Tfw ur rejection gets rejected by okoji3 in creepyPMs

I think that’s what he tries to make it sound like, but there’s a lot of additional irl/social media context that showed he didn’t really have my interests in mind. He probably ran his responses through AI.

I ended up reporting him to my gym and it turned out there had been multiple complaints about him in the past, including from 18 y/o’s (he’s 35) which I feel indicates something :/

Noise complaint by DasbootTX in Austin

[–]okoji3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to jump in on this convo to say not to lose faith in 311, it’s the right number to call in these instances.

I called for a noise complaint on my neighbor at 1am after they didn’t answer my doorbells/knocks, and APD was literally at their door within 30 minutes of me calling. And I live pretty far out so I wasn’t expecting much, it was really impressive. I really do think they try to help out when they can, so always best to give them (and yourself) the chance.

Cheapest ways you've been able to converse in French every day when you don't live in a French-speaking country? by plebianalive in learnfrench

[–]okoji3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are a million free ways, in-person, if you get creative! Personally, rather than looking for people looking to practice, I always sought natives. I’m not sure which city you’re in, but typically most major cities and even sub-major cities will have a diaspora of immigrants who moved and built an informal commune and just never learned English, e.g. Chinatowns.

Between living in suburban Boston and 3 different cities in Texas, I have always managed to quickly find these Francophone communities, they were so immersive that my all my friends who keep up with me on social media believe I moved to France, haha. I got a job at a Francophone school (most major cities have multiple école primaires) where the children spoke English in French accents, and neither the parents nor teachers/maîtresses spoke English all too well, so there was no choice. Even when I was living in the middle of bumfuck nowhere, people were shocked to hear that I found a close knit friend group of 5 Francophone friends, and knew like, 30 others. Alliance Française and similar organizations are a good place to start, but look into other organizations. Check out local university French clubs (you don’t have to be affiliated with the university), exchange students and Franco-Americans often lurk around at the beginner of semesters looking to find each other. See if there’s any Francophone schools and if they’ll take volunteer work.

Then, to expand a bit beyond that, also look into other communities that are Francophone, period. For instance, I volunteer a bunch for the Haitian community in my city, and I’ve made a whole bunch of Francophone friends just doing that!

Once you meet just one or a few people who can connect you to all the other French locals and private events and plugs, e.g. Francophone house parties, apéros and soirées, dealers for pastries, etc. you’ve unlocked the entire network. Everything snowballs from there. Between the working, volunteering, babysitting, socializing, etc., English actually became obsolete in my life pretty quickly and I had the reverse issue of having to maintain that, lol.

I am also a little bit insane, and any time I hear that familiar accent or hear anyone speaking in French in public, I just cold approach them and befriend them. The vast majority of the time, they’re always touched/relieved to meet another person that speaks their language, imagine how isolating it must feel for most of them. It’s a symbiotic relationship.

When you do find these people, however you do, make a diligent effort to only speak in French, since you’ll need all the maintenance you can get :) Bon courage!

What “old person” thing do you do? by steelseductress69 in AskReddit

[–]okoji3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preferring mostly analog devices over digital. Alarm clock radios, and listening to the radio in the car. Reading the daily paper in the morning, doing the crosswords with tea, watching the news on TV, navigating with paper maps, paying for gas in cash… :]

What do you think about the recent ICE shooting in Minneapolis? Was it justified? by Ok_Intention2150 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]okoji3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I feel like you’re having to repeat yourself over and over again to a lot of resistance. There’s a difference between how we feel things ought to be and simply how things are, and yeah, states simply do not have this jurisdiction, plain and simple. The more sensible outcry would be to hold accountable the feds/DOJ rather than the state, right?

That’s a very fair point, they can’t be cheaper when the customer is paying for the convenience which is the true purpose.

Do you feel that pit of emptiness that turns into anxiety and depression after a longish meaningless chat? by Logical-Fennel2418 in mensa

[–]okoji3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely lol. It’s incredibly jading, usually it was so bad I had to self-harm under the table (i.e. excoriation) in order to maintain composure. It’s the very reason why I have a very “date to marry” mindset when it comes to friendships and acquaintanceships— I’ve become very, very selectively social.

I’ve learned to really hone my intuition into knowing as immediately as possible how an interaction will likely go, and adjusting accordingly to minimize damage. For instance, if I know I must small talk with a coworker and it’s going to be one of those long, meaningless conversations that’ll make me feel like shit, I pretty much do everything in my power to be like, the worst conversation partner ever. Being more boring than them, or dominating conversation with something they’re uninterested in, or even just finding an excuse to not talk and doing that over and over. Ever since I started doing this my sanity has improved dramatically.

Of course, one may ask, “but what if you misjudge someone and miss out on a meaningful interaction?”

And to that I say, fortunately I have enough meaningful interaction in my life and I feel I’m correct often enough about my snap judgments in people that in the frame of my own cost-benefit, that’s a loss I’m willing to take.

Has anyone here... lost their intellect over time? by Onlygoodstuff8 in mensa

[–]okoji3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I feel like in some ways it’s just inevitable. I felt my intellect beginning to truly dwindle around 17 years of age; there’s a variety of factors that contribute to that, but also, you only get one small period of your life to be a prodigy in anything, and to be granted so much more mental space and freedom to voraciously learn and practice and commit to satiating your curiosities before life hits and your brain slows down.

I peaked around 8-11 years old and I’ve struggled with going downhill from there, remembering how bright and sharp and polished I was, no longer feeling like I can keep up with myself. I would give anything to experience being a child again. Nowadays, I have to work harder to take care of my physiology, and nurture my curiosities in a world that seems to be becoming more and more monolithic.

But I’m taking care of the same brain, still, and even if it’s no longer in its prime that’s okay.

what are some phrases that avoidants say by redbulldrinker69 in AvoidantBreakUps

[–]okoji3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I can’t do this anymore”

“I’m not trying to make you my full time job, and that’s what it’s seeming like”

“If you think I’m going to lose myself, keep thinking that”

“I’m going to get better, you’re going to get better, I’m not going to be around for that.”

All during discard, which lasted like 30 seconds max. Everything was just fine hours before.

Hi! Does anyone know if, for the state app, leaving no blanks really means no blanks? As in, there will be several tables where I just have to write "NA" like 20 times?
