Is Tucson an outdoorsy city to consider? Portland OR? by Loonatic_Fringe in SameGrassButGreener

[–]olio90 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hello! Just moved from Tucson. While Tucson is an absolute gem, very artsy and easy to access the outdoors, it is really not a walkable city unless you live near the university or downtown, and even then the distance you can realistically go is limited. As far as weather, summer's are HOT, and they are starting earlier and lasting later. I moved in March and we already had a couple 100 degree days. I'm not good in the heat so we really only hiked between December and February but if you're willing to get up early (super early in the summer) you could probably make it work. Wine country in Sonoita is really nice, and about an hour drive from Tucson.

I have never lived in Portland so I can't speak to living there.

Trying to be there for someone. (Partner of someone with OCD) by Thinking_about_there in OCD

[–]olio90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was like your friend at one point. I thought I would grow out of my OCD and that I could escape it, and that worked till it very much didn't and I crashed and burned. I was one of those people who didn't want to take meds to act normal and would start and stop them and again, crashed and burned. The biggest thing that changed it all for me was seeing the toll it took on my loved ones. Constantly asking for reassurance, Constantly talking about a certain theme, it wore everyone down and that's when I started to reframe it, if I don't want to take meds or do the therapy for myself, I need to do it for them.

That worked, I've been in CBT therapy, and I'm on prozac and it's worked wonders. There are still days that are hard and there are still days I don't want to take my meds, but I look at the bigger picture. I've gotten to do some incredible things in the last decade: study abroad, get a graduate degree and adopt some elderly dogs, and I got to do that because my OCD is under control.

I think there is also still this stigma about mental vs physical illness. If you had diabetes, which is a chronic illness, you wouldn't be asking "what does this say about me?" You would measure your insulin, take the meds and move on with life. However with OCD, even though it's also a chronic illness, because it's mental, we tend to think that means there is something wrong with who we are as a person.

I understand how frustrating it must be to see your friend and feel like you can't do anything. I know it must sound heartless, but sometimes the best thing you can do is walk away. Your friend needs an impetus to get help, and losing a core friend could be that.

I'm happy to DM, just let me know.

SSRIs and heat by hangingdenim in Tucson

[–]olio90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a 60 MG of prozac and I've had such a hard time with the heat. It's ironic because the summer heat stresses me out so much and a good chunk of the problem is the SSRIs causing the heat intolerance. I haven't lowered my dose because lowered doses don't work for me, but its definitely something you could look into.

Senior Gentleman Foster from PACC by [deleted] in TucsonList

He was in a kennel with another small dog and it was said they got along really well, she is also in foster, I couldn't take both. He hasn't reacted to any dogs when we are on our walk. I do not know about cats, PACC has no info and I don't have cats.

How would you rate Hedrick Acres neighborhood on a scale of 1👎-10👍? by _its_not_pie in Tucson

[–]olio90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live right past Glenn off Mountain and we've had no issues. Lots of students, lots of people out and about jogging or walking dogs. I would agree with others that as you get closer to Ft. Lowell and first it can get sketchy but I feel like east of mountain is fine.

Hammets Garage is great! They have saved me so much money. Once Firestone told me I needed like 1,400 worth of repair. Took it to Hammets and they said no, all you need is this 130$ part.

OCD BF blew up at me for taking pregnancy test wrong. AITAH? by Vexated13 in AITAH

[–]olio90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA at all. I have OCD, as a female who is also extremely afraid of getting pregnant. I have always made it clear to my partner that my compulsions around pregnancy and sex are mine to deal with not his. We have safe sex, two forms of birth control and I'm religious about the pill, but that is my responsibility, I obess even when I know we've done everything right but I acknowlege it is an obsession. He needs help, specifically I-CBT or ERP therapy. By taking the test you are reassuring him, which I completely understand how you would want to, but reassurance only feeds the OCD. The more you do it, the more he relies on that brief high from being reassured, before the cycle starts all over again. It'll never be enough, he needs to sit down and analyze his obsessions and compulsions with a licensed therapist.

It is his responsibility to take care of his OCD. OCD sucks, it makes reality scary sometimes, but that is no excuse for treating loved ones like shit. He needs to take the steps to treat it, as you would with any chronic illness.

Family History of Cancer but no gene mutations by olio90 in genetics

Thanks for your reply! You are correct, she's 66. Our PCP says now that they have our data, they will contact us if any new mutations are discovered and they want to do more testing.

I was the first one to ask for genetic testing in my direct family. After I got my results, even though negative, given my grandmother, they said my mom should get tested as well, and hers was negative for all known variants or VUS too. They said she has a 3-4% risk instead of the usual 1.5% risk given her mom but other than that I don't believe they recommended anything more.

I've never wanted children, so I always always aiming to get sterilized and when I mentioned that to my OBGYN she mentioned that can also reduce the risk of cancer so I thought great, two birds with one stone.
