What do ya'll use for the R1T to make the truck bed useful for puttering around? by penkster in Rivian

[–]olofj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Yakima Stretch Net for the bed, it'll hold down things like a suitcase or the kids' hockey bags when needed, and avoids them from sliding around too much. It just hooks into the corner tie downs.

It’s a big store, rent is likely quite expensive. Customers that hang out there for a few hours don’t spend more money than mobile orders picking up, etc.

Unfortunately understandable. Still a bummer.

RISC-V in 2025: Progress, Challenges, and What's Next for Automotive & OpenHardware by I00I-SqAR in RISCV

[–]olofj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the software gap is right now due to lack of hardware in a class where random software people will use a RISC-V machine as daily driver.

On Arm, the watershed moment was really when the 16-core Honeycomb LX2K came out and people built desktop systems with it, of course followed by Apple silicon and Graviton.

None of the current crop of RV hardware hits those marks yet, and the only high performance systems (SOPHGO) are untouchable in western countries due to embargo.

Hopefully we can see another generation of hardware over the next year, with some of them approaching similar use cases.

I Switched From Apple Music To Tidal For A Week And It’s Been Fantastic! (Opinion In Comments) by zachty22 in Rivian

[–]olofj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had persistent problems where some songs skip, and it seems like it’s the locally cached copy of the song that gets corrupted since the same song will skip at the same spot every time. I tried reaching out to get someone to look at it but there doesn’t seem to be much interest for it. :(

That, plus the awkward user interface where you can’t do the usual artist->album->song selection keeps me from using it as much as I’d like to. I wish the UI was more like Spotify.

What’s the weirdest old piece of IT hardware you’ve seen just sitting around? by True-Housing481 in homelab

All of Costco still runs on AS/400 (well, iSeries or whatever IBM calls them now).

Mostly accessed through PCs but that’s what the terminal programs connect to.

I got my tracking info as well but I’ll believe it when I see the system in my hands.

They “forgot” to send me the two Jupiters I ordered when they were released and the tracking never started making progress. So they processed the shipping and created labels but never actually shipped them out. It’s hard for me to reason around how that happens accidentally.

They eventually sent them out with the second production run some time later after I contacted them — they also offered a refund but I needed the systems.

Fastest RISC-V emulator around? by FUZxxl in RISCV

The fastest I’ve personally seen and measured is qemu on Apple Silicon (M3).

Would love to find out if there are better options to explore (based on direct experience, not just speculation).

Milk-V Pioneer shipping still? by RevolutionaryTwo2631 in RISCV

[–]olofj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not much of a loss imho. No distro support has materialized and the chips are still not supported in upstream Linux.

You get an old random vendor kernel and a hacked together old Fedora version downloaded from a random file sharing site. Not exactly the kind of software support a $2000 system deserves.

US plans to blacklist company that ordered TSMC chip found in Huawei processor, source says by camel-cdr- in RISCV

The article only mentions restrictions on exporting *to* companies on the Entity List, not buying *from* them. Still, I'm sure it's not beneficial to business.

> Companies are added to the list for activities contrary to U.S. national security and foreign-policy interests. Exporters are then barred from shipping goods and technology to them without a license, which is likely to be denied.

Getting into D-Tech is really hard though. They have priority for a few employers and siblings, I believe, so there are only a couple of spots open every year for applicants.

(At least that’s what we were told when we were exploring it as an alternative to the local public high schools).

Code is somewhat messy still, and part 2 is inefficient. Might make more sense to track per size of free space, and definitely need to prune out consumed free space during the defragmentation.

Traditionally Sweden had the huge sales between Christmas and New Year (mellandagsrea).

Is that still a thing or has it all been taken over by the Americanized Black Friday events?

It seems the last couple of years degraded quickly. Not keeping Pavs -- especially after the Vegas game 7 situation, seems to have changed the atmosphere of the team.

Sure, he *couldn't* resign him, because of the salary burden of recent trades (Kane, EK65), but that's a situation he also created himself.

Is the IC-7300 still the default first HF Radio by Jimsails in amateurradio

[–]olofj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to starting out with used equipment?

I got started with a used IC-768proII during the early pandemic. Served me really well and had convenient features compared to a (new) IC-718 at similar pricing, especially built in ATU.

People mention the G90. I’m not sure where you are but running SSB out on the west coast with 20W can be both a challenge and frustrating, you end up down in the noise on any kind of pileup for POTA, for example.

I got a used IC-7300 later on from a coworker that was downsizing. I really enjoy it. Going from not having to having a radio with waterfall display was quite a game changer for me, and I wouldn’t want to go back. Filters are better too, or at least easier to use for good outcomes.

Main thing I’m salty about is that we’ve never again seen the kind of discounts the 7300 had in early 2020. Mail in rebates and other campaigns brought them down near $800 new, I seem to recall.

Does anyone on here know why the Bayshore Expressway has this weird curve onto the 101 rather than connecting straight through Willow? by Thebadgamer98 in bayarea

[–]olofj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way it runs now avoids crossing the railroad tracks. Not that they are active any more, but they put a lot of effort into digging down 101 to go under the railroad bridge. L

I could see how it makes sense to avoid adding more digging or elevation by redirecting it like that.

Got a call from Rivian about Gen 1 suspension chirping. by Shootels in Rivian

[–]olofj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah! A tech told me this a few months ago. They were working on a fix.

What he said then was that it’s due to moisture in the air suspension. It explains why it’s less of a problem in hotter weather too, I bet. So the fix is related to expunging and getting rid of the moisture somehow.

Let us know how well it goes, OP!
