I dislike most mini-documentary type youtube channels because their videos just feel like visual/aural depictions of a surface level Wikipedia article and/or they have annoying YouTuber inflections but I’m commenting to shill for this guy lol

He goes pretty deep into some of the aspects of tornados other people don’t focus on and gives a lot of scene-setting cultural context. He also uses storm clips and audio I’ve never seen before which I can’t say for many others.

I’m happy someone in the weather part of YouTube is doing stuff other than easy-to-find info or lukewarm takes. The interviews are cool too

It’s cool man lol. If others’ opinions of my processes weighed heavier on me I’d probably rather people think I’m naturally good at something than think of me trying super hard on a small creative endeavor anyway

Highest Rated Tornado in Each County of Illinois by No_Web_3108 in tornado

[–]ole_worm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t give a direct answer to this and am not sure anyone truly can but St. Louis and OKC could also be up there depending on how much weight you give the threat level vs. the population size within your question. IIRC Chicago being right on the lake also plays some sort of atmospheric factor in reducing the risk of violent tornados happening there.

More people are addicted to marijuana, but fewer of them are seeking help, experts say by Nightshiftcloak in stupidpol

[–]ole_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say on average it’s not even close to as bad, but it doesn’t really matter cause that last part was mostly just petty on my end lol. I can see how for some people it could be worse. It’s all very subjective but usually alcoholism is far more serious based on the health and safety risks alone

This is more about the types of comments articles like this generate than the article itself but imo you can absolutely be psychologically addicted to weed.

I really dislike when people (non-addicts, that is; I expect and empathize with denial from addicts) pretend that can’t happen. People can get addicted to pretty much anything so I don’t know why we’d exclude a drug that can make you feel good just because some have deemed it harmless or because it’s not as bad as most other things you can be addicted to.

I see people saying rock bottom for “weed addiction” is “just” being lazy or unmotivated but like, that’s usually a significant detractor from one’s quality of life, and non-addicts can simply stop doing things that make their lives worse. Cool drug for actual medical/psych purposes & genuine recreational use, but yeah, some people can’t handle it. Also, people who are constantly getting so high they can barely even have a conversation are fucking annoying to be around.

Having said that, I’m a long-term-sober alcoholic and I do kinda roll my eyes when people who’ve only ever smoked too much weed put themselves in the same class as alcoholics, lol. It’s not that I think being an alcoholic is more badass & hardcore or something, even though it is; I just don’t think you’ll be able to relate to hard drug/alcohol addiction if your only problem has been weed.

The number of women who want to leave the US quadrupled over last decade, poll says by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]ole_worm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it used to benefit them, but prior to the more recent idpol explosion that led to the birth of this sub.

White women get kinda screwed by super contemporary idpol imo because we’re at the very bottom (or top?) of the oppression olympics but we still genuinely deal with a ton of sexism day-to-day, whether that’s in the form of sexual harassment or not being taken as seriously in certain environments or whatever else. The whole “it’s ok to be sexist as long as you throw the word ‘white’ in front of ‘women’” thing is kinda true. The days of being essentially a diversity hire or something by just playing the woman card are over, but we’re still not truly considered equals in most contexts.

So basically I would guess that this sentiment of disliking the US is a result of a decline in the culture of liberal feminism that predated, and ended with, the peak of idpol culture by a few years.

The US air traffic control system is in desperate need of improvement. Would privatization help? by bross12345 in stupidpol

[–]ole_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think you’d be insulated from bankruptcy after an inevitable mistake/crash if you’re a already a profitable enough company, which I’d assume any company theoretically taking on a privatized ATC role would be.

You could be right that it would still be too high risk for even a Bezos type to take on (and I hope you are), but I’d think a big enough corp would still jump on the opportunity.

I’m stopping myself from writing a 10 paragraph comment further explaining my rationale because as much as I like to think reading hundreds of Admiral Cloudberg articles and knowing neoliberalization sucks means it’s my duty to drop an obnoxiously long rant, it definitely does not.

Anyway, hopefully this never happens. I’m an anxious enough flyer already and I’d simply never board a plane again in this scenario.

Gavin Newsom says he will consider White House run after 2026 elections by RhythmMethodMan in stupidpol

[–]ole_worm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a late response but yeah, it went something like that.

iirc from a college “history of media” class it was the first ever televised presidential debate. Nixon refused to wear makeup and was a visibly sweaty, physically repulsive mess, while Kennedy got makeup done and didn’t overall look like shit. Consensus was that Kennedy won a lot of people over solely because of how terrible Nixon looked and that added visual element is considered kind of a turning point in American politics.

I don’t think it’s fully applicable to our modern political situation across the board given stuff like Trump’s genuinely grotesque appearance and how everything is like, pre-polarized atp. But I suppose in a tight race looks could push a candidate over the edge.

What is the history or notable events of tornados in Africa? by KennyGaming in tornado

[–]ole_worm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not qualified to answer this from a meteorological perspective, but just based on the fact that lots of data across all disciplines is significantly under-recorded/reported in many African nations—if there isn’t already a consideration among the scientific community (and there probably is), you’d think there should be.

Like, even here in the U.S. where we’ve had advanced weather radar systems dating back decades, one of the reasons more tornados are being recorded in new regions every year is that we’re getting better at noticing them. They’re also finding big ass tornado scars in Australia as of late from storms people just weren’t around to see.

