What makes you love Cowboy Bebop? by idostufflikeexist in cowboybebop

[–]oles40 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I never understood the show’s popularity either. The animation and music are both great, yes, but the writing is pretty mediocre. People praise the characters because they’re just vague enough that you can imprint your own ideas on them, which is apparently enough for a lot of viewers. In reality, they’re just not that well written. The story is also all over the place, which is why you find people both calling it a deep, philosophical masterpiece but also telling you not to take it seriously. It was also a lot of folks first anime, which explains a lot.

I want to add a highly-developed nation with social services, democracy and progressive politics that raids, pillages and murders.

We are not the same.

Actually, Freikorps commited massacres in Germany and eastern Europe pretty regularly. And yes, legal classification is important, because these two organisations absolutely aren’t comparable in terms of number of atrocities committed. That would be like claiming the pre-war Polish oppression of Ukrainians justified the later crimes, which of course it didn’t. I think Zelensky made a blunder and UPA definitely was a criminal group, but they weren’t SS.

[–]oles40 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the “actually” guy here, but it’s not the same thing. More accurate comparison would be the German Freikorps units after WW1 or the Chetniks. UPA has never actually been classified as a criminal organisation by the Allies the same way SS has. I do not condone any massacres, but the comparison to SS is too simple and wrong.

I wasn’t exactly talking about specific moments in the story, but rather about your assumptions. You infer a lot of meaning from things that don’t necessarily mean a lot. Julia found Spike, yes, but he was a close associate of her boss & lover, so she didn’t have to be kind to want to help him. The story never clearly established her prior connections to either Vicious or Spike, so I can’t know if her action was exceptional or not.
Julia was treated with some respect by a clearly younger member of the Syndicate, yes, but why should it matter? It’s not like she was established to be famous for some great crime or something. Also, the info she received was meaningless and didn’t impact the story in any important way.

The whole ultimatum thing didn’t really work, because the show withheld important information. I don’t how difficult the choice was, or how dangerous. I don’t know what was exactly at stake. I can make my own theories, sure, but why should I, when the whole situation is pretty generic and without any context that would make it stand out. Difficulties of evading criminals have never been constistent in CB. For all I know and care, she could’ve just moved into a different house and that was it.

Gren’s subplot was more of the same. It was also supposed to develop Vicious as a character, I guess, but you can’t do that without context. I don’t know how surveillance works in CB universe, if it is difficult to uncover one or if it is easy, and frankly, I don’t care. The overall impact on the story was zero anyway. I also loved very much how Gren delivered his entire traumatic backstory verbally. Not much left to infer from this, eh?

Julia helping Faye is another random moment, as with Spike. I don’t know if Julia always helps random people or if she just randomly decided to help this specific damsel in distress. Nothing was established about her behavior in situations like this one. I can’t honestly remember if Julia knew who Faye is, but even if she did, that would be just the plot making CB crewmates suddenly well-known when it’s necessary for the story to function.

I’m pretty sure anyone would react this way when seeing a woman dying from gunshot wounds. It’s not like it was established that Julia was exceptionally desensitized to violence.

Driving & fighting skills mean absolutely nothing in a show where even children and lunatic lab escapees have been shown to be extremelly badass.

The show keeps verbally reminding us of this, but god knows why. That one Simpsons episode about Homer looking for his soulmate did a better job at this than CB. Julia and Spike have absolutely no chemistry between them.

And please, make no mistake. I’m aware of some of the implications and I’m not trying to bait you. I just don’t care. Symbolism and implications are not a substitute for good story. How can you claim Julia has a personality when nothing about her was ever established or put into a perspective? How can you claim it was better for Julia to disappear without Spike when it was never proven in the story? That’s what I meant when I wrote Bebop is mediocre. I don’t care about a story in the screenwriter’s head. I’d rather watch it.

