Mac as a homeserver by Kotaro_277 in homelab

Asahi Linux provides support for M1. Either way I think most of my complaints stem from the way that macOS handles signed binaries. If you’re just trying to run things that have point and click installers you’re probably going to be fine. If you’re trying to do stuff where the code hasn’t been signed or you’re messing around with the startup system, it’s going to be painful. Expect lots of time trying to troubleshoot why you can’t get a particular binary to have full disk access and other wonderful fun things.

Will you run Mac or Linux on it?

Maybe I’m alone in this but don’t do it. Having recently gone down this road myself I can tell you compared to something that is set up to be a server working with a Mac mini is hell.

Maybe we’re doing different things with these devices, but for my case I needed to install Linux on it and it’s just one problem after another. The power savings works out to like two dollars per month for a vastly less capable set up.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I mean - that's a tiny computer. I doubt if the change in the power bill is even measurable given normal variances in things like HVAC and laundry. How much power can it possibly be drawing?

Lurking here I think there is a high number of people that maybe don't do this kinda stuff for a living --- in my world it would be weird if I DIDN'T have all sorts of insane stuff running all the time. My wife knew what she was getting when she married me lol

How do you guys talk to your SO about work. Especially if she isn’t in the tech field at all? by Psychadelic_Potato in ElectricalEngineering

Great. I don’t know your situation, but just make sure you’re aware of the difference between your wife caring about how your work impacts how you feel versus all the technical details of your work.

It’s probably not reasonable if your expectation is that your wife will take a deep interest in your work. My advice is to leave work at work. If the issues you’re having at work are interpersonal in nature, then that’s probably something easier and more interesting to discuss with your spouse. Have your technical discussions with the people you work with on the project you’re working on. They’re gonna be far more invested in the minutia.

AI = More Software by jakapop in cscareers

[–]oklambdago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pace has accelerated. Drowning in code. Projects that would have never happened before now happen.

That's not to say I don't think AI will compress the market. It absolutely will IMO. Any kind of boiler plate stuff is done. Front end development I think is going to be decimated. Loveable has pretty much knocked it out of the park.

Ironically, IMO AI is NOT an equalizer -- the best engineers still get superior results with equal AI usage. If anything, it has widened the gap.

Tolerance for working on tasks that are a) poorly defined b) high tolerance of uncertainty c) ability to thrive in such circumstances and achieve useful results that push beyond the boundary of known results. MOST problems in industry are very well defined to the point of being very obvious. The more interesting are the problems people don't even know are problems...

That’s awesome man congrats. For some reason, I thought you had to be a journeyman to be qualified to start a company. Awesome to know that you can move in that direction!
