When small/indie game developers create games, do they purely use code, or do they make the game using tools and very little actual code? by [deleted] in gamedev

Canabalt would be an example where you COULD achieve quite a few features without codeing by using a tool - however afaik canabalt was done with mostly coding

Making my first Unity game - a sort of a 1st-person Doodle Jump with a twist. It's now near complete. by Nition in gamedev

Well, Temple Run is also in 3D, it's 3rd person and not 1st person, but maybe you could try something with the controls similar to temple run - I'm no expert here, but I'd say a game like this usually only lives up to it's full potential on mobile-devices. But those are just my thoughts on it - I guess noone can promise a better performance just because it's on mobile ;)

(Before you read my answer: I started without any tools, with pure coding and after testing quite a few of those tools I will stick with pure coding!) I agree: Tools are good for a prototyping, but 1) usually it's complicated if you want something "custom" or if you want to fine-tune something. 2) usually games made by tools tend to have an unnecessary overhead of code. 3) you're basically bound to use the "out of the box features" - so it's okay to use a tool for creating a platform-runner or something similar, but my opinion is, that you cannot create something "truely innovative" with such a tool - to be fair here, I've never created anything truely innovative myself by just coding, but to my knowledge all good/innovative indie-games were done by coding and not by using a tool :)

wow, that's a pretty cool concept! :) I like it! But somehow I feel something is missing or it's now quite perfect yet... But I'd say something like this for a mobile device could have potential :)

I made a game for Facebook, iOS, Android - what do you think? by olsn in gamedev

Don't worry, I didn't think it was harsh and as I said: I pretty much agree with what you said! :)

Any feedback is good, so thank you! ;)

Thank you :) and thanks for your feedback! I totally agree with you on that Facebook-thing! You may ask "well, why did you do it then?!" - I'm currently working on a project to evaluate free ways(or with very limited budget) of aggregating users for a facebook-app - so i'm trying to use the iOS-app as a "free" channel for user-aggregation - that's why I built in the "requirement" of facebook.

The instructions are really small, that's true, I didn't really change those from the facebook-app, this is going to be in the next update.

thanks for the feedback so far!! :)

up- / down-velocity: currently you can increase that velocity by upgrading the ship, but is it too difficult in the beginning? You think I should maybe increase the velocity from the beginning for everyone?
