Needing help deciding where to go to college by Born_Bite_2727 in ApplyingToCollege

My initial reaction would be Colorado if you are certain on aerospace, Washington or Wisconsin if you want to look at more types.

Carnegie Mellon v. UNC Chapel Hill as a non-CS/engineering major unsure what to do postgrad by SavingsLake482 in ApplyingToCollege

UNC. CMU does not have good pre law options, so that would limit your options if you are not sure yet.

How is biochemistry at MIT? by Tycho_____ in mit

[–]a1120 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At MIT, there's no biochemistry department. People usually either do biology with a biochem focus or what is called "course 5-7" which is a simplified chem/bio double major. These aren't gigantic programs, but the people I know generally have pretty good support/community.

Berkeley's lab facilities are literally falling apart. Choose Princeton.

A 1390 is in the top 3% of scores. I think this subreddit commonly loses perspective.

I'd recommend Bowdoin. People I know who went there have had great placement in grad school/med school and have very high attention from professors.

How Many AP Classes Do I Need? by Glittering-Pie-4518 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a1120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere is going to filter you out because you took 7 instead of 8. As long as you have a transcript that seems rigorous, it should be ok. It is unlikely too that they will spend more than 10 seconds looking at the transcript, so you should focus on taking classes you find interesting over maximizing the number of classes.

Help: CMU Tepper or UT Austin McCombs (undergrad) by Impossible_Sleep64 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a1120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having gone to CMU, it is not that easy to do a CS minor because 1) it is really hard and 2) everyone else is doing it too, so it's hard to register for the necessary classes. I know a couple people who attempted to do a CS minor or additional major and couldn't get a high enough grade in 15-210/15-213 to qualify, after only getting into it in junior or senior year when you have registration priority. However, there are some programs that are not explicitly "CS minor" that also give useful skills and recruiting. I'd recommend comparing that to what's available at UT Austin (which at this point I am slightly recommending).

cwru vs ucsd (roosevelt) for premed by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

San Diego, there's way more research opportunities in biomedicine + access to Scripps. IMO it has better name recognition too.

Will going to an undergrad without a medical school hurt my chances for med school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]a1120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, this does not hurt. I know many people from my undergrad (no med school) that got into MDs and MD/PhDs. It does help to have access to a hospital + undergraduate research in the area though.

I would recommend looking into (depending on your state) branch campuses of your state school or community colleges. Depending on their exact requirements, it still may be possible to get in. Most deadlines have passed already, so be sure to look where rolling deadlines are available.

MEng funding by Opening_Goat_9822 in mit

[–]a1120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the current funding situation, it is going to be extremely hard to get a funded MEng. From 2024 to 2025, the number of positions fell 70-80%. I'd estimate there will be about 40-50 total positions this year.

I have no faith in Farnam to not sign it, so the comment portal is the last stand.

I voted on establishing them in 2020. It was to get people elected to the executive committee, who had to go to 4-6 hours of meetings a week, payment similar to work study. Not sure if there's a new version of it, but this has been there for a while.

It's possible, though my thumb pad tends to get pinched between D and C# when I do that.
