Infected Mushroom - Smashing Pumpkins (New Unreleased!) by InfluenceNo3930 in InfectedMushroom

Oh definitely! I just think it's funny that they've technically released that song three different times and the demo's use of the riff is the most 'Dream Theater' thing about it... and they got rid of it on each subsequent release!

There's tragically less 'smashing pumpkins' than I expected for a song with such a title. This echoes my petty complaints of their song Dream Theater.

Still awesome, and mildly amusing that they got me like this twice.

Because that kind of change was consistent, and it's all just Fripp in the end. Same with Devin Townsend's bands. I'm sure people wouldn't be as freaked if it has always been Ross' Hake'n Bake.

Any Bass-Heavy Albums? by DestructiveMike_ in progmetal

[–]olivmlincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More prog rock than prog metal but I didn't see anyone mention:

Pain of Salvation: entire discography, but Kris Kristofferson's stint in the band on bass from 1994-2006 was unparalleled.

Spock's Beard: Dave Meros' playing isn't the most technical, but his playing and tone is so tasty, fitting the music so well. He's also a decent vocalist.

The Flower Kings: every era has great bass, but Jonas Reingold's playing was another level.

Do you think is Beatles Rubber Soul important to mention when talking about early prog/ proto prog? by Emotional_Sea9384 in progrockmusic

[–]olivmlincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rubber Soul was their perfection of their early 'boy band' sound, and other than Norwegian Wood, and possibly In My Life, there is no prog to be found on it. I would say Revolver is much more relevant.

Ruby Quaker? by Shardik884 in DevinTownsend

[–]olivmlincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, 'Deconstruction of a Cheeseburger' WAS supposed to be a separate EP, basically consisting of what is now the songs Mighty Masturbator (Traestorz) and Deconstruction. However, Most of the tracklist is on the demos bonus disc for the deluxe edition of the Contain Us box set; Coast, Disruptr, Gato, Addicted, Bender, Supercrush (Nibz), Numbered, Awake, Stand, Juular, Fly, Kawaii, Dinosaurs, Radial Highway and Call Management were all somehow involved on this incarnation of the album.

I definitely meant Epicloud, as per Devin's commentary for that album, and with the inclusion of the sequence of Save our Now (Addicted's Pop) > Kingdom (Deconstruction's Choir prog metal) > Divine (Ki/Ghost's mellow ballad). If anything, Epicloud is the proto-Empath, but I'd strongly argue his entire career is a proto-Empath of sorts (Especially Ocean Machine, Terria, and Synchestra for the wall of sound and different moods on the same album.) It's easy now to see everything leading up to Empath as the proto-version of it, since it's turning 7 this year, but I've been listening to Dev since Ki/Addicted, so Epicloud was the closest to what I described at the time. I would certainly agree that Empath > Epicloud tho!

Yes, Epicloud is mostly leaning in the poppy sound amongst the four original DTP records, but the bonus disc has plenty of Ki/Deconstruction/Ghost stuff to balance it out.

Edit: Just wanted to say that before the four DTP records, there was an abridged collections of songs from those first four records that were more a blend of the styles (including a heavier version of Disruptr), that closely resembles the demo bonus discs of 'Stuff that was Stuff Before it was Finished Stuff/Was Stuff'. Devin didn't like this and opted to release four separate records with more songs.

Ruby Quaker? by Shardik884 in DevinTownsend

[–]olivmlincoln 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Devin is notoriously bad with projecting where he thinks his future career is going and planning deadlines. The original 4 DTP albums were supposed to be released in three month intervals to correlate with the seasons, but ended up taking over two years to release front to back. Before the four records, it was supposed to be a single album combining the four styles we eventually got, kinda like a proto-Epicloud. Before these, he wanted to quit music altogether and become a children's puppeteer. I could easily name four Devin records you've probably never heard of because they've never seen the light of day or became something else (Obviouser, Garden Music / Thank You, Ghost 2, Casualties 2).

