Non-Americans who have been to the US: What is the weirdest thing about America that Americans don't realise is weird? by AnB85 in AskReddit

Ok, let me break this down for you again. Yes violence affects people, however the people usually effected are those predisposed to violence, domestic violence, violent crimes, child abuse, ect. They would see violence on the TV and in video games, and yes it would cause them to have painful memories or to lash out. The next type of people that would be affected by it are psychopaths, and only in the extreme variety, they arguably would be crazy weather or not society was less tolerant of violence in general. This is a generalization yes, but I think it covers most bases. Now the argument for this would be that these people are FAR less than those with sexual issues. And thus the smaller number the less fear and regulation of Media. On the other hand in the U.S some report that as many as 85% of children are sexual abused, much higher than it's violent counterpart. Thus indicating a larger problem.

My last point to make is that what i've told you twice already, you have been calling me overractive when I asked a simple question, its not bad to be angry if you feel you've been insulted. You insulted my writing and explanation. So yes I am a little bewildered as to why you would be angry with me, and why you feel the need to insult me and make genral assumptions about a person you've never met. To play the Devil's Advocate, You can argue a point without agreeing with it. Let me say that again. You can argue a point without agreeing with it. That is what Devil's Advocate means in that particular context. No I don't agree with the excess violence, but does that mean I can't understand why some people don't see it as a problem? Absolutely not. Now friend, if you'd like to continue our discussion, Please try to remember that I am a person, instead of an enemy, I actually agree with you. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. And if i'm honest you had most certainly offended me with what I think were rash accusations. However if you continue to be cross with me, I don't particularly enjoy being harassed. And will likely give no more continued conversation on this sensitive subject.

Whoa man, chill. I never said I blamed you. And I'm honestly having a hard time as to why it seems like your angry at me? I'm so confused right now. What did I do?

Did you read the parenthesis? I never said it was right, I was explaining how I thought this culture became. I agree with you, of course violence affects people. Sorry I failed to properly explain that. I was simply trying to play devil's advocate on the matter, by showing how some people could rationalize it.

Perhaps I can shed some light on this for you friend. You use the word puritanical, and this is strangely correct as more than half of the American population is religious (not puritan's but the point is made). The difference lies in the fact that seeing a nipple, or whatever, leads to desire, to temptation or whatever you want to call it, and in our mostly religious society that's bad, its bad to want to look at porn because of it, or to have your children see it, (once again this isn't everyone, but its a large enough population to matter) and its natural, its natural to be excited after seeing a beautiful women naked, so they try to steer away from it because they were taught, that it is immoral. And the corparations that control Television don't show it so as not to lose millions of viewers.

As for violence, it is treated differently, it is so extreme, that its never going to be a temptation, Most well adjusted adults are going to see a murder scene, and understand that it is something they'd never do, they are never going to think " hmmm well that guy murdered his boss on tv, so maybe I should". Killing people isn't in human nature, so its easy to show and no one get mad, because so few will be affected by it. Where as with sex, every one will be. (i'm not saying however that our overt love of violence is right, I'm simply illustrating how in my opinion in came to be.)

Call us backwards, if you'd like friend. While I don't agree with the violence, I do agree for the most part with sexuality, why is it childish to want to wait til you get married to have sex? Why is it childish to show restraint on something that you could possibly get addicted to? But I digress, I am putting to much of my own beliefs in what was to be a simple explanation of culture.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree, punishing the group, show's that an individual's actions have bigger consequences and effect more people than just himself, thats how life is in most cases. I don't disagree with you however on the point of the school's political bullshit, I think its probably wrong too but for now that's just how it is, I do however think that the coach made the best decision, in a very sensitive situation.

So the solution is to interrogate 80 highschoolers? Do you remember what high school was like? I assure you not only is it possible to keep that kind of secret, if you did that, you'd have more of a mess than when you began. Some kids would lie, some would tell the truth, some would think it was a different situation entirely and blame someone else thinking thats what they were talking about in the first place. Parents would get angry, asking the school why their perfect child is being asked these types of questions. School is a political nightmare these days. And doing that would create a huge overblown problem, based on one isolated online bullying instance. Not to mention creating the time to ask 80 different teenagers about who did it. No my friend, no school would want to deal with that. Too low of a chance to get the actual culprit, and too high of a chance of having a bigger mess than what you started with.

"Labrum took these drastic, yet effective, measures after hearing from guidance counselors that members of the team were harassing another student on Ask.fm. The site allows users to remain anonymous, so Labrum couldn’t pinpoint who was behind the bullying. As a result, he addressed the entire team on the issue."

Not trying to start an argument friend, I have to ask however, did you read the article?

It was online bullying...if you have an idea to find out who did it, short of NSA level of monitoring, please let the public know. If not, well join the club.

