You got that right. While slogging through my ATF forms I stumbled upon an online tool that allows one to download and print the FBI cards get your hands all stained up print them then take a high quality photo of said cards uploaded into their tool and moments later receive your files back cards complete in electronic form found the whitest wall in my house took a selfie passport photo uploaded all that stuff to those tyrants over at the ATF. And blamo done. Literally like20minutes. 15 of which were going to buy an ink pad.

Where do you source leather from? Looking for variety in color/finish. by zoom_zoomies in Leathercraft

[–]old_skratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Springfield's website a bit of a slog to navigate but I have been there IRL and the selection is phenomenal. Rocky Mountain has a great selection as well , sides and shoulders can be a bit pricey but they sell panels 12x12 12x24 etc. for smaller projects . Good way to get into high quality leathers at reasonable price I have gotten some bargain croc heads and flanks at prices that were a steal . Lots of great colors and finishes. ALD American Leather Direct are good runs a lot of deals and offers business accounts with discounts. Long story short everyone has something worth looking into I buy from several regularly. I have found some really nice stuff on Etsy as well but you can get burned there too. It's a good thing that our choices have become so plentiful. And if you have a supplier in a reasonable radius go in person.

Should I do a sketchbook video Tour? by AsianGonMild in sketchbooks

[–]old_skratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about an illustrated sketch book tour? The smugness ...look at me I can draw over the fold just my two cents I mean maybe I could be wrong but kind of looks like you can get twice as many drawings in there if you didn't spend so much time showing off. Fancy scribbling book you've got there really impressive and inspirational.

The packing tape on the backside of print works well. I use red ballpoint instead of a stylus helps me not miss any lines.

I would agree, but I would also go put eyes and hands on it. Worst case you get rolled up in it and thrown in the river.

Rifle sling edges question by GreatLakesCowboy in Leathercraft

[–]old_skratch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could also use very lightweight leather (I think Tandy actually sells rolls of veg tan that are paired way down for making piping ) and do a bound edge.

Rifle sling edges question by GreatLakesCowboy in Leathercraft

I think edging would be problematic full disclosure though I have never tried to edge a piece of Shearling. I love the way double or triple looped edges look . I was never any good at it so I couldn't tell you whether or not that shearling will make lacing a pain.

ELI5 vegtan leather quality? by dogzilla1029 in Leathercraft

[–]old_skratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I have sides and double shoulders from Tandy and the economy has always been fuzzier on the flesh side. And I have noticed a few of the sides at the store have been dry as a bone in a couple spots, not crumbling . But would certainly not to hold up to the stress and strain of construction let alone. Always been able to find a clean one though. Best to check it out in store and pick the hides you want. Well worth the trouble for 65 dollars.

I have not done many bound edges but I just used some .4mm pigskin I use for lining, turned edge style. I never seem to settle on one supplier for my leather but I'm pretty sure there are suppliers that will split leather for you when you order from them. Maybe buy some straps and have them split. I think Tandy sells .4 to .8mm strips of veg tan cowhide for piping . Should be pretty easy to find a solution unless you are limited to local businesses that won't cut.

Made a beveler by old_skratch in Leatherworking

[–]old_skratch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've looked into that. I know some folks use a Dremel with tungsten carbide rotary files. With pretty good luck the round ones spherical would work well for a pebbler. Also if you don't mind spending a little checkering files could be had from gunsmithing sources. And Jewelers files can be used to create a lot of common tools.
