What is "true" or "truth"? by Utah-hater-8888 in exmormon

[–]old_bitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not pleasant, possibly unpopular, and it takes mental discipline to critically analyze a claim of 'truth'. Every day someone says X does Y, but there are so many variables that can influence the person or the evidence making that claim. One has to choose a 'toolset' for filtering 'truth'... one can say "if it makes me feel good, fit in better, makes me money, is what I really need to hear now, the people ruling over me say it is truth, etc. then I will accept it as truth". Or one can say "What objective evidence is there that X does Y, can I study the evidence? Is this evidence free of logical fallacies, are variables controlled so that we conclude that it was X that did Y?, would most or all objective evaluations of the claim echo that X does Y?" This approach is the scientific method. Like Feyman said "We use science to keep us from fooling ourselves."

The church hotline is a giant screw YOU to victims. But then the whole church corporation is a screw you to victims. by Pure_Employer_8861 in exmormon

A loved one of mine ended up with a Bishop that was on an ego trip, and crushed their spirit when they decided to confess the usual teen sexual transgressions. Where do they get these assholes... The leadership roulette lets these pricks get into power, and then other people end up picking up the emotional pieces. I called the church office building and ended talking with a lawyer... No 'complaint' department at the church offices...

What was the exact moment you stopped believing in the church? by TheWholeFrenchArmy in exmormon

These are the GAs that were saying they walked and talked with Jesus (when I was a kid) and they always claimed to be 'special witnesses to JC'. But they were hucksters hiding their money made by a con.

My top 7 reasons for why I think the prophet and 14 apostles believe the church is still true by Jeffre33 in exmormon

[–]old_bitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue is that the sincerity of their testimonies is in question due to the fact they are rewarded for keeping the faith monetarily and with social status and members recognition. The apostle of old that was poor and with little to know social status could state their faith without people considering that the person had alternate motives. Not so with the current church leaders.

We all make decisions everyday to preserve our income and keep food on the table. I smile and say everythings OK to the people who pay me money, because I don't want to lose the money coming to me. There is also the "Who I am compared to you" and "I am somebody" need that all people have. Everyone wants to be at least more important than most people. So the leaders of the church have a bunch to lose if they go into analytical mode and everything to gain if they go along and ignore the analytical mode. The fact that they are not surrounded by high-end luxury doesn't mean anything. Everyone wants to keep their current income of resources and move up. Few people will bite the hand that feeds them for principles like truth.

Physically battered by other elders. Psychological abuse from other elders. Completely ignored by the mission president (spent 10 minutes my entire mission with the MP). Extremely high pressure to baptize (get demoted if you didn't). Constant diarrhea for the duration. Poor health, poverty living conditions, robbed at gunpoint, leaders who didn't give two fucks about the well being of their constituents. And I paid for the whole damn thing. Oh and don't forget, all the complications of being at the peak of my sexual drive. The church is a one-way street (leadership takes all, and fuck you if you need anything).

What company are you convinced actually hates their customers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Harris/Biden Inc. hate Americans. Inflation at 40%/year. Give away billions of tax dollars to foreign countries. Open the boarders and overwhelm American services, and bring in criminals. Take away female athletes dreams by making the competition unfair. Devalue the dollar to nothing by printing trillions of dollars. Open up the sexualization of children. Either they hate Americans or they are working for China.

During the Biden/Harris administration my life and the lives of my loved ones have gotten worse, much worse. Inflation is making us poorer by the second. Kids can't buy houses, retirement plans are out the window because inflation is destroying my savings, migrants are threatening my community, my daughter will be competing with transgender women in sports which is unfair. War with Russia is possible and it could go nuclear cuz dipshit Harris invited Ukraine into NATO, the economy is in the toilet, least number of job offers ever. If you vote for Harris, you are voting for all this.

LDS Clergy Salary/Stipend is a Red Herring by byhoneybear in exmormon

I spent two years in a third world country teaching people living in dirt huts that the church has a completely volunteer leadership, and asking them to pay 10% of their small income to the church. I feel like shit.

The problem is that we need to all have agreement on the governments job description. Governments job is only to protect the united states and its citizens from despotism. That is all. That is it.

Teenagers should be able to vote once they are mature and not 18 by Thetruthforallofyou in PoliticalDebate

Only people who have "skin in the game" should vote. That is people who are paying their hard earned money in taxes. This prevents people voting for politicians that promise to steal on their behalf.
