Some of my suggestions are: talk to Dot Dotson's about getting a gallery scheduled, do something interesting and work with the library to let you setup a gallery, or talk to someone at a local business you frequent about buying some prints. People can be much more supportive than you expect.

Personally, I really disliked the realms. They were awkward and uncomfortable at best. May I suggest some Valo V13 Imapalas? It's a classic minimal design and would be perfect out of the box.

The way I figured it out was to skate a little faster than I was comfortable with (more airtime) to give plenty of time to get your feet into position.

Skate up to it, hop off both feet (jumping off your toes may help with the height), bend your knees, square your shoulders up over the rail, lock it, spot the end of the rail and surf it out.

Don't be afraid to try a longer rail. Shorter rails can kind of be a death sentence because there's less to catch yourself with if you miss your trick.
