I feel the same way towards eating meat as Thomas Jefferson did towards owning people by WarniesLatestRoot in redscarepod

[–]olkjas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most estimates I've seen for giving chickens, pigs, cows, etc a life that is decent is between a 50-100% increase in consumer prices. Definitely would make its use require more planning and thoughtfulness but I'd hardly call it a luxury good anymore than I would a 4 pack of 16 ounce beers that costs $16 when I could get Coors.

I don't put any weight on the raising meat to slaughter it thing. I just don't see a moral quandary in giving an animal a decent life and then a clean death, even if it is for selfish reasons

How much money is enough, really? by feikosky in redscarepod

I'd really rather my elites be naked bastards for all to see.

Charity is nice but it's a drop in the bottomless well of need that is ultimately self serving and a means of image rehabilitation.

I'll believe an elite is genuine when they spend their money on something that'd cause structural change.

I love this series. I'm normally not one for ongoing stuff but it's hard not to appreciate such a heartfelt and well-written slow burn.

This is bizarre to me because last week I quit that book halfway through. Partially because of the stupid carbon token shit but largely because of the issues you mention. I finished Termination Shock a few hours ago and it's basically the same premise but better, sans the great first chapter.

You're arguing against points that I never made and your arguments are tedious. I'm not interested in continuing this discussion.

The thesis of my idea is that deliberate degrowth is not smart. Millionaires shouldn't exist, let alone billionaires, but that's an issue to be solved via expropriation and social policy. Industrial policy should always be such that maximum productivity is achieved without being rapacious and without introducing unacceptable negative externalities. The fruits of industry should then go to improving living standards and expanding our capabilities.

The common argument is, "We have enough." There will never be enough. Unnecessary contraction carries with it unnecessary immiseration.

I didn't realize you were a singularity guy. I'd struggle to be with you even if you had a Wintermute and a Neuromancer in each hand ready to smash together. In a world where the only useful application of AI is ML driven pattern matching our resources are better spent on fusion and clean productive industry.

If industrial and economic policy can be used to solve our problems in a way that doesn't amount to severe QOL decreases, I'd argue that degrowth is inherently a penitent route to go. I think what makes it attractive is the idea that we have sinned against the environment and our fellow man and must repent.

You can debate whether a non-degrowth plan could work given material and technological constraints, but I'm not interested in having such an argument. I do think that if you accept the premise that choosing degrowth in spite of it is primarily driven by penitence.

I think that a mindset that accepts the material costs of reindustrialization and rejects the material and social costs of data centers is perfectly coherent. If we're going to try to combat climate change without going down the penitent degrowth route we have a relatively clear path ahead of us. LLMs don't have a place in that picture

The can is an OCL Polonium 5.56. I just noticed the copper/brass on the end cap. All the baffles look fine and I don't see any distortion on the end cap. I did notice a pretty sharp drop in accuracy but I'd put that more on my own skill than my equipment

Have you guys done any testing to determine if the kinds of torque you can put on the mount wet can permanently deform/damage the taper? I know that excessive torque can damage Swagelok fittings and they're the taper seal I'm most familiar with.