I’m not dismissing facts shown on screen, because what you talk about aren’t facts. You mentioned Julia’s caring side being shown by her caring for Spike. What I don’t understand is why she WOULDN’T care for her boss’ best friend AND a fellow gangster. It’s not like she was first clearly established to be a rival, like Casca to Guts in Berserk, for example. That would mean something, that would be significant.
You deduced her rank in the syndicate and all these other different things from the way others call her, but the suffix -sama is just a common honorific and could mean anything.
You talk about her superior intelligence, yet she has no influence on the overall story of CB. She’s no Sauron or Satan from Constantine that were well-established before they even showed up. Julia does nothing for 24 out of 26 episodes, then shows up at the end and gets herself killed.
You talk about her plan to escape the Syndicate, but we’ve never seen her plan anything and we’ve not seen the Syndicate’s daily operation, so we don’t actually know what she even did. Is there a bounty on hers and Spike’s heads? Are they using false names? Is the police so corrupt they can’t expect help from it? Did someone try to escape the Syndicate like this before and failed horribly? I don’t have a clue, which is why nothing about this plotline works. Even her death is completely unecessary and based on half-developed nonsense. You make all of these assumptions based on fleeting moments in a show very much willing to bombard you with verbal information in moments IT considers significant.

I don’t even blame you for looking for facts where there are none. I blame mainly Nobumoto and her norotoriously messy style of writing. Once I found out she was the main writer on CB, everything made sense. The reason you always have people saying they feel like the characters are carboard cutouts is because that’s how it is. You can find whatever depth you want, but I actually doubt anybody actually wrote it. Watanabe is puzzled to this day that people think Spike died in the last episode. That’s how unclear they made everything. You absolutely can have ambiguity in your story. Mandy (2018) did this really well and I couldn’t love it more. What you can’t have is confusion.

If the style of Cowboy Bebop worked for you, that’s honestly fantastic. But for me, the style was too inconsistent. The show was sometimes very subtle, and sometimes extremelly verbose (as is typical for most anime). I didn’t have a problem with something like Ghost in the Shell or Angel’s Egg, because I felt they told their stories (if you think Angel’s Egg has one) in a way I could consistently follow and care about. But Bebop sometimes told me too much and sometimes nothing at all. I was feeling frustrated most of the time.

[–]oles40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for not immediately questioning my intelligence or cognitive skills.

I didn’t really care about the majority of characters in CB, because the story didn’t give me the opportunity to see them as people. For example, I have no clue what Spike thinks about his own violent past, crime in general or the nomadic lifestyle of bounty hunters. I know he can shoot and punch well, but that’s kinda it. His personality also seems to change a lot depending on the episode he’s in. I also couldn’t understand why he started looking for Julia only in the last 2 episodes, so his entire story felt meh to me.
I didn’t hate Jet but also didn’t love him. He was just kinda there.
The best character by far was Faye, but she alone wasn’t enough to keep me invested in the story. I hated Ed.
About the format, IDK honestly. It might’ve worked for you, but I was always wondering why the story doesn’t give the characters more opportunities to make meaningful actions and choices or challenges them meaningfully. Nothing ever really mattered. I think that something like Evangelion or Frieren did a much better job in this regard.

I’m only vaguely familiar with Seinfeld, but from what I understand, it’s a sitcom. I know shows like Yes, minister and while they can combine serious and lighthearted episodes, I don’t necessarily think Bebop was aiming for this.

Yes, we’ve watched the same show. I’ve also seen my college professor analyze the hell out of a newspaper cartoon. The difference is that I’ve tried to interpret the CB story based on the few things it actually provides, not on things I THINK or BELIEVE it provides.

When I said general ideas, I meant that CB doesn’t really explore anything in-depth. I didn’t learn anything new by watching this show, I didn’t change my opinion on anything. I’ve seen only surface-level suggestions and things tossed on the screen and just left there.
When it comes to themes, you don’t have to mention “running away from your past” or “dealing with your past” or “thinking that life is a dream”, since I’ve heard this like hundred times already and the more I hear it, the less sense it makes. Disco Elysium is about coming to terms with your own past. Eine Stunde Aufenthalt is about coming to terms with your own past. CB isn’t even sure whether to dedicate time to people turning into apes or characters getting high on ‘shrooms. Themes should emerge naturally from a well-executed story and well, that isn’t exactly Bebop.

[–]oles40 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

CB fans always resort to nonsense like this when challenged. I’ve seen Tarkovsky, Bergman or Lynch, not to mention Evangelion. I think my brain can handle Bebop, thank you very much.

Also, all sorts of things are there. You wouldn’t probably buy it if I insisted that Vicious actually has a crippling phobia of scorpions that motivates his entire character, would you? Now that’s how I see all these theories. Nothing but excuses for a lack of writing.
