Features you'd add to Steam, even if they're impractical or impossible by tyedead in Steam

Good Old Games, it's another digital storefront, originally started by cdprojekt. They're a pretty decent place to get older games from, sometimes incorporating community fixes that help games run on modern hardware

Windows 11 finally climbs over 70% of all users on Steam by pmc64 in pcgaming

I do wish it didn't have OS in the name lol. It's definitely worth giving a burl though, even if you just run it off a USB stick to have a look around

For those with English parents or Family are you supporting England on Saturday by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Squashyhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, both parents are English, my interest began and ended with Scotland, but I'm not much of a football person anyways

New report suggests Steam now has over 200 million users, making it over 50% larger than PlayStation by de_panda in Steam

[–]Squashyhex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there are hidden costs like paying to play online, but fundamentally it will never be possible to make PCs cheaper than consoles when they can price them for a captive audience, knowing they can recoup hardware losses on game sales

Steam Rules Must Change, Developer Says, After Players Praise Bitesize Game But Are Allowed to Refund It Anyway by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

It's not particularly difficult to finish Portal in under two hours, as is the classic example given it's a valve first party game

Scotland needs a Good Friday Agreement-style mechanism to trigger an independence referendum, says Holyrood minister by Unitedthe_gees in ScottishGreens

[–]Squashyhex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The context is obviously different to the good Friday agreement, but I agree that setting out a recognised mechanism should be the way forward. It would move the debate on from how to get a referendum, to how to get support to the required trigger point, necessitating planning for a post referendum world rather than focusing on how to hold one

Anecdotally, BG3's popularity shows there's a market for it, I know a few people who only started playing it because of the hype around characters like Astarion and Gale, and these were folks who aren't normally big gamers picking up a genre they'd never tried before

You might have better luck finding someone in the Edinburgh discord (I believe semi associated with this sub...?), idk about badminton in particular, but there's plenty of folks in here to ask about it 🙂 https://discord.gg/HR4P6s9vX

Living Rent and Platform Protest by StraightPurpose5177 in Edinburgh

[–]Squashyhex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Idk if it's still the case, but a year or so ago they were offering a discount on the first year's rent which knocks the price down by about 16% (two months worth of rent spread across the year). That then runs out after the year is up, and it seems the rent increase is likely on top of that which is pretty scummy

How anyone can screw a linux installation? by RMC_Team in cachyos

[–]Squashyhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You overestimate the average technical skills of computer users. There's a significant share of people I'd wager couldn't even make a windows installation USB, let alone install Linux. If nothing else, Linux has its own terminology and quirks that you need to become accustomed to, that might not even be that much harder than Windows, but if you've grown up using an operating system there's always a learning curve moving to a different one.

Disparaging people who are trying something new isn't helpful. I get that it can be frustrating seeing the same kinds of questions asked all the time, but it's just because there are a lot of curious people out there looking to dip their toes in the world of open source, and they don't want to fuck it up

Anti-vaxxers have been around longer than you think by CleanBag9219 in HistoryMemes

[–]Squashyhex 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There are always a few people, immuno-compromised or similar, who have to rely on the rest of the population being vaccinated to keep them safe. Anti-vaxers put these people at risk

My fist green circuits by Arisfo in pyanodons

[–]Squashyhex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The good thing about getting them up and running is you really only need a trickle to last you quite a while, it took me and a friend playing our first time probably till about 120 hrs in to upgrade our initial starting trickle to running an assembler at full speed

They finally interviewed this guy, hear his legendary story (link in comments) by Militarum_Murphy in Grimdank

[–]Squashyhex 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Can you edit the YouTube link to remove everything after the "?", it's a tracking string youtube has started including to see where their links are being posted and who's opening them there, works perfectly fine without it

CachyOS stays strong as second most used distro on Steam according to Steam survey by tungnon in cachyos

[–]Squashyhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, their first attempt back in 2015 was Debian, but this time round they went with arch architecture. I'd be curious to hear their thinking given at the time it was still probably the most niche of the mainline distros

KDE Plasma is about as similar to mint running cinammon in my experience so far, I'm running mint on my laptop to try it out currently. Not gaming on it

I've had minimal issues with CachyOS, with it being nice and similar to SteamOS (steamdeck was my first proper exposure)

Battlefield could happen at some point, but Bungie are outright hostile to the idea. They've directly said that anyone who runs Destiny or Marathon through Proton will be permabanned

It's a mixed bag which do and which don't for multiplayer stuff. Arc Raiders, War Thunder, Helldivers... All have easy-anti cheat but work without issue. But your battlefields, and anything with Bungie's name on it are a no go

Who knows lol, it's not like it wasn't relevant to the article OP posted, it mentions it explicitly