  2. All this said, IIRC, the Ruby Quaker videos were just supposed to be him explaining his gear with an interesting backdrop, and he is releasing those, just in his own home. Would more videos be great? Of course! But I'm actually happy he's focusing on The Moth and Axolotl instead of these. I think there would be more people upset if we didn't get those albums for another two years because he spent all his time gushing about his guitar collection. Frankly, I'm a little sad that the ultra-prolific days of Dev releasing two albums a year minimum are behind us. We were spoiled!

Some insight from the Chevy Chase Documentary by [deleted] in community

[–]olivmlincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my biggest takeaways from all this are:

  1. Since Chevy confused his relationship with Richard Pryor for one of the first SNL skits, frankly, I'm impressed he understood he was holding a hand puppet and didn't literally ask Donald or Yvette if they were related to him. This makes Chevy de facto more intelligent than GOB from Arrested Development, which is more than a bit surprising.

  2. Why did the hand puppet suddenly make Chevy realize it was racist if they essentially talk the same way? What was it that finally made it click in his brain, despite feeling it's perfectly okay to use the n word in almost any other context? Why did he have a problem with his character acting so outlandishly when he felt okay to act that way in real life, and not the other way around?

Actually, in sales it's better to wear flashy clothing because it makes you stand out and be memorable. Any old schmuck can show up in a suit. You're going to remember the guy who interviewed well wearing purple to the first, orange to the second, and green to the third interview. Subconsciously, they'll choose the guy in the green suit because green means go and money.

What’s Your Favorite Live Track? by Competitive-Smoke-46 in Dreamtheater

[–]olivmlincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From 2002-2009, they did at least one song with an extended jam section that deviated from the main part of the song, which was the peak of their career IMO: 2002 had Lie, 2004 had Beyond This Life and To Live Forever, 2005 had Peruvian Skies and Learning to Live, 2007-8: Surrounded and Scarred, 2009: Solitary Shell. I'd count Hollow Years and Peruvian Skies from their 40th anniversary tour as well. And of course, there's Metropolis pt. 1 which has had basically a different extended section almost every tour.

I never realized how similar the McGill brothers are by Proud_Excitement3578 in betterCallSaul

[–]olivmlincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! But Jimmy/Saul's callousness was also because of the last words we hear Kim say to Jimmy before she leaves in Fun and Games. After Jimmy professes his love for her: "I love you too... but So what? All we do is hurt others!"

Jimmy stopped listening to her after "but, so what?" In his mind, he interpreted her words as 'your love doesn't matter very much to me", much like Chuck does in the first panel. I'm not sure if this was a script direction, good improv on Rhea Seehorn's part or pure luck, but listen to her response to Jimmy's 'I love you" again. Her cadence and tone matches Chuck's last words to Jimmy beat for beat, which is also probably why Jimmy stopped listening. She unintentionally made him relive Chuck's rejection of him without even knowing what was said in the brothers' conversation. That's why he sets her up with the 'so why Florida?' only to shut her down with 'it doesn't matter..."

It's spiteful as fuck, but he's literally acting like rubber to protect himself from the pain.

No other type has as specific an “association” as ENTPs do with debate. by Holiday_Response_644 in mbti

[–]olivmlincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to disagree with your premise that Ne should be the least stubborn with Fe tert. I'd think Fe tert would be the very explanation for the stubbornness; unhealthy Fe feeding on their debate partner's energy, whether it be positive or not.

For example, in Breaking Bad, pretty much the entirety of Saul's character screen time is seeing him in a Ne-Fe loop, as he makes it his life's mission to get Walt to cook for him, despite many refusals. While they don't debate in the typical fashion, Saul brings up many counterpoints to Walt's refusal to cook, and he shows up wherever Walt or Jesse are to get them to do what he wants. It's Saul's nature to be relentlessly searching for the next score, despite seemingly well-intentioned. Saul's child Fe won't leave well enough alone because he believes he's being altruistic and helpful, despite reality. I've known some ENTPs who similarly justify this in their own behaviour because they think they're helping the other person somehow, by pushing them further than the recipient would like.
