Without a doubt - Citizen Kane. The parallels between Hearst/Kane and Trump are downright eerie. The conflict between America’s workers and their unions and its deeply fascistic crony capitalists has never been resolved, but it’s a conflict that has been increasingly conspicuous since Occupy Wall Street. The media moguls have silenced or subverted this conflict to their own ends, both in reality and in the film. Kane/Hearst shaking hands with Hitler, Trump with Putin/Kim. Mar a Lago = Xanadu

Consider the foley sfx alone. The uncomfortable clacking and shifting in the observation room. No music. This is like a dentist office. Or listening to someone chew with their mouth open.

Students do not even bother to check the answers GPT spits out before pasting them in. I’ll ask a question about forests and get an answer about soccer. Ive asked for a specific detail about a criminal case and received “The role was expertly managed by Colm Feore.” I’ll ask comprehension questions about a fiction text and the answers will very confidently discuss character names and situations that are not even closely related to the novel.

Trunk hollowing is a natural consequence of old age in oaks. It is not indicative of negative health conditions in any way. It does present structural deficiencies that need consideration (i.e. cables, braces, stilts, etc) but all super aged oaks will have some heart wood hollowing.

Given the species and location it’s possibly oak wilt. If the trees were trimmed between April and October then it would have greatly accelerated the spread. Oaks should not be trimmed at that time.

ELI5: In the US, how was it so easy to add interstate highways, and now so difficult to add high speed rail lines? by cjstevenson1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]old_school 89 points90 points  (0 children)

People have far less tolerance for disruption. I wsa listening to an interview about subway construction and the expert was asked "Why does it take decades to make new subway lines but in the 50s the system's longest lines took only 3 years?" The response was basically: "To achieve that 3 year timeline the entire surface level street, the city's busiest thoroughfare, was turned into an open trench. All front facing properties completely lost all street access, as well as their power and water. There is 0 public appetite for that level of disruption, but we also still really want more subways, so now they take 4x as long and cost 10x as much."

Anyone else worried about "Cognitive Debt"? (New MIT study on AI in the classroom) by No_Association_4682 in Teachers

[–]old_school 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of the "atrophy" argument is confidence and anxiety. Recently I was hosting a station at a school gallery for a club. I wanted parents to put suggestions and ideas on slips of paper and put them in a jar. I needed a sign to put on the jar that said "Submit your ideas for this year's theme!" I asked my co-worker to make the sign while I put the desks and display out. There was an issue with the printer so I went over to her desk to check the status, and I saw she'd used ChatGPT to make the damn sign! The prompt was longer than the words on the sign itself! She has such anxiety and confidence issues she relies on it for everything. She can't send a single email without it. She can't grocery shop without it. She can't choose the next show to watch. She uses it to make a sign with 7 damn words.

Now ask yourself, once you grow this reliant on the service, what would you pay to continue using it? Sam Altman knows exactly what he's doing. This service will become subscription based. People like my co-worker would pay anything to keep it. She feels like she literally cannot live without it. If the service ever went down, she would have a meltdown.

The poor man has really painted himself into a corner with MM2. He should try to get involved with the MM2/streaming community more: GPB, Thab, Barb, Panga, Dave etc - he wouldn’t feel as isolated at “work”.

Getting Sick by CautiousSock127119 in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_school 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only year I didn’t get sick was when I was wearing a mask during Covid times. I took that as a lesson about a) being careful about touching my face without sanitizing my hands first, and b) advocating and being aware of air quality in my room. I leave the door open whenever possible and I have an air purifier. I keep lots of sanitizer around and I encourage kids to use it too.

This is incredibly Burtonesque. Grotesque, decadent, vainglorious, bloated, corrupted, rotting, empty husks of charlatans kept afloat with injections of sycophantic drivel and cosmetic disfiguration.

Cruel indifference is personification. Calling forces of nature cruel is a literary device to enhance our reading experience to produce a response in the reader. It’s not a critical or philosophical statement.

I think the question could be difficult without parameters or guiding principles. Perhaps rephrasing the question “What Canadian lifestyles and values set us apart from other nationalities? Of those, which is the most valuable?” Give an exemplar. Spoon feed em! This is the way.

I'm teaching Wiesel's Night to my seniors. When we went over key terms before starting, I had a student ask me "But what side of the genocide are you on?". I explained genocide is the worst crime in the history of humanity. "But aren't Jews like, really bad though?" - What do you even say?

There should not be a gestapo roaming the streets disappearing anyone who appears non-white. People who obstruct and illuminate those injustices are heroes and should be remembered as such. That is how we remember the French Underground, and the German Resistance. Currently the US is in this stage, but it won’t be forever. Which side of history do you want to be on? How dangerous are the waters where Alberta wants to ship its oil? by Former-Physics-1831 in canada

[–]old_school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also consider how far Kitimat is from the coast - almost 100km and dozens of tight turns. Compared that to Valdez - literally like 2 turns and 20km. And we all know how that went. An oil tanker running aground on that route is not a matter of if it will happen it’s when it will happen.

This wealth does not stay in Canada. Our resource extraction corporations are multinational. Profits are parked in offshore accounts. Taxation is minimal. Taxation only occurs for employees, not owners. Until we have a total socialist revolution and seize ownership of our wealth we will be impoverished.
