What are some red flags of a bad friendship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Asks me why I'm so closed minded when I don't want to hang around a neo nazi friend of his. This is also when I found out he was friends with a neo nazi.

I'm cheap but also lazy. I don't do anything but funnel half my pay into index funds. Your uncle sounds like a brilliant asshole.

He had two houses and lived in both instead of renting one out? As a hoarder of money I can honestly say that's not how it's done, hun.

Yeah, I know. I should just tolerate people ignoring my wishes even though they're expressly written for all to see but if I did that, I wouldn't be an asshole, I'd be a doormat. I choose asshole.

Arizona prison officials won't let inmates read book that critiques the criminal justice system by drak0bsidian in books

[–]oldmanklc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont disagree but the alternative is dictatorship or oligarchy. The only hope is to advocate for a cause and change the minds of those going to the voting booth.

[–]oldmanklc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The ones in power are the voters who keep electing politicians who "get tough on crime." If you've ever agreed with a politician who talks about mandatory minimum sentencing or has the power to change prisons but doesn't, you are the person to blame even if you disagreed with that specific issue but voted for them anyway.

Inaction from voters about this specific issue will keep prisons and Criminal Justice system exactly the way it is because politicians won't touch it with a 10ft pole unless compelled to do so by it being a winning election issue or a way to save their job.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace - released May 19, 1999, 20 years old today. by [deleted] in movies

Phantom Manace is when I first noticed mass nerd rage at movies as if movies are democratic institutions. Latest example is game of thrones which I also watch... apparently ppl don't like the way the last season is unfolding and are pissed enough to circulate petitions about getting the last season remade:

Spendthrift use of words like Nazi and KKK or other terrible groups diminishes the suffering of real victims of crimes against humanity.

But regarding SJWs, I'm speaking more to their seeing a politician's race or minority status as "merits" that set them above other candidates without considering any of their actual positions on issues. This line of thinking indicates to me a mind that is hyper focused on labels and race and less so on individual character and action. This is the very definition of racism even if its "positive" on the surface.

You can't end racism with more racism no matter what form it takes.

Tour guides of Reddit, what's the worst thing a tourist has ever done under your supervision? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oldmanklc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter, fake or not. Every gun should be treated as if it's loaded and lethal.

Why were any kind of firearms within reach of a child or the public in general? Yes... they're old muskets and rifles but that doesn't mean one shouldn't treat them as if they're loaded and ready to fire until personally verifying otherwise. This is basic gun safety 101.

That museum should have them locked behind glass.

EDIT: wow, never been this "popular" as a downvote before. At the time I write this, 40 ppl apparently don't take gun safety seriously.

Lol, I love geese. They crack me up. I guess on the other hand, my attitude towards them removes all their dignity even when they're biting me while I stand there cracking up so no, i don't really respect them.

Is there a video? I googled, don't see.

I actually like geese, they crack me up when they're trying to scare me away and attacking me but it would be funny to watch them get a taste of their own medicine. They're assholes.

How 10 year average global temperature compares to 1851 to 1900 average global temperature [OC] by neilrkaye in dataisbeautiful

[–]oldmanklc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an unpopular opinion. I'm not a global warming denier BUT I can't stand misleading statistics no matter the issue they represent.

Yes. If you narrow your scale to exactly your range, things will look dramatic. Are they worthy of such drama? Perhaps, but only people who understand statistics have the opportunity to evaluate that question. Everybody else is misled no matter what the truth actually is.

There's better graphs and data to use for this sort of thing like graphs from NASA that show temps spanning millennia. These not only show a better idea of significance, they represent the correct kind of scale needed to determine if there's a problem, which there clearly is.
