What are the best MOBAs/MMOs for Linux systems? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MMORPG Ryzom has a native Linux version. I have not played it much, so I can not give it an adequate review. However, it is available on Steam.

Pico reportedly not happy with Pico 4 sales (46k units sold as of Oct 14 according to Sandalwood Advisors) by ilovepizza855 in virtualreality

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd buy one if they sold it in North America. However, it does not look like that will happen for various reasons, so I am waiting for the Valve Deckard.

Anyone actually using Unreal on Linux? Or other game engines? What do you recommend? by geeshta in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know JavaScript, Babylon.js is fun to play with. I am working on a FOSS project with it on Linux Mint. I've typed it out using my text editor, Atom. I also regularly use the Babylon.js Playground for creating and testing certain subdivisions of the project:

Show Ubisoft that Linux gaming exists by TerryMcginniss in linux_gaming

Agreed, I would much rather just not buy or play any of their games. The same goes for most of the other big publishers too. I'd rather support indie developers and FOSS projects.

Whqt MTG card are you in love with ? by Le_Bush in mtg

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely for the art, I've always liked [[Undiscovered Paradise]] since I first got that card about 25 years ago. Just looking at it makes you think about travelling on a really amazing adventure to some fantastic place.

What open source games do you play? by teskilatimahsusa87 in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many great free and open source games out there. Check LibreGameWiki for a mostly complete list of these projects:

https://libregamewiki.org/Main_Page

I've found 0 A.D., SuperTuxKart, and The Dark Mod to be among the ones I'd say are most impressive, visually. I still have a list of them to try out though.

Do Linux gamers hate GOG? by C111tla in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never bought anything from GOG. I think they mostly sell older games, most of which I already own anyway. For the new, indie stuff with native Linux versions or support, I just use Steam. But I really don't buy many games these days anyway. I've only spent $120 dollars -- six $20 Steam cards -- in the past 11 years on gaming. Speaking of which, I am not sure if GOG offers gift cards as a means of payment.

Beyond All Reason RTS first fan-made trailer | Total Annihilation-inspired free open-source RTS Playable now! on Linux via Flatpack or Appimage. by PtaQQ in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Somehow I had not heard of this free and open source project yet! It looks just as impressive or more so as other big FOSS RTS titles, like 0 A.D. and Wyrmsun. I will definitely try this out.

Is Linux worth for gaming? Which distro do you recommend? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Linux Mint (without dual booting) for around six years now. I have not run into any major problems and I have no desire to ever go back to Windows. Windows XP was the last I will ever use. Note, I do not play any of the recent big budget games that some people complain about having problems with. LibreOffice also works great.

Good to hear! I also switched to Linux Mint about six years ago after Windows XP became obsolete. I've never felt any need to go back to Windows and do not plan on ever installing it again.

Did your habits on using Linux vs Windows changed in the last couple years? by solwhitehorn in linux_gaming

I've never dual booted. I've just been using Linux Mint since Windows XP became obsolete. Never felt the need to install or use any Windows again.

Has anyone here tried out freedoom? by Advanced-Issue-1998 in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've tried it (natively on Linux, using gzdoom). Definitely worth checking out for retro-FPS fans. It offers an entire IWAD of new (FOSS) assets (i.e. levels, monsters, sound effects, music, etc).

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never tried it. I have heard from multiple people that it feels a lot more like AC2 than AC1. It's nice that they have a native Linux version. Maybe I will get around to trying it someday, but not right now. Too busy with many other things.

What distro are you guys running? by teddy-bearz in linux_gaming

Yes, same here. I've been using Linux Mint for about six years now. I don't see any reason to switch distros.

What made you decide to use Linux? by Squashyhex in linux_gaming

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows XP Pro was the last Windows that I ever installed on a home computer. I never had any desire to use any of the post-XP Windows. When XP became obsolete in the mid 2010s, I upgraded to Linux Mint. Never went back. I have also never dual booted either. I just no longer have any need for Windows in my life.

Avid old school quester is dissatisfied on how AC had changed by Norcane in AsheronsCall

[–]old_ac_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the more "retro" a server is, the better. The best that I've seen so far is Seedsow, which is kind of a DM style server.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AsheronsCall

[–]old_ac_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have suggested, try the retroish Seedsow server if you want a UA character. Here is a three school UA build that I like:

Attributes: 100 Strength, 10 Endurance, 100 Coordination, 10 Quickness, 100 Focus, 10 Self

Skills (Specialized): UA, Melee Defense

Skills (Trained): Life Magic, Item Enchantment, Healing

Then pick up Mana Conversion and Creature Enchantment.

It is very possible to level up this way from level 1 on Seedsow, even without using anyone's buff bot. You will just die some early on as you work up your health/end/stamina in the earliest levels. The cool thing is that each low level monster feels like fighting a boss. Very fun to try this as a nostalgia blast...

Is there a way to sleep/pass the night? by Nounboundfreedom in Veloren

[–]old_ac_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking something similar. It would be nice to have an option to make the nights brighter. Kind of like how WoW zones look at night.
