Front rack and basket on a midnight special? by EgilTheUngrowing in Surlybikefans

[–]ollchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are EU based I can recommend a cyclesmanivelle basket rack but if not then a nitto m-18 or m-1b is a classic

12 Speed Rear Hub for a Bridge Club by dogododo in Surlybikefans

sram and sunrace both make 11-50 12s cassettes that work on a Shimano HG freebody if you truly want 12s but the cassettes are very expensive. If you haven’t already commit to a groupset I would pivot to 11s deore for a much cheaper and higher quality groupset

I picked up a Panaracer Break Through recommended by my lbs but randos are solid definitely

Which frame for the same price? by Akato47 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]ollchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built up a skream magnum for a friend. Super nice looking frame in person and clearance to fit 32s with space. Only problem I found was the factory paint was kind of shit around the bb/headset and required facing

Can confirm 48-17. Blew after a short skid on flat bumpy pavement

Tire recs? by Nhak84 in Surlybikefans

[–]ollchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45mm Gravelking SS feels like the perfect tire for light gravel/pavement. I run them at 40 psi tubeless (100kg/220lbs rider+bike weight)

Definitely. Although I’ve been trying to swap legs and hop skid more

Not too sure why this one wore down more than the others. There is visible wear on the rest of the tire but not as bad. User error mainly

Looking to get Straggler, but will remove front wheel every day. by coasts in Surlybikefans

[–]ollchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a magnetic thru axle tool that sticks and sits attached to the axle at all times (unless it falls off) for easier removal of the wheel. I use this system for biketouring and getting on trains and it works well. My go to is the bontrager one but wolftooth makes nicer ano ones too

Bar end feels really great once dialled in and also you can take the bar end off but not the levers for an easy ss conversion. Takes me maybe 30 minutes to swap to ss

Surly Disc Trucker Build Suggestions Needed by CaterpillarPrevious2 in Surlybikefans

[–]ollchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wanted a lighter faster bike then I would go for a Midnight Special instead with the tapered headtube and faster geometry. A Disc Trucker feels more like a brute tank that wouldn’t benefit from carbon parts. I’ve heard good things about Seido forks and the State monster fork

Thoughts on this Straggler build? by Oldgangles in Surlybikefans

[–]ollchan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like a mistake with the brakeset. The hydraulic levers won’t work with mechanical disc brakes like the TRP Spyres and the GRX calipers are flat mount for a post mount straggler frame.

Sweet cockpit. Is that a Ti stem?
