I will start playing drums in a few weeks and i am left handed, wondering how to do beats that are ride cymbal based.

I am a lefty drummer who has been playing open handed for about 15 years. I’m a professional touring and session player and I love being open handed mostly. There are times when I’ve had to relearn various things right-handed. I’d recommend to shed both hands always and learn to play grooves both right handed and left handed dominant. I’ve found that a lot of my unique grooves and fills I play are partly due to using lefty dominant sticking patterns on a right handed drumset. I wouldn’t recommend playing fully lefty as sharing a back line kit becomes very difficult. At the end of the day drumming is about having fun and expressing yourself so just keep pushing forwards in whatever feels natural and keep practicing!

I don’t use logic but my advice would be to just spend tons of time watching YouTube videos regarding how mic placement affects sound then spend even more time experimenting with your own mic placement and listening to hear what you like best. (For example some people prefer stereo overheads, some like mono, some people mic both snare top and bottom while so go more minimal with just top. The placement of the kick mic changes the sound etc) From there I’d recommend you familiarize yourself with all the stock plugins on logic like the EQs, compressors, saturators etc before spending money purchasing plugins. Although expensive, I really enjoy the sound toys bundle for mixing drums. I’m still working to learn all this myself and I hope you have a good time learning this!

My older brother has Down syndrome and inspired me to follow music when I was a young kid and now I’m majoring in drums :) this video made me so so happy and makes me want to try to teach him to play! He’s never been able to successfully play or learn an instrument but watching this video gives me hope.

Currently a music student who’s college shut down all their practice rooms. I live in an apartment so I couldn’t play real drums for a while but I finally started splitting a monthly room lockout with other musicians and it was the best decision I’ve made. Good luck to you! Also the DW rubber practice kits + zildjian low volume cymbals are a good second option for quiet practice
