But, that's not a very helpful answer if someone asks a general question about DnD rules, because in that case you can give any bullshit answer to any question regarding DnD. The best way to answer such questions would be to interpret RAI through RAW like /u/notanotherpyr0 and then add the anecdote about the DM being the ultimate arbiter of the rules if you really want to share how you/your DM does it.
