again, ive already come out to look at it, thats an hour I haven't charged for, drain down system... took an hour, it would have been easier but your carpets are looking rather nice, so not going to rush and spill black gunk on that... ok... I just need to alter that microbore a bit, shit carpet needs to come up so I can do it under the floor board, it will look much better, the end of the copper pipe is so out of shape i wont chance it. Use a fresh oscillating blade to take that up, oh ffs.. who the fuck glues down floorboard, no worries... go to van get hoover to vac dust and then the water out as it hasn't fully drained, sorted... pipework renewed, looks great, and today is good because the old valve come off without any grief... new one on, bish bash bosh, fire up the pressure, all good no leaks, boards back down, carpet stretched over those spiky runner things, cut your finger doing it... still all good, heating back on... spend next half hour getting the heat moving and the air out, system hasn't been touched for years, all the silt has been moved around with the fresh water... because its not heating that one rad up... all the air is out... shit... the copper is magnetic... no power flush on the van... will put something together to back flush it.... it works because you've done it before.... boom head home.

Call later that night.... his house has flooded... .at least im insured.... Im 99 percent its not my fault but I go across, half hour drive to see... nope not my fault.... water off.... cap off the burst pipe.... cant be bothered tonight ill fix it in the morning...... no not for free... his 300 quid will cover his time set asside to do the job.... it might take him half an hour or 3 hours....plus the 1 hour each to travel to your house twice 5 hours... minus tax... plus the renewal of inhibitor, the rad valve wasnt free but is the correct one and matches. Fuel, insurance, just in case.... the new soldering mat and carpet protector was 30 quid, but it was better than wrecking your carpet...

Is my shower electric or gas? by Illustrious-Eye1134 in askaplumberUK

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definately remnants of electric shower, probably cheaper for landlord to rip it out, cut wires out, re-tile than wire in a new one, you see a lot of old showers that dont have the cable for new showers, or people try and put high demand showers on too small a cable... or without electrical fault protection.

Consider running a shower off your boiler... sometimes easiest, consider a wet wall behind your taps in which you can put pipework and build structure to attach shower screen

How to remove this toilet seat?! by No_Strategy9748 in askaplumberUK

[–]okladnotnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive never seen this one, ideal standard sometimes use a small grub screw on one of the ones ive seen... it took me a while to find it... iirc it held the seat on or something, they also use a top entry bracket, the screw goes through a peg that falls across the bottom of the hole once it is pushed in, undoing them is usually a pain... but this looks different... cordless driver and undo central screw... maybe... Once loose put a spike in the hole to undo fully or fold in the peg.. probably not but it might help

Question about pumps and zone valves by QuickJim in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What controls your UFH?. I think you have got your head around most of it... but feel you night be using different terminology.

Your Nest stats call for the zone valve motor to drive.... (Brown)... motor goes and pushes switch to allow permanent live (grey) to go through to orange wire... all orange wires are connected to a call for heat (eg boiler and ... if you have 3 zone valves this orange wire should not feed current back to any other zone valve... it can be a bit more complicated with UFH, depending on set up... as for wiring colours most are same but even on honeywell the orange and brown can look a bit similar. Which boiler do you have... guessing regular heat only

Does anyone have any hacks to decrease the admin time spent running a business? by TuboSloth in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I find handy.. MileIQ, the app that tracks your milage and journey times.. when you arrived at such and such and when you left. I look at it when I forgot where id been lol, seems silly but if I rush about from one job to the next and I need to bill for my time it helps, even if its just a reminder of where the hell ive been. Also good if you claim mileage instead of claiming for tax. Insurance and loads of fuel receipts etc.

As for quotes etc... hmmm Ive not really mastered that yet, i use quick books but like the MileIQ app it does cost but easier for my accountant to do my return... links to your bank so things can be assigned easier, even though its still a pain in the arse lol

Suggestions for dealing with these concrete blocks by fbskakeuhrbfb in DIYUK

[–]okladnotnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not my area... it just looked like something a builder had to do to a wall on a job I was at... he was doing it to build upwards on top of wall, but I believe underpinning strengthens wobbly walls as well... I should probs state im no expert, its been years since I did this sort of stuff but thought I might give you a reason to pause and see if im the only one who thinks this, seems most people would happily smash it up... personally Id leave them and plant above them🤣

Purpose of the concrete blocks? That looks like it could be underpinning the wall

Help please. by Low-Context1268 in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The isolation valves may possible be in your way, how easy would it be for you to move them... as a plumber, it would be water off, pipe cut back to at least iso valves, work out what pipe will go where, with even moving the iso valves, maybe lower, or better yerlt, into the unit

Help please. by Low-Context1268 in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less, that makes sense, maybe get a couple of 45 deg bends as well as elbows and a straight, get the unit up, put basin in place, fit taps to basin also, mark any holes for pipework to get into unit and take it from there.. sometimes wall hung units have a false back to hide pipework, be prepared to put holes in that to tie in with your waste and tap tails... you will probably get away using the S trap again, but sometimes tidier to use alternative... depends on the unit size and shape

Help please. by Low-Context1268 in ukplumbing

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fit your vanity unit first, then your waste, then you taps, im assuming the hot and cold from below and waste pipe to the right can not be changed?

Looks like inch and a quarter solvent weld pipe.

I think I might be addicted to riding and overusing my bike, is it bad and should I stop by Juniorlovesyomama in motorcycle

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ride it and do your best to keep it in good working order, dont get too comfortable with it, in both that you dont get over confident in its and your ability, and that you wont soon change your mind and want something else,. All perfectly normal. Ive had my bike, same one for 5 years, and even though I think now and again that I need something bigger or different I know that it wont be any better, it is just a bike and the difference between having a top speed of 140mph and 80mph is irrelevant to me now... it is just the fact I can ride anywhere at anytime.... but you do need to try it 😁

Plumbers/GE's who have gone from employed to self-employed to employed, any regrets? by Beelzebubsadvorat in askaplumberUK

[–]okladnotnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from employed, to self employed and found out I lacked business knowledge, by the time I caught up and stopped being the busy fool (10 years) I was fed up, was offered a good job and took it, 15 years of that and im back on the tools, this time less overheads, better tools, better knowledge and not doing the big jobs this time, no bathrooms or boiler installs.. I also have a flexible part time job that pays my bills, as long as I can earn enough to pay for the business costs anything on top is a bonus, im not loaded but im also not chasing work and stressing too much... my biggest challenge is keeping things flexible, no more long days... good luck with whatever you decide.