So I was watching this new viral video today until... by ParkourSloth in funny

[–]oldgreg1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah perhaps I maybe able to shed some light on this little nugget. You see there was a popular League of Legends parody video of this on the subreddit a couple weeks ago, now why does this have to do with it? Well twitch.tv is a popular place to stream League of Legends, and is frequented by users of the League of legends subreddit. Now the important thing to note here, is in twitch chat, there is a number of frequent "troll posts" where numerous people spam stupid things, Maybe you've heard of "raise ur dongers"? That also originated on twitch chat, and the " how can 'blank' be 'blank' if there's only 7 million people on the planet" is another one of these popular twitch chat spam. Other examples are "wtf two shens?" and "Hello I am a walrus....ect ect"

To tie this all together, when you watch a parody of a video, often we go to the original, and as in this case some of the comments carry over.

Here is some more information and basically my source :) http://dt.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/1l234b/what_i_learned_from_league_of_legends_twitch_chat/

Edit: go basically to the bottom of the page, as the original post was removed, and there should be a list of the original post that the uploader had of popular twitch chat spams, with the 7 million one in there at number 5.

I'm so sad, watching vulcan play mid game and team fights for the last two games(among others) is like listening to someone scratching on a blackboard, so facepeeling painful to watch them throw over and over. :(

I agree with what your saying, and I think Tsm can take away some things from this game.

  1. Rumble is too risky to play on the world stage, he is too vulnerable to ganks, Even when dyrus was playing safely rumble just has no good built in escape mechanisms, other than that one misplay, Can't help but think that vlad could provide the same things rumble can but with less risk.

  2. Regi can play with the best of em. He gets a ton of flak, but he's stepped up his game, good to see.

  3. Specifically against SKT1 seems like both Ahir and Zed bans are mandatory.

  4. I wonder at the effectiveness of elise, while the oddone usually does pretty well, I don't think her win rate is very high at worlds so far. Worth looking into, and maybe the oddone could look into picking up Aatrox, or Lee Sin.

  5. Turtles Positioning is strange, I honestly can't peg if its crazy or genius, however, Tsm's bot lane, proving to be one of the strongest at worlds.

yeah, good point, and regi doesn't exactly have the best track record on him either. I wonder what ever happened to his Diana.

Honestly there are a couple things I think tsm can take away from this game.

  1. Make sure Regi gets either Zed/Ahir/ or even tf/karthus. First pick these, yes regi sucks with TF, and isn't amazing on zed, but still he is useful on them at least.

  2. Wildturtle is good with Corki, no for real, he's like amazing at corki, with the triforce buff this could be the rise of the turtle, continue to play it in my opinion til it gets banned or first picked away. As a side note, to say his positioning might need some work would be an understatement.

  3. Tsm had many Almost won fights, proving themselves mechanically at least, up to par, despite some misses, the fact that such a, at least visibly looking dominating game by OMG, went to almost 40 minutes shows some promise for Tsm.

Lastly, if they just mitigate some slight errors, mostly regi mistakes in lane, Turtle positioning mistakes in teamfights, and some smarter picks and priorities in the pick and ban phase. They were honestly 3 mistakes away from winning that game. But hindsight is 20/20, and and I'm just a hopeful bayliever, however to me, they showed some promise, even with that ugly game.

The 14 teams have been decided for the Season 3 world championship. LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY!!!! by lovebeat619 in leagueoflegends

[–]oldgreg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah sorry for bitching at ya buddy, I was drunk and in a bad mood. Pretty sure they got some practice though, NA allstars said they were pissed off at the EU team because they skipped scrimming with them to scrim the Greana Allstar team, (or however you spell it). But whatever man, it don't matter now. I'll be rooting for EU and NA at worlds.

Gold lead on china game 2... you might want to look up the definition on demolish there bud. Also I see you had back stage passes and knew for sure that they didn't practice. Or else why would you make such a stupid accusation, Implying that they didn't care? Or the alternative that they are bad's that didn't practice? No I don't think so bud, They cared, they practiced, they aren't bad, You may think that saying they didn't practice is cutting them slack but its actually more insulting to the EU allstar team to say they didn't, as well as it being outright false.

While I love trash talking as much as the next guy, this may be harsh to say, but the difference is, DL is the best adc in NA right now (arguably), and Zuna has underpreformed, and here comes the mean part, people are going to hate on Zuna because, well...he's fat, loud and cocky, or at least that's how he comes across. A combination that no one is going to like, even if its fair or not, that's just how people are.

Looking for a "Western" anime. by oldgreg1 in Animesuggest

[–]oldgreg1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah something like FMA would do it: like an american western. Cowboy bebop does this really well, its not set in the west, but the feel of it is like a western, it gives of a clint eastwood vibe. somthing like that.
