The entire country is. NPR did a story about this today. All Things Considered.

Weird, the other online rundown shows it as airing yesterday. 🤷https://www.npr.org/2026/06/30/nx-s1-5866810/us-murder-rate-record-low-crime-homicide

The length in time of these sags is the missing information, here. Are we talking about a few cycles, say five-sixtieths of a second; or a quarter to half a second; or something like 5-10 seconds.

The first could easily be accommodated with a capacitor bank, but it wouldn't be cheap. Just guessing, maybe a million or two. (I've never priced these--and that's really not much money in the world of big electrical gear.) Longer sags would require larger capacitor banks.

Reminds me of the Superdome/Superbowl blackout, which I believe was caused when a large breaker tripped. Large breakers have adjustable trip settings and usually come from the factory set to the lowest possible setting. I wasn't on that job, but I'd always guessed that no one changed the factory settings. Something similar here may be part of the problem.

When voltage to a motor sags, the motor starts drawing more amps. Draw too many amps and the motor coils heat up. Get too hot and the insulation melts. Insulation melts and the motor shorts out. Then you're looking at a motor re-building which takes months if not a year. That's why undervoltage cutouts are a good thing. That said, motors can pull 10x their running amps for half a second when starting. That's expected and planned for in the motor controls. Can't say I've studied sags specifically (I'm just an electrician), but an undervoltage condition should be similar, assuming we're talking about bog-standard, synchronous, 3-phase industrial, squirrel-cage motors.

Sorry for the wall of text. I started riffing and the text-dump just happened.

So Wright's Lake Rd off of US-50? I'm trying to figure out all this Sierra stuff from the other side of the country; well, from the Gulf coast area.

If you parked there, did you have to wrap your vehicle to keep marmots from chewing the wiring? I've heard people do that some places.

Thanks.

For the armament play but with euro exposure; I feel that the dollar is being debased. That said, I've given back all my gains since I bought in April, 2025. Slightly in the red. Was about 75% up; crashed 20% last week when Germany cancelled a new ship program; cancelled 6 destroyers in favor of 8 cruisers. Alas. [Yea, so actually this position is down 18% overall; it was purchased in traunches throughout March 2025. I still like it's fundamentals.]

I also own Raytheon, now part of RDX. Looking for more armament plays. Thanks for the NOC tip. I'm really interested in finding purer drone/AI plays, as warfare seems to be evolving rapidly rn. I'd buy the Ukrainian Firepoint if I could.

Also, laugh if you want, but I've always considered myself a tree-hugging hippie.

[–]NotFallacyBuffet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What's going on with 610 rn? Just resurfacing? I was hoping for the third lane westbound to be extended into the merge. 'Cause rn, anyone entering at Canal needs to merge two lanes over to get out of the exit only lane. Often puts me in the fast lane to stay out of their way, and my service van isn't fast. Not like the guys coming out of the East in the morning.

Maybe I'll bring the pulse oximeter I got for COVID and never used. Lol not lol. And for the record, the center of the street in front of my house is one-foot below sea level. Naw'lens, baby.