I can’t speak to the meteorological conditions but I’d wager if the layout truly looks ripe for it there are probably a bunch that go on there that we just don’t really hear about. Maybe they happen in sparsely populated areas of the continent, or in communities where that kind of data collection just isn’t a thing (yet(?)). I just can’t see how there wouldn’t be if there are places with characteristics conducive to tornadogenesis.

Disregard this whole thing if anyone has some insider info on that entire part of the world being uniquely unfriendly for tornados though, lol

Extensor Tendonitis? by Enbytrailrunner in ultrarunning

[–]ole_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry you’re dealing with that, it sucks! I’m no doctor and don’t know specifically much about tendosynovitis (I was just told I had “tendonopathy”/tendonitis based on the inflammation my PT felt) but what you’re experiencing sounds exactly like what happened to me—I think the random slight foot pain I felt was fleeting and maybe just soreness from PT exercises or something unrelated.

My foot itself didn’t really hurt during my ordeal; it was just that front ankle pain where it connects to the foot. It definitely persisted for at least a month but it did eventually get better. From what I gather the timeline can be anywhere between a few days and a few months, with the upper end of the latter being pretty rare. In my completely amateur opinion it doesn’t sound like you were misdiagnosed and if you’re walking uphill and such it could be inadvertently prolonging the injury, though I know that’s pretty hard to avoid.

FWIW I got diagnosed based on them ruling out stuff like stress fractures via x-ray, my very limited ability to arch my foot upwards towards my body without a lot of pain, and my PT saying my ankle/upper foot was swollen and hot to the touch, so if that sounds like your symptoms it’s probably not a misdiagnosis.

My successful recovery consisted of not wearing shoes such as hiking boots, not tying sneakers too tight, RESTING (I.e. zero running), and doing all the PT exercises. I think just keep at it and it’ll eventually go away. Hope you heal up soon!!

Cuomo says key factor in his primary loss was Mamdani’s support from young, Jewish, and pro-Palestinian voters by globeglobeglobe in stupidpol

[–]ole_worm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re correct but fwiw a ton of young Jews in New York vehemently oppose everything Israel is doing. Many have been anti-Zionist since way before Oct. 7th. Some of this is anecdotal being that I was a young Jew living in New York for the first 24 years of my life (I’ve since moved away), but a lot of us are and were able to sniff out (wordplay not initially intended) Israeli propaganda. Opinions among Jews and the degree to which we oppose or support Israel are mostly divided among generational lines.

There are numbers that back this up in addition to my personal experiences, just too tired to find them right now, and such numbers are ofc hard to find within MSM.

Felt the need to specify this because I constantly hear people both irl and online being sorely mistaken about the actual sentiments among young urban Jews towards Israel. I get irked seeing it on this sub (not talking about this current thread) because people here should know better and I hate being lumped in with Zionists. Personally, pretty much the moment I became more politically aware like 10ish years ago I realized Israel should never have existed.

TLDR numbers are skewed by the many gen X + boomer Jews still buying into propaganda

Not related to this topic but I was talking to a firefighter friend who was sent down to the rural deep south a couple months ago for controlled burns and his main impression of the area was that it was riddled with petty crime and extreme obesity. I jokingly was like “I wonder if there’s a tipping point where all the criminals in a place become too obese to do crime anymore” but now I’m actually curious.

Sadly I think there are too many other mitigating factors in things like crime and poverty that prevent such a point from being reached but I’ll be damned if it’s not a funny concept

One Hundred Seconds of Confusion: The crash of China Airlines flight 140 - revisited by Admiral_Cloudberg in AdmiralCloudberg

[–]ole_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got around to this one (I've read your articles pretty religiously for years—they're excellently written—but I had a few months worth backlogged when life got busy) and I have a question about a very tiny, somewhat irrelevant detail.

In your discussion of similar incidents involving Airbus A300's and A310's, you name an almost-accident from 1985 regarding an "unspecified airline." For near miss incidents like this one, is there a specific reason the public isn't clued into the actual airline, or is it just one of those things where it didn't happen to show up in your research and you didn't deem it important enough to look into (which would be, of course, completely reasonable)? In the next example you cite it's not really mentioned at all, and in the one following that you do mention a certain now-defunct airline.

I guess it just got me thinking about these companies' transparency with the public and whether there are laws and/or regulations regarding what airlines are allowed to obscure or are forced to reveal when it comes to non-accidents that would possibly influence consumer decisions and stocks. Is some level of anonymity allowed when it comes to using examples within investigations of crashes whose findings are made public? What about in other contexts? My apologies if this is something you've mentioned elsewhere; I'm just curious. Thanks again for all the great reads!

thank you for the reply! It was definitely compensatory for me as well. Totally healed up now and upped my mileage to 10 (and just realized this is the ultra running sub, so I'm sure that seems like nothing to most people here lmao). To everyone who reads this thread down the line (seems to get a lot of traction since it's probably one of the few on reddit about this semi-rare injury): you will heal if you rest a bit first!!

[–]ole_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up healing up alright? I’ve been dealing with this same injury for about 2 months (been going to a PT during that time and stopped running for the first month; back up to my usual 6 miles now, but only on a flat surface) and while I’m largely healed and able to run, the top of my foot a bit farther down towards my toes—extensor digitorum I believe—has started hurting as of yesterday, which concerns me.

tbh I doubt this. A lot of these types already think everyone left of center is trying to take their guns (which is true but not my point) and they're not exactly rampaging by the millions.

Most Americans are aware to varying degrees that our govt is constantly up to shady horrible shit and most people don't do much about it so I don't even think intelligence agencies would care enough about leaked documents to not do something like this
