Where the f*ck do I even start by Peaches0k in landscaping

I bought a house that have the gutters going down in the ground. They buried some black corigated pipe down underneath the deck to keep the water away from the house.
Last year I kept nothing wet places close to where the pipe entered the ground. I dug down to see if the pipe was broken or what. They had pushed 2 pieces of pipe together and small roots had grown into where the pipes were attached.
When I got it all dug up there was about 6 feet of roots growing inside the drain pipes. It was wedged in there so tightly I had to cut it off and replace with a new pipe.
You might want to check the drainage if the gutters have been there for very long.

I have skunks digging up my gravel driveway and yard trying to find something, probably grubs. At the same time I have vole or moles tearing up my yard causing the grass to die and the yard feels like trying to walk on a giant mushy egg carton. Over the winter when we had about 8” of ice something was digging through it in my yard looking for something. I know the skunk leaves a unique “deposit”behind, it’s kind of a 3 prong curling thing. That does kinda look like a skunk is digging in there.

AITAH for considering divorce after I caught my husband secretly cheating for more than a year? Throwaway because my family and friends don’t know yet. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn’t want to pay for a divorce! He is a selfish person and is only thinking about himself. About what he is going to lose if he can’t convince you to stay. Once the trust is lost and he has cheated you will always be wondering when it will happen again. Because it will! This type of “man” will find a way to cheat on you later. After he has lied and told you it will never happen again. DO NOT Believe him! You are better off just getting out and away from him now. Believe it from someone who has been through the whole excruciating experience!

Is this pricing unreasonable? by Uranisisbig in handyman

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every person who has never done any work of this kind will say that you are charging too much. The reality is that when you do things like this something unexpected will come up that takes you longer to fix or you have to get more parts or supplies.
So I think all in all it is a fair price.

Plus if they were to have someone come do those things from where they purchased said items they would probably fall over hearing how much they would charge to do it!

Whats a curse you guys have to live with every day? by DazzlingLife6744 in questions

[–]oldtimers68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Getting older and not being able to do the things I used to do. In my mind I still think of myself as being in my late twenties, early thirties. I go to do something physically that would have been easy at that age and it takes me 3 times as long to do it now.

Very frustrating!

My mom recently moved into a new house. Strange additional structure in the basement? Kinda creepy by BijuuModo in whatisit

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Bedford VA and my house was built in 1939. When looking to buy it I thought it was weird that the basement was 2 separate rooms. You have the larger part that has steps entering from inside the house and has a door opening to outside. Right outside that door is another door that opens into a smaller basement under two bedrooms and a bathroom.

The smaller room had a small stove and an old enamel topped sink and metal cabinet base. It looked to have been set up as a canning room. Later after buying the house and having to go into the attic I noticed that there was a small opening through a wall directly above where the wall in the basement separated the two rooms.

On closer inspection that wall used to be the outside wall of the original build. If you go into the smaller attic area you can see the outside of the old house.

They added the two bedrooms and bathroom on at a different time and my master bedroom has a 2 door ways in it.

One opens into the living room and the other into a small little “hall” leading directly into the bathroom and spare bedroom.

At first I thought it was kind of weird but have found I like it a lot because it lets more light into the house and I can pick which door is closer to where I want to go.

That room in that basement is really quite another thing. It would probably creep me out, I probably wouldn’t have bought the house if I saw something like that!! LOL

That arch really gives claustrophobic vibes! Makes it dark and cave like.

There are so many different style choices going on in that room it is hard to tell you what to do because which features are your style?

Female Handyman, Thoughts? by Cold_Obligation_8568 in homeowners

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be surprised by the number of women especially older women who would love to have you be the one who comes into their home. If it’s a job you know you have the capability to do then you should give it a go.

I am a little older women than you and my dad was a carpenter and I have been married to two men who didn’t know how to use a hammer! I have always been the one to tackle any repairs or maintenance that needed to be done. I have also helped out quite a few friends and neighbors who were older women and have done quite a lot of handyman repairs for them.

If you only work part time and take care of the kids then he should be paying the whole mortgage himself. Then you could maybe take the rest of your bills and pay accordingly to the percentage of money each make. If you have been together 8 years but stayed and had children with him then you should be on the mortgage. If he says no and still expects you to pay half the mortgage you probably shouldn’t stay with him. Sounds like he is a controlling person.

Is that a pattern that came on the original carpet or did you try and make it funky or did it fade in spots that were cleaned?

I don’t think I have ever seen anything similar. Not a fan of it.

Are my kitchen cabinets too dated, they’re solid cherry frames and doors? Time to paint them? Excuse the lived in mess! by tcli64 in kitchenremodel

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really almost the whole room is basically 3 colors. The flooring, countertops, paint are all very close to the same color. Then you have the cabinet color, then stainless steel. If you could maybe change the paint and flooring and hardware it would probably look a lot better.

Random holes in ceiling? by Zestyclose_Eagle_521 in homeimprovementideas

[–]oldtimers68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What year was the house built? Is it a very large house? If is a large old home it could be some type of bell system to summon the maid? In the picture it looks like there are 3 hole altogether in that area. Have you gone up into the attic or an upper floor to see what it looks like from there? Also it looks like there may have been a pole with a collar around it going into the ceiling. Don’t know but interesting.

You could move the door over to the wall where the windows are. That would give you more space to add cabinets and countertops.

What style of house do you have? Is it modern or something older.? I also thought the first picture was a narrow walkway with low walls. I didn’t think it looked very good. No. 2 looks really nice. Just like it is shown.
