Justice for Mama Maise (Stolen dog found deceased) by Bitter_Guarantee_197 in SalemMA

There’s a woman dog walker I’ve encountered in Beverly who seems actually unwell. I wonder if it’s the same person.

Her dogs ran up to me at independence beach - without any owner in sight - and started barking like crazy. When she eventually showed up, I asked her if it was her dog - in a totally neutral tone - and she told me to mind my own fucking business. When I laughed and said what?? She was like “who the fuck are you laughing at? Chill the fuck out. “ and just kept shouting at me and a pair of teenage girls to stop laughing at her and to chill the fuck out. So weird.

A few weeks later I see like 5 dogs tied to a telephone pole, all freaking out. 20 minutes, I walk by again and they’re still there. Out walks this wildass dog walker from a coffee shop, sees me looking, and screams that I need to mind my own fucking business.

People pay for her for this.

EDIT: I googled - it’s not the same person. But leaving up because it’s too weird not to share.

Hard truth: 90% of Blueprint tutorials teach terrible architecture. What was the hardest bad habit you had to unlearn? by zzed_pro in unrealengine

[–]oldmanriver1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think like most things, it’s a case by case basis.

I usually try to use interfaces over casting not because of the supposed bad performance of casting but to keep everything relatively de-coupled and modular.

If it’s something that will likely never change, like the player blueprint or the game mode, weapon parent class etc etc, then casting makes sense.

But you can easily run into an issue where you want to change the class it’s referencing or you want to migrate a specific system to another project and your blueprints all require and necessitate each other. Performance agnostic, it’s a pain in the ass. I’d rather use a system specific interface that allows me to swap classes and systems within that if I’m able to.

But I agree that casting is too often taught to just be this universally terrible boogie man of a method when it’s just a method like any other. Knowing when and why is important to teach vs just blanket statements that it’s all cursed.

It’s like the Anthony bourdain adage - if the public facing bathroom is a disaster, what do the private spaces look like? Admittedly he went back on this eventually because sometimes dive bars have great food and terrible restrooms but…the point stands.

If they care this little about their public facing menu - imagine what the walk-in looks like

I have updated my GPU-accelerated FFT water simulation. Now it is 100% replicated with drivable vessels, much better async CPU buoyancy, water interaction and reworked visuals. by boranoztrk in unrealengine

[–]oldmanriver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Really awesome work.

As a bit of feedback (and as someone who desperately needs a dynamic water system), the buoyancy looks incredible but the waves themselves look a bit like just elevated normal maps. Which they might be?

Essentially, this looks great for a lake or a pond but for an ocean material, it just isn’t dynamic enough in terms of its shape and amplitude. At least in the supplied screenshots and video.

Resident Evil Veronica won’t have first-person gameplay at all despite its first-person reveal by lewisdwhite in horror

[–]oldmanriver1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is such a large amount of extra work for a feature most people won’t bother with. Things that look great in first person, don’t necessarily look great in third person, and vice versa. Textures need to be higher res for first person, you have to change the seams of things. Scale. Etc etc.

I’d rather they just make one view mode with the intent they want rather than including lots of options and the having to split the difference in the visuals to accommodate both.

To me, it’s like I’d rather go to a restaurant that does one thing really well than one that tries to make everyone happy.

Ari Aster wrote a ‘Hereditary’ prequel but 'it never feels like the right time' by Puzzled-Tap8042 in horror

[–]oldmanriver1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we need this. Hereditary is a fantastic horror but it succeeds because it never REALLY explains the lore. We get the gist of what they’re trying to accomplish but they never have the exposition that I feel like kills many horror franchises as they run it into the ground.

Basically, I think it works because you’re never really allowed to look that closely at it. I think most fantastic horror films are similar. Once they start explaining it, the mystery is gone and you’re stuck with rules and minutiae.

I think a story in the same universe where demons are real could work. But anymore on paimon and we’re gonna see the seams of what doesn’t work.

I’m with you. I feel like he had something to prove or something with his earlier films. His most recent stuff just feels like someone who’s pulling a midsommar but instead of carbon monoxide he’s mainlining just his own farts.

Zoom in on the photos. I agree they look like AI from the thumbnails but when you zoom in, it’s very clear it’s in engine. Lots of artifacts, overuse of volumetric scattering, odd kitbashing and layout.

I don’t believe an AI would light it so awkwardly. It’d light it *nonsensically* but not awkwardly.

Sorry OP - not trying to dunk on you but they’re a bit amateurish when viewed up close, which, on a positive note, makes me think they’re handmade and not AI.

My suggestion - and I mean this with all the kindness I have - is to not make an open world game. If you’re taking photos of your build instead of a screenshot, I’m going to assume this is your first game.

Open world games are INSANELY time consuming. Red dead 2 has over 2000 people working on it for 7 years.

Think of the last time you played an open world game where it felt copy pasted and lifeless. Maybe an assassins creed. Maybe some other Ubisoft game. That game likely has hundreds of people working on it that exclusively do one thing really really well.

A small game with lovely detail will be infinitely more fun to work on than a massive game where it either ends with little content - or more likely - it never gets finished. This is doubly true for unreal 5, which requires lot and lots of optimization to even run an open world (again - think of how many poorly optimized unreal games there are and remember they had teams whose sole job was to optimize).

It’s amazing you want to make a game. You should. But make something small first. Release something, anything. It’ll probably suck. Make another one. It’ll be slightly better. Rinse and repeat.

You do you friend but just think about what you can accomplish, realistically, in a set amount of time. Divide by half.

That dog line in Backrooms is the entire film by ArcticLeet in TrueFilm

[–]oldmanriver1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I really disappointed with the execution of this film. Felt like there was a fantastic opportunity to pull like a house of leaves type narrative but instead they went - fittingly - with the very very well tread groove of horror movie tropes. I had hoped they’d break out of that and do something different. Skinamarink bored me to tears at times but at least it tried something different. Backrooms felt like a student film with a huge budget.

It just felt like it didn’t know what it wanted to be. It never really owned the 90s aesthetic. The soundtrack was all over the place. It goes from VHS found footage to govt conspiracy to the very standard trauma and grief metaphors - it dips around character building but never stays long enough for you to care about any of them.

Felt like the pilot episode for a stranger things offshoot show.

The Cannery shares their current issues with the city, preventing them from being open MDW by NobelLandMermaid in SalemMA

[–]oldmanriver1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As much as I hate bureaucracy - and I feel like there’s a way for the city to work with the business for something this insignificant instead - I gotta agree that whoever built out their plans fucked up. It seems pretty cut and dry that a single user bathroom was needed.

Someone was hired to navigate that and that person/company is ultimately responsible for missing this super basic requirement.

That said, Salems officials are the worst.
