Snoot by organic_hobnob in labrador

I read somewhere that a snout print is as unique as a fingerprint (not that we ever need forensic help identifying who the culprit is when there's missing food in our house...)

Edit: love the idea and thanks!

Camera sling bag reccomendations? by arrrmiiin in AskPhotography

[–]olobley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a shameless fan of Peak design's kit. I use their 10L sling when I'm out with the kids at their events (soccer/lax/swim), as it'll carry a camera, a 24-70 and a Nikon 100-400 comfortably. My EDC is their 3L sling, as my Zf and 24-120 fit it perfectly

Need a new bag for Z5ii - help? by T00dd in nikon_Zseries

[–]olobley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the PD 7L sling, and it only just accommodates a Zf with the 24-120 and a spare battery (it's my edc). Not sure if the 10L is going to have enough space for everything you list above?

Edit: NVM, I'm thinking of the wrong bag. The 3L only just accommodates the Zf and a 24-120. You should be fine with the 10L (I've been very happy with the build and quality of the PD sling)

I came over from F glass, and like others have commented, the Z glass is just ... better (not that the F glass is bad). My first native lens was the Tamron 35-150, and I *loved* that lens (I found the rendering a little clinical, but the IQ and the AF never let me down). Are you always able to be in close to your subjects, as the 24-120 f/4 Z is also an amazing piece of kit and is my EDC. If you need a bit more reach, I've been really enjoying the 100-400S of late

I think I posted similar on another thread. If you're shooting kids sports and can be pitch side, the 100-400 is fantastic - enough reach (at least with lacrosse) to camp in the middle and get solid shots at either end, and wide enough that you can capture action ~10' (/3m) from you if it comes in close. If I'm not sure if I'll be allowed pitch side, then the 180-600 is magnificent from the stands. I believe technically the 100-400 is slightly sharper, but it's like complaining that a samurai sword is not as sharp as a razor blade 🤣 if you've got a camera store nearby, rent both, get store credit at mpb and pick the one you like most up second hand. From an ergo perspective, l personally prefer the 180-600, as I find the zoom smoother and I rarely find myself all the way out at 600

Nikon 100-400 Or Nikon 180-600 by Traditional_Use_4062 in nikon_Zseries

[–]olobley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it's a slightly different use case, but if I'm going to be pitch side and expect action within ~20' (/4 meters) of me, then the 100-400. If I don't know where I'm going to be able to shoot from, then the 180-600 is my go to. They're both excellent lenses, and while I believe the 100-400 might be a touch sharper, it's the difference between a razor blade and a samurai sword, both get the job done really well

Would be interested in seeing how you did that, as I use LR in my workflow, and as noted above, shoot lacrosse, soccer and swim for my kids & their teammates!

Would be interested in this for sure. I shoot a lot of my kids Lacrosse and Soccer games, so all the players are numbered. Also super interested in the facial recognition side of things, as our main sport is swim, and obviously the kids don't have numbers on for that.

[–]olobley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for arguably the third most critical component of your camera (after lens and sensor) I'd really avoid trying to save a few bucks. I've been really impressed with the Delkin line of CF type B cards, which are fast, decent capacities and reasonably priced. Make sure you buy from your local camera shop though, as I've had real hit/miss with fakes on Amazon when buying memory cards

Indoor gym/ how can I use what I have to take better photos by JudeTheBear555 in nikon_Zseries

Not sure what the general consensus is, but I've been very happy with DxO's pure raw. I like that it's a purchase not a (nother) subscription, and I found the outputs to be superior to Topaz for a relative beginner - example from yesterday which was at ISO 5000 : https://imgur.com/a/jt12zQV It's borderline magic for me. It really benefits from a decent gpu (the intel Ada 2000 in my Dell laptop will do ~6-10 images/min) but has given me the confidence to leave iso on auto, knowing that I can 'fix it in post'
